Nike designer promises “Power Lace” sneakers in 2015
The hoverboards, food hydrators, and Mr. Fusion Home Energy Reactor may still be a few years away from reality, but a designer with Nike has announced his intention to fulfill at least one promise made in Back to the Future II.
Speaking at an AGENDA Emerge Trade Show in Long Beach, CA earlier this week, Nike designer Tinker Hatfield confirmed that the company is planning to launch the self-lacing sneakers made famous by Marty McFly in the 1989 film, largely set in the then-future world of 2015. Nike filed for a patent on “Power Lace” technology in 2010, and has teased the release of the MAG sneakers several times in recent years, even marketing a limited release of non-functioning replicas of the shoes seen in the film.
Of course, fans of the movie were left wondering whether we’d see the real deal in stores by 2015. At the trade show this week, Hatfield confirmed he expects the shoes to be available this year:
“Are we going to see power laces in 2015? To that, I say yes.”
Whether Nike’s MAG sneakers will be on shelves by October 21st or not remains to be seen. Now if we can just get those flying cars going, we’ll be set.
