Lorenzo di Bonaventura: G.I. Joe v Transformers film “a possibility”

Hasbro’s Transformers and G.I. Joe franchises have a long history of bumping into each other. The G1 cartoon often hinted that the two shows shared a universe, and 1987 saw the publication of the first “G.I Joe and the Transformers” crossover series from Marvel. Since then we’ve seen several meetups in the comics and a handful of crossover toys from Hasbro. Could fans hope to seen see Optimus and Snake Eyes together on the big screen?

Speaking to Total Film, Transformers: Age of Extinction producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura was asked about an on-screen clash between the two properties. Both series are based on Hasbro action figures, and both are being produced by Paramount Pictures, after all.

While no plans for a “GI Joe vs the Transformers” movie exist yet, it’s nice to hear that the door is at least partially open to a crossover film. There are, of course, bound to be a few bumps in the road; the two film franchises exist in very clearly separate universes, though a capable scribe could bridge the gaps and fans would likely be willing to forgive a few inconsistencies to see it happen. Ten years ago the idea of a live-action Transformers film was still something of a pipe dream, and today the series is one of the top-grossing film franchises in history, so never give up hope!
