Peter Cullen on Voicing Optimus in “Transformers: Age of Extinction”

Some of us have met him, and many have listened to his voice over the past 30 years. Of course, this is Peter Cullen we’re talking about. The voice – or the soul/spark, to some – behind Optimus Prime, talks with the Los Angeles Times Hero Complex just a bit on his role as the ever iconic Autobot leader in regards to the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction. He already touches on how his late older brother Larry was the inspiration for Optimus’ voice and mannerism for the 1984 cartoon series, but also notes that “It’s kind of surreal to audition for a character that you basically created” when auditioning for the first live-action film back in 2007. Regarding Age of Extinction, he was given only Optimus’s lines and didn’t see the entire script. As for his reasons:

“I don’t really have to. Because Prime is Prime. He’s going to react to whatever he’s reacting to without knowing what’s going on in the future.”

Transformers: Age of Extinction rolls out on June 27, 2014.
