I figures she ends up trading them to the nice colt in the unmarked white stagecoach for all his candy; because no one offering candy can be evil.

Dear Princess Celestia,

Some people call me Baby Cakes

Now I, I call me Baby Cakes

I'm not ashamed to get excited

I get friends who get excited

I am Baby Cakes

I am Baby Cakes

I am the woooooorld
Waspinator
I suspect she'll call in the rest of the main six to help and they'll only make things worse. Rainbow Dash should not be around kids.
TM2-Megatron
You'd deprive Rainbow of her clean-up minions?

This episode should be good, though. However, I am surprised the Cakes would have Pinkie as a babysitter... I mean I'm sure they love her (who couldn't?), but Pinkie? Surely she's lived at Sugarcube Corner for long enough now that they're aware exactly how special she is. She's mostly just a big kid herself... but one who can bend reality on a whim and is more like a force of nature than a mere pony. On one hand I think Pinkie would make an awesome (or at least extremely fun) older-sibling-esque figure, but on the other... this is Pinkie we're talking about. It's a recipe for disaster, which of course should make for hilarity on TV.
Rezo
Not fond of baby-anythings in the media, so I enter with absolutely no positive expectations whatsoever.

Undead-Niklos is back, and brings us this message from Pinkie Pie and Trixie:

Also, on right now is a babysitting-focused episode of Phineas and Ferb. Funny how that works.

Indeed. Dinky and Derpy fans will be pleased to see confirmation that one type of pony can produce another type of offspring. Well, unless Mrs Cake has been sleeping around but that's very unlikely.

Pound and Pumpkin Cake sure are powerful for one month old fillies. And how creepy was the part where Pinkie was looking for Pound Cake?! The lighting, the music, everything just made it seem very creepy. I was convinced Pinkie was dreaming or something.

A good episode I thought. Pinkie got a few little musical numbers (and a stand up comedy routine) but I was expecting her Smile song to make an appearance.

Welcome! You have entered [The Well] at 7:55 am
[Dvandom] 7:55 am: Also, unless that's a regional hospital, Ponyville has an insane birth rate.
[Dvandom] 7:56 am: "That makes sense, right?" (Nervous twitch)
[scavgraphics] 7:56 am: sigh..Derpy/Dinkers just got proof
[pao] 7:56 am: evidence, not proof
[Dvandom] 7:57 am: [Mythbuckers] PLAUSIBLE
[scavgraphics] 7:57 am: thank you..I've been awake for 4 minutes...synapses not all online yet
[pao] 7:57 am: ^that
[Rezo] 7:57 am: Earth pony family. Getting only pegasi & unicorns.
[pao] 7:57 am: that was funnier than what I said
[The Well]: Caboose has entered at 7:57 am
[scavgraphics] 7:57 am: pao, well, he's a scientist
[pao] 7:57 am: explains the importance of flight schools
[Caboose] 7:58 am: Ba-dop doop
[pao] 7:58 am: is an engineer
[Rezo] 7:58 am: senses parenting difficulties in the future.
[sobana] 7:58 am: I see you like filling in plot holes now, mr. Nayuki
[sobana] 7:58 am: Good show
[scavgraphics] 7:58 am: there was a plot hole?
[sobana] 7:59 am: I thought they wouldn't explain that they had kids all this time
[Dvandom] 7:59 am: No one in my immediate family has blue eyes, but I do. Genetic recessives do pop up. OTOH, being around Pinkie so much has probably irradiated the Cakes or something.
[Nayuki] 7:59 am: plot isn't really my job
[Caboose] 8:00 am: Now, who said Pinkie wouldn't be good with kids?
[Rezo] 8:00 am: I was entertained by Mr. Cake's 'I can't sleep, can't shave, TOO NERVOUS' look
[pao] 8:00 am: well, good at entertaining kids
[Caboose] 8:00 am: PARTY WATCH
[Dvandom] 8:00 am: Clearly, this ep will be all about how it's not just the playing, there's all sorts of responsibility.
[pao] 8:01 am: so did I catch that Pinkie Pie has a Pinkie Pie watch?
[Dvandom] 8:01 am: Someone will no doubt point out that horses don't burp.
[Dvandom] 8:02 am: The multiple stomach arrangement doesn't really allow for it, IIRC.
[Dvandom] 8:02 am: Angel is a demanding boyfriend.
[Dvandom] 8:02 am: (And the Cakes clearly know not to ask Pinkie....)
[pao] 8:03 am: yep, last pony standing
[Dvandom] 8:03 am: Of course, they work with her, so they know better than anyone. icon-arcee.gif
[Dvandom] 8:04 am: (BOOM!)
[pao] 8:05 am: well, she's straight into "what was I thinking?" territory
[Dvandom] 8:05 am: Pretty sure a stack of cookies on the floor in front of the milk cooler breaks some health reg. (TrueMoo ad)
[sobana] 8:06 am: Rarity didn't give a reason why she wouldn't babysit, only my fanfic can explain that now!
[Rezo] 8:06 am: in b4 pinkie causes the entire mane cast to be involved, anyway.
[Rezo] 8:06 am: Btw, while I wouldn't exactly make pinkie my first pick, picking rainbow dash over her as a sitter was a low blow
[Dvandom] 8:06 am: In b4 Pinkie makes the parasprites look constructive.
[Rezo] 8:07 am: parasptrites are a vital part of the everfree ecosystem
[pao] 8:07 am: once you've unified the hoodie with the sweatpants, why not just include the feet, instead of making them a separate piece? (Forever Lazy ad)
[Dvandom] 8:07 am: Presumably they figured at least Dashie would know from Pegafillies.
[Dvandom] 8:08 am: RTFM
[Caboose] 8:09 am: There's your song, folks!
[Guardian Prime] 8:09 am: OINK OINK OINK!!
[scavgraphics] 8:09 am: as pigs are sentient...isn't this kind of racist?
[Rezo] 8:09 am: SURPRISE
[Caboose] 8:09 am: Pigs are sentient?
[Dvandom] 8:10 am: Pound Cake will definitely end up in Dashie's orbit at some point.
[pao] 8:11 am: youngest member of Scootaloo's Dash Fan Club?
[Caboose] 8:11 am: Uh.
[Dvandom] 8:11 am: Pound Cake is strong.
[pao] 8:12 am: d'ough!
[Caboose] 8:12 am: Did that baby just break a metal faucet?
[pao] 8:12 am: hits own rimshot like Pinkie
[Dvandom] 8:12 am: Pinkie in diaper
[Dvandom] 8:13 am: Ayuh
[Dvandom] 8:13 am: Twi has read a book.
[pao] 8:13 am: oh boy
[pao] 8:14 am: Pinkie feeling threatened much?
[Dvandom] 8:15 am: Been practicing the Flutterstare?
[Rezo] 8:15 am: srspinkie is efficient
[Rezo] 8:15 am: But prone of losing ponies
[sobana] 8:16 am: lol, I thought he was strong too when I saw him brake that metal faucet too.
[sobana] 8:17 am: Pinkie is out to prove something
[Dvandom] 8:17 am: Pound Cake will pound you.
[sobana] 8:17 am: I wonder if he only does that because they call him that.
[Dvandom] 8:18 am: Well, if he was kicking much in utero, they might have had an inkling.

[Dvandom] 8:34 am: You went astray at "Pinkie would have a better grasp of the situation" for any value of situation or grasp. icon-arcee.gif

I'm a bit confused by this episode. I'm not sure why. I think it's the ending. She breaks down and cries, and that solves everything? Or is it that she accepts that she can't do it and tones down her energy some? Someone help me out here?

Things I liked: Pony genetics
The Cakes asking everypony else BEFORE Pinkie. And asking Fluttershy FIRST.
Pinkie using toon gags to help her: Plunger walking, pulling things out of hammerspace, offscreen teleportation...
Refusing Twilight's help out of pride. Something I would do by accident myself.
Frazzled Pinkie: Something adorable about that.
Pinkie toning down her energy and WORKING during the letter. Sure, things can be fun and games, but sometimes it's WORK.

As for why Pound Cake can fly, perhaps weight ratios? He doesn't weigh enough to keep him grounded? Perhaps Scoots hasn't grown into her wings yet.
Pumpkins casting must be instinctual. She probably can't do it on command once she gets older, and she probably has the power from the mentioned spell surges.

Hold up, did Pinkie ever put the diapers back ON? Oh, THAT can't end well....

And the next day Pinkie went to get her tubes tied...

Well, it seems Surprise is fractionally canon now. The dark scene in the hallway was extremely well done. Pound Cake dragging Pinkie all over the place was possibly my favorite part (all kinds of gifs in that scene alone). I knew once the diaper scene started, Pinkie would end up wearing them. I predict wet mane Pinkie will be the next big thing. Another high tier episode in my opinion. Chock full of giffy goodness too.
Blueshift
Fantastic ep!

Scootaloo confirmed for worst pony! icon-arcee.gif
Dvandom
Well, to be fair, Fluttershy was still having trouble flying in high school. Pound Cakes is merely a Super Saiyan pony.

LoomX
I've seen it mentioned that Pound Cake's ability to fly could be akin to how a newborn baby is able to swim. They soon lose the ability and have to re-learn how to do it. Could be the same for pegasi and flying?
Dvandom
Pound Cake's ability to kick a metal pipe in half, however, is probably not typical of foals.

Rezo
I really liked the depth Pinkie acquired in this episode without it going over the top like in Party of One. She's still my least favourite pony, but her being more than merely comic relief (And even in Party of One, it was essentially just comic relief) was a most appreciated surprise. So she does have pride, and she can actually, seriously do what's needed if it's really, really needed - well, and overdoing it a little bit, or missapplying it, but still. Not just comic relief. That's great. And God knows, Pinkie needs deeper characterisation. Great to see she's finally provided with some.

I thought the little ones' lolpowers were just a little bit overdone, though, tbh. Yes, magic sparks, alright... But on a scale implying that the little one will rival Twilight when growing older? Uh...

The Cake's playing it patently straight, and asking everypony to babysit in exactly the order I think pretty much everyone would ask them was well-done, too - easy to just order them randomly, as long as Pinkie comes last, but nope. Thought out, that. And the Cake's worries when Pinkie was the last one standing (And already a sign of her pride, when she plays hard to get in that very moment, hee. Later reinforced when Twilight shows up). Probably a bit painful for Pinkie that they asked Rainbow Dash before her <_<

Twilight's nose being dented a little when Pinkie slammed the door before her was cute~

By and large, Ms. Fullerton (The writer) had avery difficult premise to work with - I hate baby episodes in pretty much everything -, but she solved it beautifully, considering said premise. It's still probably her weakest episode yet, but considering what the others were (Every last one of them brilliant and upper-tier), that's hardly a condemnation, even when ignoring the subject matter and the difficulties involved, which pretty much turn it into outright praise - the first time a baby-thing has come up in any media that I didn't outright hate, but rather, uhm, well... Enjoyed it. Huh.

I remain mostly excited for next week and complete mane cast interaction, though. The dreaded baby episode being decent was a nice surprise, but now for an episode for which I've ginormous expectations~
DrSpengler
Rugrats made me pretty much hate cartoon babies, so I wasn't expecting much from the episode. Plus, they already did the whole "Pony takes on babysitting responsibilities they can't handle" shtick last season.

So I was surprised by how much I liked this one. Pinkie has probably been my least favorite of the Mane 6, mostly because she tends to be "invincible" and here unwvering confidence and attitude makes her difficult to identify with.

But like "Party of One", I really liked this one because it took Pinkie out of her element and showed her behaving differently and having a hard time with something.

And the jokes were done well, I actually forgot how much I hate cartoon babies.

"Nom nom nom!"

"No no no!"

"Nom nom!"

"No no!"

"Nom."

"NO!"

I wouldn't rank it among my favorites of this season, but I liked it a lot more than I was expecting to.

Iīd ask Derpy before asking either Dash or Pinkie.
TM2-Megatron
We don't really know anything about Derpy's actual personality unless we go by fanon (in which case she has a kid herself, so obviously she'd make a good babysitter), so who's to say. The only ones of the main characters I can really see being good (in a responsible way) with children would be AJ, Rarity, and Fluttershy. Twilight would try, but I think she'd eventually be overwhelmed and rely too much on parenting books. Rainbow is just too irresponsible, and Pinkie is kind of the "fun aunt" figure, I guess. She'd be a blast for the kid to hang out with, but not necessarily the safest guardian. Although I think I would ask Pinkie before Rainbow; but the other 4 before either of them.

No Princess appearance in this one, and I would say it's far from the worst episode. It was fun and enjoyable.

Did anyone spot Derpy in this episode, or was she missing again?

LoomX
The stubble was a nice touch. Must've been a long labour for Mrs Cake.

Also, this song is now stuck firmly in my head.

Apparently, Daniel Ingram has said over on his FB page that it was originally written for the season 1 finale but was cut for time.
TM2-Megatron

Gotta love the looks on the kid's faces during Pinkie's song. They've definitely got a "WTF am I looking at?" vibe.

It's interesting how just a few tweaks can turn that baby pony design from extremely creepy into something you can actually call cute.

Needless to say, I think the unusual magical abilities of Pumpkin must have been examples of those "strange magic surges" that Rarity was talking about. I'd be interested to see if Twilight ever manages to pull off similar flight and matter phasing spells, though.
TM2 Dinobot
Wow. Forgot today was Saturday.

"That makes sense, right?" Pony genetics. I love they they canonized what we've been talking about for over a year. But really, it's the ONLY thing that makes sense. Mendallian Genetics at its purest.

Chuck Jones baby eyes! Creepy but a nice reference to one of my favorite animators of all time. Really this entire episode felt like one long Chuck Jones cartoon. Can't you just see Daffy where Pinkie is?

While I don't hate anyone, my apathy to Pinkie borders on dislike. This episode solidifies her character well. She's arrogant, boastful and mean spirited sometimes (Hey, if anything Discord showed we all have a dark side.) and generally all around not funny. But here she had a chance to shine. She wasn't a Mary Sue character. I loved that she turned down Twilight's help. I like that she thought it would be a piece of cake (hah!) and when she found out it wasn't, refused to give up out of pride, not determination. I think that's why she was crying at the end, because she'd been humbled.

I think that the cake babies won't be able to do any of that stuff when they're older. There's no way that Pound can fly and Scoots can't, or that Nom Nom is a better Unicron than Twilight. I think they did it for a) comedy relief and b) because it was a power phasing thing, like Jack Jack Attack. Someone mentioned babies can swim but toddlers can't. Same thing.

Pinkie's first "Let me check my schedule" face. OMG, that sold me right there. I want that gif'd so bad. She totally looked like an Animaniacs character. Maybe Minerva Mink or someone. Can't quite place it.

Asking the girls. They did it in the right order I think. Fluttershy is the go-to girl. Twilight works for the Princess so she might be free, and saved the town from the Ursa Minor, Hydra, Nightmare Moon, ect. The only reason they didn't ask AJ second was because they knew she'd probably be busy. And Rarity has a sister, she she'd be okay. (Which, as an aside, I love that Rarity just said 'no." You don't always have to give a reason to turn something down.) The only one that doesn't make sense is Dash, but with as good a friend as Dash and Pinkie are, maybe the Cakes heard Pinkie talk about Dash all the time.

Twilight. Bless her pea-pickin little heart. I love that girl but I can't see her being outstanding 'mother' material. She's just too... feather brained. She could be a good mom someday, and she'd try her best to be a good baby sitter, but I suspect this episode could have replaced Pinkie with Twilight and we'd have the same results. Heck, Spike would be a better babysitter than either of them.

Surprise, it's Surprise!

Pinkie's standup routine. The sound effects were hilarious, and the double Pinkie was great.

Pinkie cleaning was as great a lesson as the entire episode. Kids/girls need to know that babysitting is work. It's fun at times, but when you've got two or three of them, they'll drive you crazy. Trust me, I know.

Over all, I liked this episode because it was off kilter and fun. And in a rare stroke, Pinkie Pie was funny. icon-hotrod.gif
Dvandom
Actually, Mendellian genetics don't quite cover it. The cited relative on Mrs. Cake's side is "twice removed" which means in-law. No direct genetic link. icon-hotrod.gif

QUOTE
When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship.

The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed."

Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.

Actually, Mendellian genetics don't quite cover it. The cited relative on Mrs. Cake's side is "twice removed" which means in-law. No direct genetic link. icon-hotrod.gif

Even with Scavīs correction regarding the "twice removed" part, Dvandomīs point still stands. Cupcakeīs "great auntīs second cousin twice removed" is not part of Pound Cakeīs direct genetic ancestry, not by a long shot.

Thatīs not supposed to be a hint of how their genetics work though, but the setup for a great and subtle joke, and Destron already mentioned it:

No, Mr Cake, Iīm afraid it does not... and you damn well know it, lol

My favorite line of the episode as well.

Maybe Mr. Cake mentioned that relative of his wife's simply to indicate that there was precedent in her family for the occasional Pegasi birth, meaning that at some point in the past relative to both known specimen there was an introduction of Pegasi genes into the family.

We are all in agreement that there was an introduction of pegasi genes... Mr Cake does not seem to sure as to WHEN this introduction occured.

So... I guess it is safe to assume that Scootaloo was born and lives in Ponyvilel and has family there as well then?

Did I miss something? Weren't we already assuming that?

Well, I always assumed Scootaloo didn't live in Ponyville and didn't go to that school, and that she was only there over the summer. Cause AppleBloom didn't have a clue who they were in the Cutiemark episode. But then they're both in class with the Zap Apples, and on the school field trip that freed Discord, and in the talent show. Honestly I don't know what to think now.

And the next day Pinkie went to get her tubes tied...

For the good of all of equestria, I'm sure.

I was also reminded somewhat of the Jack-Jack Attack short, although Pinkie didn't have quite as much difficulty as Kari, lol.

There's no way that Pound can fly and Scoots can't
Personally, I maintain this as further evidence of Scootaloo's mom consuming thalidomides during her pregnancy.

Those wings? They'll never grow to support flight.

Never.

So, can other unicorns learn to fly? I want to see Twilight use ponykinesis.
