“Transformers: Age of Extinction” not for kids? Not so fast, says Titus Welliver
Like the titular characters of the franchise, Titus Welliver’s comments have somewhat transformed in connection to a quote he made a few weeks ago regarding the “darker vision” of Transformers: Age of Extinction. In an interview with the Nerdist last month, Welliver, who plays a character named Savoy in Age of Extincion, was quoted as saying:
“I’ve now won the hard earned respect of my children because I’m in a Transformers film, and I’ve always wanted to work with Michael Bay and certainly Mark Wahlberg and Kelsey Grammer.” And what can fans look forward to in this installment? “It’s a bit more of a darker vision of the Transformers world… It’s not a kids movie, I’ll tell you that much.”
This quote has gotten some mileage around the internet but the update posted in the same article in which Welliver appears to somewhat backtrack contextualizes his statement with the following:
“I misspoke in my last interview when I said that Transformers 4 was not a kids movie…what I meant was that this film, will in fact expand their target audience and bring in a bigger fan base. Following the huge success of Transformers and their toy line, it is certainly a kids movie and with the addition of Mark Wahlberg, Transformers 4 will be the coolest in the franchise.”
So to fans who persist in the “Grim dark” fantasy of Transformers story telling, you’ll have to wait a while longer until your dreams come true. There’s no confirmation as to why the clarification was made, but it can be assumed that Hasbro must have stepped in before the perception got out of hand considering that driving force behind the films is a children’s toyline.
Titus Welliver is known for his roles on Lost and has had recent appearances in Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. Transformers: Age of Extinction releases June 27th, 2014 and you can keep up with all the latest news and discussion in our Transformers 4 movie forum.
