Look Up! Celebrating Hope and Optimism across Fandoms

Here at the Allspark, we take pride in being part of a community built around common interests, and one of the best things about any community is the fertile soil that community provides for ideas to take root and grow. Browsing the discussions here recently, you’ll see a lot of user posts with various image signatures featuring the phrase “Look Up!” So what’s that all about?

A recent discussion about DC Comics ‘New 52’ rebranding spun off organically with the notion that today’s fiction – be it comics, TV, movies, or others – is full of so-called heroes who are barely distinguishable from the villains they grapple with. Heroes who reach for a gun first. Heroes who help people only if, by doing so, they help themselves. Heroes who brag to each other about their exploits like two kids in a schoolyard.

Are “truth, justice, and the American way” outdated, hokey ideals? We don’t think so.

Look Up! is a celebration of the characters in fiction who do the right thing because it is the right thing to do. The characters who would sooner solve their problems with their words rather than their fists. The characters who build the future rather than cling to the past. The characters who serve as something to strive towards, rather than cautionary tales. Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Captain America. Professor X. The Doctor. Twilight Sparkle. G1 Optimus Prime.
