Spike gets greedy on his birthday and has a massive growth spurt which threatens to decimate all of Ponyville.

Looking forward to it.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't see your chat pic there Scavs. Actually, it seems to be absent in the other episode threads too.

Unfortunately I won't be able to make it to chat in the morning. I'm in the middle of a clutch replacement (actually, just past the middle; I've got the transmission mounted back to the engine) and I start getting charged for the bay again at the stroke of pony, so I need to be there.

I was really looking forward to the Spike episode, too. I'll have to catch it after it goes up on YouTube. Enjoy chat, everyone!

The image host seems to be down...I'll need to find another gift hoster.
Don_East
Not really keen on this, I didn't like "Owl's Well That Ends Well" and admittedly Spike being full of himself can get on my nerves. Who knows, maybe this can be good.
Sobana
I'm in the chat all by my self this time? =(
nuclearsuplex
Another amazing episode. The team did a great job here. M A Larson is so good at writing ponies.
Blueshift
I wasn't looking forward to a Spike ep and Owls Well was a bit meh, but HOLY CRAP what a brilliant episode! Seriously, flippin' heck!
LoomX
Well that ended differently to how I imagined. I was convinced it was all going to be a dream. I'm glad that wasn't the case.

The episode itself was very good. The Doctor and Vet were good characters I thought, and I think this is the first episode where I've found the hidden Derpy first time
HIGHLIGHT to view:
I think she was with Lyra and Bon Bon, popping out of the well behind them

Also, Twilight has a globe. I'm sure that will be analyzed by fans to try and make a map of their world icon-hotrod.gif

[sobana] 7:20 am: I bet rarity's amulet will save the day
[Dvandom] 7:21 am: (It's sad that Play-Doh ads have to end with a shouted "Fun to play with, not to eat!" disclaimer.)
[Rezo] 7:21 am: does like the plot a lot here. Nice connection to dragon's habit of collecting shinies as per mythology~
[sobana] 7:21 am: Because kids are stupid
[Caboose] 7:22 am: And I really like how divergent Spike's design is from the the "normal" dragon design.

[Dvandom] 7:27 am: Draconic shorthand.
[Caboose] 7:28 am: That was an awesome episode.
[scavgraphics] 7:28 am: ok, time for the watch
[Dvandom] 7:28 am: Naughty or Nice finals are running about 8-to-1 pony.
[Caboose] 7:28 am: No wings~ No wings~!
[Dvandom] 7:28 am: Spikezilla
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:29 am: Spike is really neat, he is filled with dragon meat...
[Rezo] 7:29 am: I love Rarity as (Not really) damsel in distress~
[Rezo] 7:30 am: And Twilight. 'The art of to do lists... I've got to read that one again'. lol
[Dvandom] 7:30 am: Damsel in annouance.
[Dvandom] 7:30 am: Annoyance
[Rezo] 7:30 am: continuityyyyyyyyyyy~
[scavgraphics] 7:30 am: hee..OCD Twilight is OCD
[Rezo] 7:31 am: Damsel in Annoyance fits~
[scavgraphics] 7:31 am: Aging rubies to bring out the flavor, Alton Brown would approve
[Caboose] 7:31 am: Kinda bothered me a little that Twilight made Spike help set up his own party. =P
[Rezo] 7:32 am: Rarity, deadpan damsel.
[Dvandom] 7:32 am: "Alvin and the Chlpmunks 13: Woodchipped" was an attempt to broaden the franchise into slasher horror, and was generally dismissed by critics.
[Dvandom] 7:34 am: And the disaster caused by Spike guilting people out of gifts is saved because Rarity is better at guilting people out of gifts.
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:34 am: Now I ain´t saying she´s a gold digger...
[Rezo] 7:34 am: Fun fact: Now that we know that dragons mature on account of character development rather than food or age, Spike can be Twi's dragon forever~
[Nayuki] 7:35 am: not necessarily
[Dvandom] 7:35 am: But what about all the sad adult Spike fics? icon-arcee.gif
[scavgraphics] 7:35 am: so....the episode will be to teach the young bronies to beware women, as they'll take all your cool stuff?
[Caboose] 7:35 am: I love how Twi accidentally teleports Pinkie Pie in instead of Spike.
[Rezo] 7:35 am: Twilight's such an older sister~
[Rezo] 7:36 am: I said can, Nayuki. Not /will/ :-p
[Caboose] 7:36 am: Gee, thanks Rainbow Dash, this dumbell is... Great...
[Nayuki] 7:36 am: better than a book?
[Dvandom] 7:37 am: This does make it less than a year since Nightmare Moon. Continuity trackers are gonna plotz.
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:37 am: Continuity-apologists will ind some excuses
[Caboose] 7:37 am: I hope Spike's new hat gets to stick around like RD's sunglasses.
[Rezo] 7:37 am: Dvandom: Exactly. These fics are now all invalid~
[Rezo] 7:38 am: Sweet, delicious tears of fic writers~
[scavgraphics] 7:38 am: Cherilee walks around with pimp hats to give out?
[Caboose] 7:38 am: Oh hey! Lyra and Bon Bon!
[Dvandom] 7:38 am: "I have a pimp hat. Your fanfic is invalid."
[Rezo] 7:38 am: Lyra & Bonbon again~
[Rezo] 7:38 am: Awww, love can bloom~
[Caboose] 7:40 am: Lyra and Bon Bon is 2nd best ship
[Caboose] 7:40 am: (After Luna x Abacus, of course.)
[Rezo] 7:40 am: The reptile in spike is scary~
[Nayuki] 7:40 am: so you all saw lyra/bonbon, but missed derpy?
[Rezo] 7:41 am: GOD DAMMIT
[Caboose] 7:41 am: I guess so!
[Rezo] 7:41 am: 1 : 0 behind -_-
[scavgraphics] 7:41 am: missed all 3, if it's just happened
[Rezo] 7:41 am: (Sorry, football)
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:41 am: soccer...
[Dvandom] 7:41 am: I'm sure screencaps of all three will have shown up online already.
[Nayuki] 7:41 am: soccer is definitely better than handegg
[Rezo] 7:42 am: derpy occasionally takes a while to show up
[Guardian Prime] 7:42 am: Did Spike have a second pair of eyelids there a minute ago when his eyes did that lizard thing? I'm not sure.
[Rezo] 7:42 am: Football is very nice wqhen you're not losing against THE WORST TEAM IN THE ENTIRE LEAGUE
[Rezo] 7:42 am: But I digress
[Nayuki] 7:43 am: derpy wasn't storyboarded in the episode, so I made sure to sneak her in
[Caboose] 7:43 am: I generally find Football more interesting to watch than soccer.
[scavgraphics] 7:43 am: yay nayuki
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:43 am: both bore me to tears...
[Kein] 7:43 am: http://images.4chan.org/co/src/1323531897888.jpg
[Nayuki] 7:44 am: I hate all the diving in professional soccer, but overall prefer it to american football
[Caboose] 7:44 am: Ha!
[Caboose] 7:44 am: Awesome, Nayuki.
[scavgraphics] 7:44 am: new Doctor pony
[Rezo] 7:45 am: Seriously, this spike is made increasingly scary increasingly efficiently~
[Nayuki] 7:45 am: baby doctor (pediatrician?)
[Rezo] 7:45 am: You can feel his increasing loss of control~
[scavgraphics] 7:45 am: there's a v et who's not fluttershy?
[Caboose] 7:45 am: And I really like how much Zecora has been showing up this season.
[Nayuki] 7:46 am: fluttershy isn't a vet
[scavgraphics] 7:46 am: doctor, animal doctor, wtch doctor
[Kein] 7:47 am: Nayuki, are those just a party dresses for this ep: http://images.4chan.org/co/src/1323531958556.png ?
[Kein] 7:47 am: Or they will be re-used?
[Dvandom] 7:47 am: Spike has studied cartoon physics.
[Nayuki] 7:47 am: I can't talk about anything beyond this episode
[Rezo] 7:48 am: still wants to see one of Lauren's sparkly pwettydwagons~
[Kein] 7:48 am: lemme re-phrase: those dresses didn'texist untilthis ep?
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:48 am: Rainbows reaction is priceless
[scavgraphics] 7:48 am: how'd they get tied up?
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:49 am: gross incompetence
[Nayuki] 7:49 am: yes, they are a new design
[Dvandom] 7:49 am: Law of slapstick topology, Scav.
[Rezo] 7:49 am: Lots of continuity. Fluttershy's dragonphobia, too
[Dvandom] 7:49 am: Cake Assault flash game will likely be available by next week.
[Nayuki] 7:49 am: I look forward to it
[Dvandom] 7:51 am: Fushigi looks pretty cool at first glance, but upon more careful inspection it's horribly lame.
[scavgraphics] 7:51 am: fushigi are far less cool looking in real life
[Guardian Prime] 7:51 am: Commercials, Commercials, Commercials.
[scavgraphics] 7:52 am: i mean, did they miss? did he do it
[WorkbenchManiac] 7:52 am: David Bowie had on of those in Labyrinth, didn´t he?
[Dvandom] 7:52 am: Well, he had glass spheres.
[scavgraphics] 7:52 am: that's what they want you to think
[Guardian Prime] 7:52 am: They missed, Scavs. Hit the tree instead.

[Rezo] 7:53 am: How rude~
[Rezo] 7:53 am: The wobbling water was showing off with flash, right? <_<
[scavgraphics] 7:53 am: Rarity has gotten better at dealing with her hair being meesed u by monsters
[Dvandom] 7:53 am: Kein: Well, the summary has been out a while, it could have been worked on in advance.
[Dvandom] 7:54 am: Heh, didn't notice the "yadda yadda" hand gesture the first time around.
[Dvandom] 7:55 am: Spike's memory is a Stargate?
[sobana] 7:55 am: I like how they used that cave from "dragonshy"
[Guardian Prime] 7:56 am: I like how they just float there for a few seconds before falling.
[Dvandom] 7:56 am: <Wonderbolts> So...c-c-c-cold....
[scavgraphics] 7:56 am: fluttershy gets a new pose
[scavgraphics] 7:56 am: wonderbolts heh
[Rezo] 7:57 am: The wonderbolts have an interesting habit of always screwing up when trying to save someone
[Kein] 7:57 am: dammit, I need to waittil youtube :<
[scavgraphics] 7:57 am: someone who was here please post the transcript
[Kein] 7:57 am: missed stream
[Dvandom] 7:57 am: Well, they're really just performers, not a military unit.
[Nayuki] 7:57 am: I'll post the transcript
[scavgraphics] 7:58 am: you make the toon AND post the transcript?
[Dvandom] 7:58 am: Seriously, we need a Top Gear/Chuck and Friends crossover.
[scavgraphics] 7:58 am: you rock!

Once again, M.A. Larson proves to be the Steven Moffat of Ponies as he wrote another fun & memorable episode.

* Figured this would turn into a King Kong parody, did not expect the Wonderbolts to pop in at one point.
* So does Rarity know Spike has a crush on her, I wonder if this will develop?
* Even if this was a Spike & Rarity heavy episode, Larson still finds a way to make RD do something awesome, in this case she & Fluttershy saving the falling Rarity & Spike.
* Derpy's cameo involves her popping up in between Lyra & BonBon? Brilliant.
* I admit I was concerned for Fluttershy when I heard her scream, stupid big brother instinct.
* So Ponyville has a regular vet? And a quack of a medic.
* Spike writing his own letter to the Princess is always a nice touch.
* Fluttershy: "We did it! I can't believe we did it! D'awww."
* So five ponies bring that many gifts for Spike? Animation goof or did somepony is a big spender.

Grade: A

I'm fairly sure Rarity has always known about Spike's crush. I mean, it's pretty obvious, and she's not oblivious. Spike is a baby dragon, she's a pony. I seriously doubt she shares his romantic interest, but cares for him as a friend/little brother sort of way.

I had fun with the Derpy cameo, I don't get many chances to do scenes with background ponies this season, but when I do, I try to make the most of them.

So Nayuki, canon map of Equestria and confirmation that this is a planet:

or just a random asset for the setup/composition of a scene?

Um... we don't have anything like an official map of Equestria... it's just one of those things that isn't fully fleshed out. So for now, let's just say it's a random asset.

A big part of me wants Equestria to be flat icon-hotrod.gif

1. You'd think Twilight would've learned to go to Zecora first by now. Although for a student who goes to a school where hatching a dragon partner is part of the entrance exam, you'd think Twilight would have already known what was going on.

2. If Ponyville already has a veterinarian, what is Fluttershy's job then?

3. Will we ever learn the name of the third wonderbolt?

4. Finally, a talking Cherilee appearance outside of a CMC episode!

Animal Caretaker. She feeds and cares for them, but she is not equipped to do medical procedures more serious than caring for minor illnesses or redressing injuries.

Still, given Fluttershy's known fangirlsqueeing over dragons, you'd think she'd be the first one Twi would go ask.

She still might be afraid of a huge, gigantic, terrifying, enormous, teeth-gnashing, sharp-scale-having, horn-wearing, smoke-snoring, could-eat-a-pony-in-one-bite, totally-all-grown-up dragon. I wonder why Fluttershy just didn't stare Spike into submission now that I think about it? Not wanting to use it on a friend perhaps?
Master Fwiffo
Oh.
My.
God.

Godzilla and King Kong references.
In My Little Pony.

This episode wins best ever for that alone.

When Spikezilla went on his rampage, I was grinning like an idiot. That was simply the best thing to come out of this show ever. Even though the rest of the episode was a little average, once he became Spikezilla, that was pure and total gold.

I love this show.

This does, however, raise interesting questions about a Dragon's life-cycle. Does this mean that Spike can be young forever as long as he doesn't get too much stuff? Can those nasty green and red dragons we've seen shrink suddenly if they have a Grinch moment and find their hearts are 3 sizes too small? Or does greed simply accelerate the aging process?
ZeroX
Given that the dragons we've seen so far essentially have the same level of immortality Luna and Celestia have until mentioned otherwise, I'd say hoarding is directly tied to the dragon aging process, especially since the two MASSIVE dragons we've met so far both have MASSIVE hoards. I would just assume that after hoarding for thousands of years it becomes much more difficult to revert, especially since a dragon's heart is inclined towards greed.
MrBlud
Presumably it can be managed WITH FRIENDSHIP!

It doesn't seem like Dragons (even Spike before ponyville) have many friends to talk them down. I don't think it stops Spike's aging but he may not have to get huge if he's not greedy.
DrSpengler
Wow, that episode did NOT go the direction I thought it would.

When it began, I figured it was going to be one of those things were Spike starts getting greedy and goes overboard in swindling presents from other ponies, maybe casts a spell or something that goes haywire and he learns a lesson about moderation and gratitude, etc. The scene where he was going around telling every pony in town it was his birthday seemed to have the episode concretely moving in that direction...

Then BAM. Dragon puberty.

The episode went to a totally different place, fitting in the show's own unique vision of dragon mythology that simultaneously explained the disparity between Spike and the dragons we've seen so far in the series.

I loved every character's part in the story. Especially Pinkie Pie; "I'm ASSAULTING him with cake!"

It was a really good episode.
TM2-Megatron
I enjoyed this one. The King Kong homage was quite funny, and I loved the "nag, nag, nag" gesture "adult" Spike made when Rarity was telling him off... hey, they're practically married already, lol!

We've seen several variations now on what a "grown-up" Spike might look like. This one resembled the other dragons we've seen more than the others, although his facial features were cruder, reminiscent of a "caveman" or something; no doubt reflecting his state of mind. The artificial growth spurt he got from Twilight just after hatching was pretty paedomorphic-looking, which also reflected his mental-self at the time. Perhaps mature dragons can take any number of forms, depending on such factors.
WorkbenchManiac
I just gave the episode another watch on youtube, since the livestream earlier today kept cutting out every now and then, so there have been sequences I did not get to see fully and uninterrupted.

And I noticed something that makes me all kinds of giggly: During the scene in which Spike plunders Sugarcube Corner, then undergoes a growth-spurt and destroys the building, the background music plays the first few bars of the Godzilla theme.

A very enjoyable episode once again. So many funny moments, as well as nice character moments, like Rainbow Dash having a fit of laughter at Twilight and AJ´s expense.

Was I hearing things, or did I actually hear "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" throughout the episode?

It's the Jimmy Hart version, but yes, it came up twice that I noticed; once during the reshelving, and again when Twilight was using the broom as a lure.

Everything I was hoping for in a Spike episode. Others have already pointed out everything I wanted to.
For the record, the clutch job is done and my car is back in business!
crazyjw18
Very cool episode. I was also pleased to see Cheerilee get a decent part, and we got some more names if nothing else. Thought it was a little jarring to include Lickety Split but make it a colt. I was all excited about June Bug for a moment, but then realized it wasn't Honeybuzz. Kinda really wish the designers and Hasbro would work together on this sorta thing. Toys with no appearances and characters with no toys make me a bit sad.

The Spike-Rarity scenes were very well done. Rarity really is quite the opportunitist, charming a baby dragon out of his heartstone right before his birthday, but that's just her. Generous but conniving.

I liked the Bonbon-Lyra-Derpy scene being thrown in. Derpy just pops in everywhere now, the perfect easter egg when she's not doing an actual scene. I'm hoping she hasn't been completely removed from the general pool of background ponies, I like a balance of normal derpy in the crowd as well.

So Spike having wings when he gets older naturally does seem unlikely now. Well, more unlikely, most animals don't sprout extra limbs later in life anyhow.... but yeah.

Zecora really should write some books. She's apparantly got way more info than the library does.
ZeroX
QUOTE(Kein @ Dec 10 2011, 04:41 PM) *
Well I hope you do realize that his growing was quite "unnatural" thus he had no wings and didn't look like other dragons. I mean - it was pointed obviously...

Zecora specifically said Spike was maturing, that a dragon's heart is naturally inclined towards greed, and that their monstrous appearance and growth occurs as their greed grows. Nothing she said, nothing at all indicated that what was happening to Spike was anything but a natural part of a dragon's maturity.

Yeah, if you want to overanalzye much - sure. So, he was maturing and you think this process is quite normal to him and any dragon? Okay, explain to me then his sudden de-maturing. No "magic" arguments please, give explanation in the same key as you started this convo.

My point still stands - it WASN'T natural growth/maturing of him.

Taking Zecora's own words verbatim doesn't really constitute "over-analyzing". Besides, we're all guilty of over-analyzing things from the series now and then in these threads - yourself included. Nobody's obligated to agree with everything everybody says, but at the same time dismissing things you personally disagree while offering no actual counterpoints seems a little counter-productive.

The fact is there's still a lot we don't know anything about with regards to the FiM Universe; particularly some of the odder aspects of its animal and plant life, which includes the sapient species. I think it might be safe to assume Zecora knows more than the audience, though. And Dragons, being inherently magical to one degree or another, might be subject to things most animals aren't.

No spell was cast on Spike, and nothing external influenced him. The "unnatural" (as you call it) growth he experienced originated solely within himself as a result of his own greed and actions. What's to stop a "wild" dragon from experiencing this same phenomenon, and likely a lot sooner than Spike since most dragons don't grow up surrounded by generous ponies with positive influences/etc? While what happened to Spike may not be desirable, I see nothing "unnatural" about it since it's apparently something dragons are innately capable of undergoing.

^Here's the question...if becoming a greedy jerk is in a Dragon's nature, why was Twilight teamed with Spike? We didn't see other Dragons in the (brief) look at other magic students, so it could be thought that hatching Spike was a unique test for Twilight which, given Celestia's Batman Gambit tendency, means she has plans for him.....
BB Shockwave
Well, Spike did grow to adult size in a matter of hours, which is not how dragons grow up, usually. Perhaps this juvenile grow spurth is something all dragons pass through when they are young? Perhaps they need to come to terms with their inherent greed. Who knows...

I liked Spike's final design - although he went through a phase where he looked just like in Cutie Mark Chronicles, the final form was much cooler. And I cheered when he finally told Rarity about his feelings and she understood. icon-hotrod.gif Overall, a cute episode with some hilarious moments, cameos and hints to previour episodes (same mountain as in Dragonshy, Wonderbolts) lots of new ponies (I especially liked the doctor, sounded familiar too). My favourite moment though was when Twilight teleports Spike over and over, and suddenly, Pinkie Pie appears instead of Spike. Clearly, she has a wild magic aura around her. icon-hotrod.gif

Also - the "Naughty and Nice" advertisement afterwards said Dan vs. Discord, and Optimus Prime vs. Pinkie Pie... now these are contensts I'd LOVE to see animated. (I wonder if Prime knows how to bake cakes...)

And I noticed something that makes me all kinds of giggly: During the scene in which Spike plunders Sugarcube Corner, then undergoes a growth-spurt and destroys the building, the background music plays the first few bars of the Godzilla theme.

Cool! I was hoping for a reference to that (or Blue Oyster cult's 'Godzilla'). I'll keep an ear out for it next watch.

Again, you didn't explain anything. We saw other dragons in the show as well. Basil (the red one from Daragonshy), when was forced to leave her place and thus leave all his scrab didn't change his form after that, while Spike, when left his greed behind him, returned back t on normal.

Again? It's my first time discussing this theory. And we know nothing about the history of either of the previous dragons, so there's absolutely nothing we can say about them with certainty. The red one didn't seem like that much of a jerk; just annoyed at being woken up from what was supposed to be a 1000-year nap (no worse than Dash would probably be if you tried to wake her up, lol). The green dragon was more than enough of a jerk and obsessed with his gold to have been the result of a greed-induced growth spurt at some point in his past. Or he could've just grown up normally and turned out to be a jerk; who knows.

> dragons in MLP:FiM can grow only under circumstances of their greed that hey feed by grabbing tons of things (direct reference to common portrayal of a dragon in the myths "sitting on the gold")

It doesn't really imply that at all. Not that it's the sole method by which a dragon can grow, anyway. Clearly, it is one of the ways (had nothing interferred with Spike, he wouldn't have changed back; so it seems likely there are dragons in that world who've grown to maturity in this fashion); but not the only one. Not a desirable one, either, from the looks of it. But unnatural? No. What Twilight did to him as a filly, now that was unnatural.

QUOTE(Kein @ Dec 10 2011, 07:32 PM) *
> any dragon can be returned back to his/her baby form by surpassing their greed

It doesn't imply this, either. There's too much left unsaid. The change could become permanent after the dragon has been transformed for a certain amount of time (a great deal of magical transformations work this way in fiction... you only have a small window in which to reverse them or you're out of luck), or any number of other possibilities.

I'm not saying I agree with this theory personally, but there are so many other possibilities than the inflexible options you're listing for it.

icon-ironhide.gif Another great episode! Too many funny moments to mention.

I liked "Owls Well That Ends Well," but this one was much more entertaining.

Now that we've seen Spike as a kaiju, could a K-girl version be far behind? (Totally safe and clothed, I drew it tonight.)

Oh, I knew I forgot something. The magic treadmill was a clever gag. Pinkie Pie was a bonus.
Waspinator
Twilight accidentally Pinkie Spike.
TM2-Megatron
That may be an indicator that Pinkie accomplishes the (seemingly) impossible movement she's capable of through the same higher-dimensional realm that Twilight's teleportation makes use of. Some kind of Equestrian version of subspace or hyperspace. When Twilight was using her teleport on Spike, she accidentally yoinked Pinkie out of it on her way somewhere.
TM2 Dinobot
Or Pinkie has Haruhi like powers and is actually a god.

This is quite possibly my new favorite episode, finally surpassing Dog and Pony Show. And that's a tough title to dethrone for me. Absolutely everything about this was amazing.

I love the slut "come hither" eyes that Bon Bon was making at Lyra before Derpy showed up.
I love pimp hat Spike.
I love the reptile eyes Spike has. And also the tongue that showed up in Lesson Zero made an appearance.
The Scourer's Apprentice music with the broom. The Godzilla music with Spike. he King Kong stuff.
Oh, and Rarity asking is Spike was going to eat her now. Confirmation that dragons sometimes eat ponies? (I doubt those teeth are just for jewels)
Fluttershy being adorable.
Pinkie being awesome.
Dash laughing at AJ and Twi all tied up.
Rarity/Spike moment as they're falling to their deaths.

I'm serious. I LOVE this episode! Possibly the best ever.

QUOTE(Zecora @ Dec 10 2011, 10:43 PM) *
Given that the dragons we've seen so far essentially have the same level of immortality Luna and Celestia have until mentioned otherwise, I'd say hoarding is directly tied to the dragon aging process, especially since the two MASSIVE dragons we've met so far both have MASSIVE hoards. I would just assume that after hoarding for thousands of years it becomes much more difficult to revert, especially since a dragon's heart is inclined towards greed.

Well I hope you do realize that his growing was quite "unnatural" thus he had no wings and didn't look like other dragons. I mean - it was pointed obviously...

Otherwise, it implies that Spike will never grow up and he won't be "normal". Which is quite... silly if not just dumb if I may note.

Buffaloes once mentioned that they respect Dragons. Definitely not for their greed.

For someone so fond of destroying fanon, I'm surprised you're so against the idea of Spike just being a non-winged dragon.

Which really, is pretty darn great. Wingless Spike is best Spike, and the more 'types' of dragons the better.

If ponies can come in three flavours, why not Dragons?

TM2-Megatron
This episode did seem to give the Rarity/Spike shipping crowd a big boost. If the past is any indication, though, this won't be followed up on in the future in any consistent fashion. Certain writers seem to like using the Spike crushing on Rarity angle, and others totally ignore it. I thought it was put to cuter usage than normal in this week's episode, though. In the past we've seen Rarity take a wee bit advantage of Spike (not maliciously, of course) and his on-again, off-again slavish devotion to the ground upon which she trots. But she came off in a very good light this week, and at least confirmed that she's aware of the way he feels. Unless Spike's true adult form is along the lines of the humanoid one from his daydream, though, even if she were interested when he grew up, there'd certainly be some challenges to overcome.

I lost track. Has the effete dragon from the pilot been mentioned in the whole life/development cycle of Equestrian Dragons debate? He didn't seem to hoard-y or overtly beastial.

I think he might be considered more along the lines of a sea serpent then a dragon, but I doubt it's been considered at all.
corgsopal
Seems like it could be an important exclusion. If we're dividing dragons into 3 categories (like ponies), Land Sea and Air seem as good as any.
Cabooceratops
Oh! That wasn't a serious suggestion, I was just showing how there's precedent for there to be very divergent body plans in a single "species" in the FiM universe, so Spike and 'Dragonshy' could both be 'proper' dragons even if one has wings and the other doesn't.

[Fanon]I personally wouldn't consider Steven Magnet a proper dragon, simply because both dragon types we know of (Land and Sky), are similar in shape and size(Like Pegasi/Unicorns/Earth Ponies are.), and Steven Magnet doesn't really 'fit' that(He could be a variant of the Lung, I dunno.). (And also because I'd like to imagine a 'sea' dragon as more along the lines of Mosasaurus or a crocodile.)[/Fanon]
corgsopal
Oh. I've been drawing the comparison to Steve Magnet all day, before I came into the discussion. I thought it made perfect sense. Guess it's just me then.
