Lego TMNT Retiring; License Returns to Mega Bloks

In all the excitement of new stuff at Toy Fair, it’s easy to overlook what’s not there. Lego unveiled dozens of awesome new sets, but none of them in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme. Turns out that theme is over, finished. In a press release issued just before Toy Fair, Mega Bloks announced they’d acquired the license. In a way this answers some lingering questions about Mattel’s recent acquisition of MEGA Brands. Some worried that it meant the end of popular licensed properties like Halo, Call of Duty, and Assassin’s Creed in favor of Mattel properties. Such a move would functionally make the company Mattel’s equivalent of Hasbro’s Kre-O. The TMNT license is a sign that Mega Bloks will continue to offer properties outside the Mattel stable.

Mega Bloks previously held the TMNT license in 2003-2004 and produced sets based on the then-current Fox cartoon. The press release stresses the Nickelodeon series, now in its third season, but it’s unclear if Mega Bloks only has access to that part of the TMNT brand. Mega Bloks TMNT product is scheduled to hit shelves in 2016, so we might see some previews by the end of the year.
