Previously Unseen Concept Art from Transformers: The Movie
Allspark member D.M has stopped by to let us know about some new pieces of previously unseen concept art from Transformers: The Movie from artist Floro Dery. One of the pieces features an early (and very different) character design for Ultra Magnus!
Transformers fans know Floro Dery as the designer who created many of the Transformers animation models for the Generation One cartoon series, simplifying the character designs based on the pre-existing toys. Dery has recently taken to selling prints of some of his early Transformers concept art through his Etsy shop, and many of these cases are giving Transformers fans glimpses of some rarely-seen concept art.
As you can see from Dery’s concept art, Ultra Magnus started out as a very different Autobot. The early design features arm cannons, metal wings, “fusion rocket booster” boots, and a head very reminiscent of Decepticon leader Galvatron. Of note is that Magnus’ chest design closely resembles that of Orion Pax, the Dery-designed robot who would become Autobot leader Optimus Prime (as seen in the epsiode “War Dawn”). Though the art is undated, it clearly predates the decision to use Takara’s Powered Convoy mold for Ultra Magnus, and some Allspark members have theorized Dery’s unused design was modified to be used for Orion Pax. Notes on the art indicate this was Dery’s third design for Ultra Magnus.
The other sketches include a savage design of the Quintesson court (complete with Sharkticons) which closely mirrors what was seen in the movie, and an alternate version of the Autobot shuttles with a very different imagining of the planet Thrull in the background.
Though the prints of the sketches have now sold out on Dery’s Etsy page, thanks to D.M we have the images for you here at the Allspark. Join the discussion in D.M’s thread HERE.
