I'm liking how caves and ravines are made, some of them are very cleverly hidden. I'm having a ton of fun just wander around the world, finding some little hole to poke my head into and then building a survival shelter to help me explore the spot. My world save has already ballooned up to 40 meg. Biggest I've ever done so far.
Okies, loving 1.8.1 and had time to kill, so here's the carto of my world. The name is Autobots and the seed was "Transform and Roll Out".
So far, I found a village, about four ravines, one dungeon (which you can see in the desert, its outlined by the four torches. and enough clay to sink a ship. There's TWO ravines near the hunting lodge (which is the tree house in the swamp to the south, follow the line of the bridge and look for a single torch on a tree.) The arrows to the west indicate 1.) another under water cavern access, and 2.) the spot where I got lost and hard to lumberjack the tree lines so I could figure out where I was. You can see the farm and bridges I built, but not my primary base which is just some rooms cut into the mountain side there. My next project is to cut sand and lay down gravel paths to and from both the swamp hunting lodge and the village, in which I occupy one of the houses. Haven't found a good place to build a castle yet, so I'm just gonna keep exploring, making roads and ancillary survival shelters when I hit good resource spots.

woot. i finished my town just in time for 1.9.

It's pretty obvious the NPC's are just tests. I can't put my feelings into words - it's on the tip of my tongue, or should I say, hovering just over my head like supernatural letters?
I hope 1.9 doesn't screw with 1.8 the way 1.8 did with 1.7, I've got a nice little castle going and I really don't want to start over. Oh well, wouldn't be the first time and won't be the last.
Now, TO THE PRE-RELEASE CAVE! *whirly transition*

So I went back and watched some of the old Yogcast stuff and it suddenly hit me just how much Minecraft has changed. It's been slow, plodding and sometimes frustrating, but especially with the 1.8 update, it's taken on a whole new level of awesome. The new biomes, the Nether Ruins, the ever increasing number of mobs and things you can build just keep coming and now that were out of the whole 'figuring out how to make it work' aspect of development, things should only be getting better.

Whats the error and did you google for answers?

Sep 23 2011, 11:54 AM
I have googled it, the other people who have the error seem to be on Linux or running Ubuntu (what the jeff is that?) or something to do with an ATI card. I'm fairly certain I don't have either of those, I'm on a Windows 7 that's just over a year old, nvidia geforce graphics, and this problem has only happened since I got the 1.9 pre-release.
Update: A clean re-install seems to have done the trick yet again.

Ubuntu is a linux derivative. The popular one for the people who know how to code and do the work of making the machine on their own. Also pretty good on servers, or so I'm told.
Glad you got it worked out man.

Yeah I like the snow golems. Its too bad you can't make them with pistons. It would be kind of cheating, but it would be really cool.
It seems that they don't like to jump down from more than 4 blocks. So you can easily make sentries.
Also, they won't touch lava, so you can have them fire at monsters from a single spot in a lava pool. They will walk right into fire though...

Well, the save folder says it was created on the 14th, and my earliest screenshot of the area is from the 17th. So ten days to almost two weeks. The castle is the main item for show, but there are also watch towers across the lake, a ruin that houses a portal and a quarry in the desert. If I knew a good (free/inexpensive) program to use, I'd create a video tour.
To be fair, I've done this kind of castle-thing about half a dozen times now, and each time it gets a little bit better looking. I learn a lot from each round of building... such as making the inner wall extra thick just in case I do get a creeper in there, and making the outer door self-shut by using a pressure pad on the inside. I even have a piston based barrier blocking the outer door to keep mobs from waiting right outside the door for me.
I've have cheated twice, though:
Once to clear out part of the area behind the castle, using MCedit. Just went in and deleted a section of blocks. The price I paid for that was that I lost all the resource I would have gained from mining it properly. I was just feeling lazy that day and frustrated with hacking away at block after block after block, so I just deleted the last two dozen or so just to get the area cleared out.
I also used MCedit to move my spawn point closer to the castle, since, apparently the castle sits too low for the game to normally reset my spawn to the bed... which is odd, but whatever.
There's a story I'm working on that goes with the castle... basically it started out as a storage place cut into the side of a hill, for the use of the desert quarry, but as more and more valuable resource was found, it became necessary to build a protective wall around it and later a second wall, then a watch tower, and then forges, food production, etc as the quarry grew and required more workers. Eventually the ruins (and the portal within) require the building of more watch towers and the reinforcement of the camp as a stronghold to defend against the Nether creatures that occasionally escape from it.
I plan to add houses and other structures around the castle to represent the dwellings of the lower-class workers in addition to underground storage rooms and halls and so on...
... I love world building, can you tell?

Yeah, there is an unprecedented level of habitatforming in minecraft. And seeing your world take shape as you work at it... strangely satisfying. I usually build underground though, to try to preserve the natural world as much as I can. I guess I'm just a hippie at heart.

I've taken to finding a good spot, and building UP to level it, as opposed to bulldozing to flatten. I think that is a bit faster (if you have the resources) and it looks pretty natural. After all real buildings have real foundations. (Some buildings have unreal foundations noted with the number i.)

Auto jumping has been put back. There was a lot of hate of the forums about having to press space bar each time you jump. I thought that hate was silly. I associate games that will allow you to hold space to jump continually as lazily coded, and it just doesn't feel right. Requiring a button press for each jump seemed more natural, and it fit well with the critical hits from attacking while in the air.... Now its just too easy. I can't believe people complained so bad about this one and made Notch change things back.

Veeery interesting. So it looks like Endermen don't burn in the daylight anymore, they just become very, very reclusive, using their teleport power to run away. Also, they seem to bit a bit more jumpy now, during combat, teleporting a lot more.
Edit: Ok, so according to the Wiki, they still burn, just teleport whenever they get hurt by something other than you directly. Huh. I liked my interpretation better.

So I just read notch's blog: apparently all current development will end on october 18th so that they can concentrate on bug fixes and optimization for the month leading up to the release. so 1.9 will probably be seen out for the 17th, and then a nice stability and optimization update during november.
2.0 seems like its gonna be a pretty sweet game. Since I am an alpha adopter and getting free expansions for the rest of time, I wonder where else notch is going with his game?

Notch has mentioned a 1.10 (Yes, that's right) before launch, and there's still a lot more planned content to add to the game that doesn't appear to be in 1.9. I'd guess (and hope) that alchemy, skills, quests and the fleshing out of strongholds will all be in 1.10.
Also, does anyone else a bit freaked out by music disk 11?
I would agree, but history has shown us that whenever Notch adds in something from a mod he does it in the most ass way possible, taking months to patch in something that's 10% of the original mod that took far less time for the modder to develop.
What the game needs is notch to actually give modders access to the unencrypted code like he said he was going to do so long ago.

That'll more than likely happen when it goes gold. Given that gold should be the most stable and "ready" version available.
