Everypony ready for an Applejack episode?

QUOTE
The Last Roundup: Applejack goes missing after attending a rodeo, so her pals search for her.

Looking at TVGuide.com, it appears that there won't be an encore showing immediately afterwards anymore. The time slot following all new episodes for now on will be reruns of S2 episodes. No more of the same episode back to back. So try not to miss the first showing, or you'll have to catch YouTube later instead.

With a speaking role!

In my opinion a great episode. AJ I thought was acting a bit out of character and maybe not living up to her elemeny of honesty, but she technically didn't lie. She just... didn't tell the whole truth.

Pinkie was fun, as usual. It was funny to see them use her as a "weapon" to try and get AJ to spill the beans. Angry Pinkie was funny too.

The final scene with Pinkie and Rarity was just awesome. Nice to see that the writers didn't just have them magically be on the train with the others. Poor Rarity... icon-fire.gif

And finally, Derpy is now officially canon and has a voice! Anyone know who was voicing her?

Yeah, me too. Lucy references excite me more than CANON DERPY. I mean, I'm glad the show has this ongoing back and forth with the fandom--god knows it wouldn't be as popular as it is without it--but I prefer that to be more in the background (like correctly pairing Lyra and Bon Bon, like they were this episode.)

Also, I love how this show isn't afraid to bend its own rules for the sake of a gag. Like, there's no way they wouldn't go back for Rarity and Pinkie, you know? But somebody said "ponies on a handcar! PONIES ON A HOOFCAR!" and so it went in.

As always, I'm in agreement with Master Fwiffo.

I'm also not too fond of excessive slapstick (My fondness of Lesson Zero isn't exactly universal, either), which her scene kinda was. And it felt very, very forced.

I'll withhold judgement of the rest of the episode since the above may have coloured by impression of the rest beyond its actual relevance for the episode at large, though.
Guardian Prime
Well.....I....I don't know what to say. I've got mixed feelings about this. I'm not really sure what to think of it.
I'm still in shock that they actually made Derpy's name canon on the show. That was very unexpected. She had been absent in the past couple of episodes, but today she came back in a BIG way. And they even gave her a speaking role!

After watching the episode on the Hub this morning, I hit EQD to see what the fandom's response was to this. The number of responses there are overwhelming, but they seem positive overall. A whole lot of excitement going on there as a result of Derpy's canonization today.

I always thought that she was meant to be the "where's Waldo" of FiM and never expand past that. At least, that was the impression I always got. Hasbro really dropped a surprise on all of us today. One that I never expected would actually happen.

Poor Applejack. Looks like her episode today is going to be remembered as Derpy's episode instead.

Yeah, forced is a good word for it. I'm not at all opposed to doing some fan-pleasing things, but they went way over the top. I've never been fond of 'derpy' as a name anyway (as it seems meanspirited) and actually naming her that just smacked of wrong. And while I would have been fine with the scene in concept, they made it, well, particularly over-the-top. Her extreme stupidity and the voice they chose, well, it was like the less pleasant bits of a bygone cartoon era, and it felt really out of place.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but Derpy did a lot of harm to an otherwise solid and fun episode.

It's a textbook case of pleasing the fans at the expense of the show.

This might be a YMMV thing, as her voice meandered into a more acceptable tone as the scene went on for me. "Way to go Rainbow Dash" was a bit thick, but the later ones go into less 'stupid' territory and more 'klutzy' for me.
DrSpengler
Oh god Derpy!

Her scene did go on a bit long and she felt about as "forced" as, say, Pip, but I didn't mind her. I was still happy to see her get some lines.

Though she wasn't my favorite part of the episode. My favorite part was:

"RARITYCATCHME!"

"What? Pinki-OOF!"

Poor Applejack. Looks like her episode today is going to be remembered as Derpy's episode instead.

And Pinkie. She managed to steal some of the show, herself, with a bunch of little moments. I particularly liked her weaponized form, RAGE mode, the bit where she popped out to give that rejected birthday delivery pony a slice of cake (that's so her), and the "RARITYCATCHME!" part.

As far as Derpy goes, I don't mind at all that they made the name canon. But I do think, if she ever speaks again, that the voice should be tweaked a bit to be less stereotypically "dumb" sounding. Making her kind of adorably clutzy is fine, but the voice shouldn't make her out to be mentally challenged or something.

I also wonder if the later cameo of Dinky and Carrot Top riding together on the train leaving Ponyville was an intentional nod at some of Derpy's fanon, as well.
Creature SH
I think I can imagine how Derpy ended up being more prominent in this episode... They needed a reason why town hall had the stereotypical broken roof. I would bet money that someone in the studios just joked that Derpy broke it, and that they then went "You knoooooow.... Why not, actually?".

In any case, I feel that this is definitely one of the stronger episodes. I used a lot of the things that I enjoy about this show: Interplay of the cast's characterization, snappy slapstick, plays on the concept of a pony-run world, lovingly-detailed animation with great comedic timing and, of course, Pinkie Pie being Pinky Pie. It might not have been perfect in every way, but I had a lot of fun watching.
TM2 Dinobot
This was a good solid episode that was very enjoyable. Derpy on the cloud was my favorite part, but 'Derpy'? Really? Now, if we can just nail her to Dinky we're good.

Pinkie stole the show. 2 weeks in a row that I love her. The lines she had cracked me up. Rarity too. I'm glad the two of them got to spend some "quality" time together. icon-waspy.gif Fluttershy was not remiss with her great scenes either.

I'm guessing this is a later episode, towards summer. No big deal that AJ is going to Canterlot. Everyone seems very settled. Pinkie promise shows up. Just a guess.

I wasn't going to bring that up, but yea. That's where I kinda had mixed feelings is that right there. I don't think all of her lines sounded like that, but a couple of them sorta gave that impression. For now, I'm just going to think that the electrical shock from the cloud she was bouncing on scrambled her head for a few moments. I enjoyed everything else about her for being klutzy and accident prone. She certainly can cause a lot of damage. icon-fire.gif

The rest of the episode was enjoyable, too. The stage coach chase was hilarious. Also....Applejack running the hamster ponywheel ends up with buttburn....OUCH!! She must have some seriously thick hide.
Murry
Derpy sounded to me like she might be deaf. At least a few of the 'dumb' lines came out somewhat as you would expect someone with a hearing disability to sound. hmm.. deaf.. ear trouble.. inner ear problems can affect ones coordination.. Eh. She may never have a speaking role again for all we know but Im for one glad for them to put her in there. I'm not really sure why people are surprised they named her Derpy tho. That's been her factually canon name for a while now. It would have been a bigger surprise for her not to be called that.

Nods to "RD is gay"?

Nope. Enough of the North American viewing audience won't be open-minded enough for this for another decade or two; and such a thing could seriously hurt the show if the legion of suburbanite censorhappy freaks got their filthy paws on it. Hasbro would never allow it, and Studio B would know better than to try to slip it through under the radar.

I can only recall one cartoon series that ever managed to slip a (probably) homosexual character in under the radar, and I totally missed it myself when I watched the show (Reboot) as a kid. But in the 2-part finale of Season 2, when Bob and the Mulder & Scully parodies visit Al's Diner, the replacement waiter totally checks Bob out, lol. I got a bit of a kick out of that while watching recently on DVD; the first time I'd seen the episode in well over a decade.
Murry
They've already done nods to RD being gay. But alrighty.
TM2-Megatron
They haven't, really. There are some scenes that can be amusing if freeze-framed at the right spot (like all the bedroom eyes in each and every episode), but I don't think there's been anything intentional. Just the usual shippers gonna ship. Even in this very episode, they're using freeze frames from the scene where Rainbow is threatening AJ with Pinkie, 'cuz of course she's all wrapped around Pinkie, lol.

I'm in agreement with this, and I think those are the type of fans that are best left ignored.

They caught me by surprise with not airing the encore. I cam home early expecting it, but nope. Good thing there was a Power Rangers Dino Thunder marathon on nicktoons at that moment.

These things are getting harder and harder to find on youtube too. It's still trolls being trolls and not Hasbro's actual hand right?
Murry
Oh right and guns are cannon now according to RD. unless someone has another fancy history lesson on the word gun to try and retcon them out again like they did with tank bullet and canon
TM2-Megatron
Basing a pony design on a movie character (however scummy) isn't quite the same thing, if only because none of the people who might object are even going to recognize it when they see it. Few (if any) have probably even seen the movie in question; for them to get it you'd first have to sit them down and explain it all. Said pony was on screen for 2 or 3 seconds, tops; a lot of fans even missed him the first time around, only noticing when going back through the scene after the Steve Buscemi, John Goodman and Jeff Bridges ponies were shown.

A reference to Rainbow being gay, though? Or bisexual, at least. For them to get that across it would need to be pretty blatant. Weird interest groups would crawl out of their volcano lairs, pick that up and run with it in a heartbeat; calling for boycotts of Hasbro, cancellation of the show, and all manner of other ridiculous things. It doesn't make a lick of sense, but there it is. Eventually, we'll see a day when a children's show can have a gay character, but that day isn't today. Anyway, something like sexual orientation (any of them) should only be included for a character at all if it can be done in such a way that contributes to a story.

If anything (though it's hardly concrete), the show has made her out to be straight (or, again, at least bi) at the end of Sonic Rainboom. Personally, I don't care. She could be a robosexual (still not quite sure what this is, but I still find it amusing all these years after Futurama) for all I care; but none of it has anything to do with the show.

Man how amazing was that episode! Pretty much a perfect 10/10 all round I think!

To those moaning about Derpy, lighten up! I thought it was a wonderful nod, and it's not like it affected the episode at all. She could have been a different pony called Bob and nothing would have changed. It's just an easter egg for the fans rather than the show being taken over and pulled in a new direction, don't stress!

Agree that the voice was a bit too 'dumb' but eh, characters who aren't the mane six tend to have lots of voices in this show.

Exactly. She could just as easily have been Hayseed Turniptruck for all intents and purposes. But they decided to throw in something for the online fanbase and that's just awesome.

Though I DO hope they keep her on as an easter egg. Looking for her in episodes has been fun (kinda like the waving snail in Adventure Time).

Just like always - you went further on your own and dragged away the convo into a totally different direction. It wasn't about RD and his sexual orientation, it was about fanservice.

There's some fanservice they can get away with, and others they can't. They wouldn't be able to get away with what you're suggesting. Simple enough? You've also accused the creators in the past of intentionally including "plot shots", aka gratuitous ass shots, so I think you may be reading a bit too much into some of these occurrences.

Rest assured, there'll be no "Rainbow Dash is a lesbian" fanservice unless you invent it for yourself. That one just won't happen. Not unless the show survives, or is revived, sometime in the 2020s.

Omg, Depry speaks! XD I do love it but was expecting a more high pitched voice like the fan dubs on YouTube.

I love it how AJ said "Time to get the heck out of dodge!", I lol'd. I wonder if anyone outside of the country not familiar with old west stories would get that reference.

There's something strange I noticed on a repeat viewing that I don't believe anyones commented on yet.

In the crowd scene at the beginning of the episode while Applejack is giving her speech, the camera briefly focuses on Dinky, who is standing between Golden Harvest and some gray adult male Unicorn with purple hair I don't think we've seen before. Dinky looks up at the Unicorn while two adult ponies look at her and smile.

Slightly later on in the scene where everyone is sending Applejack off at the train station, we see the same Unicorn talking to Golden Harvest in the foreground. Other than Bon-Bon who consistently standing next to Big Mac in almost every shot for some reason, they are the only background ponies present in this scene. Then as the train leaves the station, the camera pans over Golden Harvest and Dinky riding in the car in front of Applejack.

I was wierd to see this kind of consistent background narrative going on.

Edit: Seriously, Bon-Bon was there with the main group, the apple family and the Mayor in every shot. She even chases after the train with everyone else as it leaves. What was she doing there? If she's actually there to support Applejack, she's come a long way from her rude "And you are?" comment to Rarity in season one.

Edit2: And she's the only background pony other than the extended Apple family at Applejack's welcome home party!
TM2-Megatron
I mentioned the Carrot Top & Dinky on the train scene earlier, but related to the fact both are connected to Derpy in fanon. No idea about the Unicorn; but apparently some fans are going with him being Dinky's father.

EDIT: Also, Carrot and Dinky were seen together during Nightmare Night. She was the one consoling Dinky when all the kids got upset about Luna "cancelling" the holiday.

Oh right and guns are cannon now according to RD. unless someone has another fancy history lesson on the word gun to try and retcon them out again like they did with tank bullet and canon

The show is written in English. The language has some idiomatic expressions that refer to firearms, but which don't actually have anything to do with guns. I really don't find these particular kinds of phrasing choices terribly fertile ground for overanalysis, because they have more to do with the English-speaking audience than the world of the show itself.

Have to question Applejack's representation of Honesty too. She wasn't being truthful, even wording technicalities. On her secret, haha, if it wasn't a kids' show, I'd have said she was hiding her pregnancy, lol. Ok, that wouldn't have been a laughing matter. Before her telegram, I thought maybe she's have met a stallion while competing that she liked. For an AJ episode though, she wasn't really in it. Lol on the stagecoach chase and when she thought she lost them.

What's the I Love Lucy reference? Not my generation.

Lmao on Pinkie! From the late surprise, the bathroom break, the use of her as a threat, to her unholy terrorness of the pinkie promise, wow, she was crazy hilarious! Cool for her giving that guy a piece of cake too. Er did she really say 'rarity catch me?' I didn't catch what she said.

I saw pics of Pinkie as Deadpool but is that chimichanga cherry stuff really a fan reference? I collected Deadpool up to Joe Kelly's run but I don't really recall the chimichanga stuff. Was it during Fabian's Cable and Deadpool issues? I don't even recall when the Bea Arthur stuff happened.

Needs more Big Mac.

I can't complain about Derpy since I don't know enough of her fandom background.

Very fun episode. Until the end, I was under the impression that AJ was paying off a bet that she made with Cherry Jubilee. Having given the pep talk from the entire town about how she'll win the blue ribbons at the rodeo, she might have bitten off more than she could chew. Not so much about the blue ribbons, but her pride in coming home without the money was the driving force in her judgement. Her partial lack of honesty was incidental to what AJ thought was doing the right thing. Her stubbornness again cropping up (pun intended) as her biggest flaw.

Lots of great moments for Pinkie, RD and of course AJ. More pouting from Apple Bloom and a crying Big Macintosh was great. Using what appears to be Lauren's original concept art of AJ as the photo the others were showing to try and find her. Fluttershy stopping the cart to avoid the bunny got a laugh out of me. Oh, yeah and I think a background character got some lines or something. icon-arcee.gif I was expecting a season finale down the line where Derpy would finally get a line at the very end or something like that, not this, and definately not the name drop. Good for her. icon-hotrod.gif

Fero, here's the "I Love Lucy" reference:

Ya-hoo! great ep this week! One of my favorites from S2 so far. Keep 'em coming!

Derpy was perfect, if you ask me. It's okay if she sounds "dumb", some people just are, and aren't bad folks, Forrest Gump, anyone?

The only way this could have been better is if she got put with Carrot Top or Dinky.

The rest of the episode was brilliant, plenty of Pinkie antics and lots of great lines and gags. I really liked this episode.

Yeah, during the C&D books. Though I highly doubt its an intentional fan nod as chimichanga is a fun word to say and worked with the cherry jokes.
wonko the sane?

You have to also take into account the flaws of the character. AJ is honest to a fault, but she's also incredibly prideful to the point of being stuck on herself. She made a promise to the town and when the world didn't allow for her to achieve it one way, she set out to do it another way. She saw herself as a failure and didn't want that to follow her home.

Also: guardian prime said the word "cannonization" on the first page... and I've played way too much saints row of late: now all I picture is derpy getting beat down.

Derpy, as a character was such a beautiful nod to the fandom/community. A kind, fun and helpful character with a cute voice. I am so happy to have seen her speak, I hope she gets more speaking roles in the future. I for one look forward to know more of her.
Thank you Studio B and affiliates.

I hope this doesn't mean today's episode was a one shot of Derpy talking. That would be pretty sad ):
