We've got several staffers out in the sunny and smoggy subcontinent known as California, and we'll be getting news updates round the clock! Remember: this is going to be some of the latest news we've gotten in terms of Botcons, since this is the first time in several years the convention's been held in the Pacific timezone. So you Easterners are going to have to stay up past your bedtimes!

Our own ChessPieceFace is checking in from the con with a few bits of info.

As noted in the TFD thread, Animated is officially ending. Spoiler about the last episode: HIGHLIGHT to view:
They wanted to show the Dinobots, Wreck-gar, and the Constructicons alive at the end of the show, but they ran out of time.

Movie Writer's Panel starting, with Kurtzman and Orci.

I'll pretty much just copy and paste what ChessPieceFace feeds me, and serially edit the same post as long as it's on the same subject.

they wrote a 20pg outline 2 weeks before strike, then afterwards bay locked them in a hotel room 5 blocks from his office to finish, popping in constantly. massive room service bills. 4 months later, script done, shooting.

more robot screen time, more mythology, just as funny and crazy

blah blah blah need a good villian blah rise of a hero blah wanted to do tf justice blah blah.

For 3rd movie, Megatron vs. Enterprise. (kidding, of course)

Lots of questions about how awesome Shia is. "Shia's nice. He hurt his hand. He ran a lot."

Originally they wanted Soundwave, Ravage, and Arcee in TF1. (So basically, it sounds like a lot of people asking questions at this year's con didn't read the interviews from the 2007 con.)

For TF2, Michael created some characters, Hasbro suggested others, and some were put in for story or gags they thought of.

has hasbro ever dictated stuff a char needs to do, so they can sell a toy? no. hasbro's awesome. they showed them the history, said "pick what you want." they'd show them some ideas, but they'd only use what they thought was cool.

how do you deal with criticism of the first movie? tried to take it into account for sequel, now they're coming off success, tech's better, more freedom - you can't please everybody

is the char named demolishor or scavenger? can't answer, but there's a reason why there's 2 different names

Will Primus or Unicron be in TF3? Dunno, maybe.

Will we see what happened to Dispensor or the XBox360? You might figure it out, but you won't see them married with kids.

Is Michael Bay crazy? Half - he uses it to get what he wants, partially an act.

Tell us about Ehren Kruger? Was a big TF fan, impressive, cool. Good to have a new perspective.

Would you write a Beast Wars movie? Maybe.

Is Nimoy talking to Bay? Don't know.

Will we see the matrix or the quintessons in the movie? "Great question." Applause.

Why is Sideswipe not a Lambo? Where's Sunstreaker? Bay has all the say about cars. He loves cars. Script had him as a Lambo.

Who designed the faces of the twins? A Bay designer along with Hasbro designers. Since they were new and funny, they gave them weird physical appearances. It was driven by the studio. Bay just thinks those guys are so funny!

how much offscreen backstory did you think about? we thought about science, parallel evolution, we tried not to drown the movie in technobabble, but we love that stuff.

do we get backstory on how stuff combines, what happens to minds, etc? nah. michael wanted it to just happen.

how do you manage all the chars and storylines? we try to figure out the big stuff, unanswered questions from TF1, and find the story. we do actually read the comics, sometimes one panel can be a great inspiration.

"There's less criticism from boards for TF2", "Bay's a target" (tossed out bits in response to blurted out questions)

did the studio reluctance to have them talk make Bumblebee talk thru radio? no that can from ET, and they wanted the first robot to speak to be prime. Their sense is that people like the radio speak.

Was Bumblebee's face purposefully more human? Yup.

Blackout vs. Grindor? Spoiler material, can't answer.

More Soundwave tapes? Something new in that category, not one you know.

(Question about reanimating TFs). That's a big part of what the 'cons have to figure out.

Why Jetfire's cane? He's old.

And that's it, session's over.

I'm more disappointed in all the silly questions of people just looking for revelations and stuff which, even if they did know, the writers wouldn't be able to talk about.

I wish more people bothered to ask about their process. I got this impression in 2007 too...kind of a wasted opportunity having these guys there if people don't want to ask about the actual writing.

That's all that was said about Animated?
That it's ending?

Well, there are two more panels Saturday that might have more to say.

Apparently, the Animated panel had one or two new shorts no one had seen before.

I hope to god they put the remaining ones on the last DVD. It's not like there's many other options for them.

It's weird/bad that that's all that you post about it.

Is there any news yet? Someone told me that Black Deluxe Scorponok is being named Stalker now.

Didn't like their rip of of Clonus Horror that they called The Island. Didn't really care for Star Trek or Transformers 2007's script either.

So to clarify, respect and enjoyment of work are coterminous to you?

(I am pleased that you know of Parts, though. Nicely done. )

I'm sure that they are nice people, but I find their work to be highly over-rated. They lost my respect when they "wrote" The Island.

Who rates them highly? Star Trek, from what I hear, was largely due to Damon Lindelof's influence. Aside from that, I think most people consider them pretty hack-y.

There are photos of Freeway Jazz and Electrostatic Soundwave (sans Ratbat) @ Tformers. According to the signs, they are available now. Good to see Hasbro is nice and organized, as usual.
