Beast Wars Special Interviews

One of the neat things that Japanese books often have is an interview with the seiyuu (voice actors) for all the characters. In Kodansha’s Comic Bom-Bom Special #125, from an excellent series of anime guidebooks, there are surveys taken of all the voice actors from the animated segment of the BW Special movie. There are also similar ones with the actors from Beast Wars, since Bad Spark was shown as part of the feature, but I’ll hold off on translating those until I can look at interviews from the original Beast Wars cartoon. Each seiyuu answers four questions, and I’ve included their picture so that you can compare it to the character. Some of them look very different than expected, particularly Megastorm/Gigastorm’s voice actor, Takashi Matsuyama. His character’s such a punk, yet the voice actor looks very mild. I can’t help but feel that Starscream’s voice actor, fittingly, looks like a deviant.

Interview Questions:

3: What, if anything, has given you trouble?

4: Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie!
(Most take it upon themselves to promote it in-character)

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   His strength and kindness, sense of justice. Personally, I also like Lio Convoy’s beast mode.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   Since he’s something of a flawless character without weak points, it can be hard to bring out the human elements in him. Oh… he’s not human?

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   It’s an interesting and exciting project, and I’m giving it my best!

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   Usually he’s like a kind uncle, but when it counts, he fights for his allies with powerful weapons. He’s a good guy.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   Seems like it’ll be a good new years gift for the kids to enjoy…

1. Your character:  Bighorn.

2. What about your character do you find appealing?
* His wild style holds a pure heart inside.
* Though he’s all in love with Scylla, she didn’t give him the time of day.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   Not to be mistaken as a bad guy.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   When I write “seriously,” I mean it! Don’t stop with once, head to the theater two or three times!

1. Your character:  Scuba, Drillnuts .

2. What about your character do you find appealing?
Scuba: He’s silent and mystical. As for battle, he comes off as a businesslike elite.
Drillnuts: He’s really adorable and cute.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?
Scuba: Maybe casually delivering all those “squidden” jokes… (laughs).  [Note: Scuba is always making puns on the Japanese word for squid.  Even his main weapon, the Surumerang, is a combination of the words surume (dried squid), and boomerang.]
Drillnuts: He has some odd lines, and I’ve got to make them seem cool.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   I’ll show you a side of me you can’t see on TV, even more smooth than usual.

1. Your character:  Galvatron

2. What about your character do you find appealing?
* His overpowering strength of will
* His menacing three-way transformation

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?
* In the post-recording phase, since you can’t tell by looking, it’s hard to put together the subtleties in his emotion.
* Since one of Galvatron’s characteristics is that he clenches his teeth while speaking, the clarity of the words can be lost.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   “Galvatron’s Moment of Truth!”  [He’s joking around, since the film is called “Lio Convoy’s Moment of Truth.”]

1. Your character:  Gigastorm (Megastorm)

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   He’s strong, but also childish. He’s a very two-faced character (that much is obvious).

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   Nothing like that now, but initially I had trouble building up the character.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   An all-time great film with the teamwork perfected over the TV series!

1. Your character:  Hellscream (Starscream)

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   His intelligence, just like when he was Starscream…? And on top of that, as Hell, he gains more variations on his magnificent attacks. It must be that unique “queer” way of speaking.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   It’s tough no matter what I say. Well, in conversation with his partner Max-B, since the guy can only say “Roger,” it can be pretty hard to follow.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   Gaze upon my splendor on the big screen! Ah-hahaha.

1. Your character:  Max-B (BB), Bigmos

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   Max-B doesn’t really talk. That sense of the “silent man,” I think it’s really cool. I like that Bigmos is very “yakuza-esque.”

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   It’s hard to keep up with “Maruse.” (Note: looks like Maruse is somebody’s nickname, not sure which one of them.)

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   Roger!

missing imageFile 12: Eiji Takemoto
1. Your character:  Dirgegun (Dirge)

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   Bit by bit, the character is becoming more cynical, and I can see it overlapping with myself.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   While still projecting a powerful image, it can be particularly hard to portray the flaky nature of the character.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   I won’t let Hellscream best me!

missing imageFile 13: Junji Sanechika
1. Your character:  Thrustor (Thrust)

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   If I have to pick one, while he’s kind of a klutzy character, it’s appealing that he gives a bit of effort every time. Even though he doesn’t get much airtime, he’s got some spice, which I admire.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   Within his short lines, imbuing him with a unique feel. Making all those lame jokes.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   It’s grown into a real masterpiece. Definitely.

missing imageFile 14: Ryou Naitou
1. Your character:  DJ

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   Well, since I think his cheerful noisiness is appealing, I’ve been having fun with all his Latin-style nonsense.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   His weirdness demands a lot of energy. It really wears me out…

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   I’m giving it my best! So, make sure to check it out!

1. Your character:  Halfshell, God Neptune

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   It’s rare these days to see a character that cares about his henchmen, and will do things he doesn’t like if it’s for them, even become a henchman himself for a guy he doesn’t like. I find that kind of hot-blooded character to be really exciting, and that sort of atmosphere really pleases me.   With 5 members, we form the largest robot in among all beasts, yet it’s important that the various strengths of the individual members also emerge, as everyone wants to bring out their own character.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?  When God Neptune uses his Final Attack, there’s a lot of energy put into it, so the volume is blaring and the sound effects can get to be a pain. I’ve got to put a lot of strain on my vocal chords, and soon after that my lines start to dry up, so it can be a tad challenging.  There are quite a few adlib scenes for God Neptune, so what we do in practice and for the final version keeps getting changed around all the time .

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   Though we battle right off the bat at the start of the film, if the strength and feeling of us Seacons is conveyed, I’m thrilled. (We can be a little goofy, too…)

missing imageFile 16: Yumiko Kobayashi
1. Your character:  Lio Junior

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   He can be pretty cheeky, but he’s got Lio Convoy in mind.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   Lio Junior’s still in the process of growth.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   I’m doing my best to grow alongside Lio Junior!

missing imageFile 17: Mantarou Iwao
1. Your character:  Skywarp

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   A unique bird character. Wisdom, courage, and love for the young.

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   Love for the young.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   Wisdom, compassion, and love for the audience!

missing imageFile 18: Haruhi Terada
1. Your character:  The computer voice (On TV, called Navi-chan)

2. What about your character do you find appealing?   Despite being a computer, she’s very human-like and cute. Recently, she got to go along with Skywarp and got remodeled!

3. What, if anything, has given you trouble?   While using human words, I have to give off a slightly robotic feel.

4. Please say a few words of enthusiasm for the Beast Wars movie.   Please have a taste of our presence on the big screen! And won’t you watch us on TV too?
