My 15-year old daughter had a kitchen accident last night. She had boiled some eggs, and spilled the water on herself shortly after the heat was tuned off. She jerked her clothes off as fast as she could right after, and we got her into the tub and poured cold water over her for a while to cool down her skin and manage her pain.
She suffered burns to her neck, chest, legs and feet. The burns were worst on her feet and right knee, where the skin blistered and peeled. Yeah, 2nd degree in those spots. I was scared for her, afraid she might need surgery, and also worried about the costs of care since my wife lost her job about 3 weeks ago and I haven't gotten insured through mine yet.
Anyway, after she was comfortable enough for transport (basically able to get OUT of the tub) my wife and her friend Adam rushed her to the ER. They gave her morphine for the pain and after a couple hours got her up to the burn unit. They evaluated her there, 1st and 2nd degree burns over 14% of her body. They debrided her burns, medicated and dressed them, and put her in the PICU on IV fluids, with regular doses of morphine, plus adavan to help her relax and rest.
The re-evaluated her today after I got myself excused from work and went to the hospital. She's doing very well. No spots were worse than 2nd degree, they expect she'll heal fine with no scarring. The burn surgeon was very pleased with her condition, and she won't require any grafts. She should be able to come home tomorrow. In fact, she did her own debridement in the therapy tub today, and she is so easy to get along with they love her in PICU.
It could have been so much worse. She's tough and she's strong, but it was terrifying for me, because there was so little I could do besides talk to her and douse her with cool water until she was ready to go to the hospital. Words can't express my relief.

... Holy crap, I cringed when I saw the thread title with no 'lol aren't kids cute' subtitle, and my stomach fell out through my feet when I started reading.
I'm relieved things aren't the worst, even though I've never met you personally or even knew your daughter existed til now.
I hope to whatever may or may not exist that everything after this goes well.

Wow. Glad everything's okay.
Did she trip or did the pot slip out of her hand?
<- has lightly scalded himself a couple of times.

There is no nightmare for a parent worse than our children in pain.
I'm very glad she's okay, Corvus. 2nd degrees heal up pretty nice in my experience, though she's probably going to get some really fun happy pills for a little while.

I can't imagine how terrifying that would have been. Thank goodness you guys reacted so well and got her in the bath, and that she's going to be okay.

Glad to hear she's okay, people assume too much that weird household accidents like that won't happen to them.

Pretty much the same thing happened to me when I was around her age, except it was pasta salad mix and I didn't burn nearly as much of myself. Glad to hear it wasn't as serious as burns go, but yeah. Just ban her from the kitchen for a year or so.

For me it was the fact that my grandpa told me not to touch the wood stove without explaining why not. I was about 3.
Even at that age, I'd follow rules completely if I understood them. Just being told "don't", on the other hand, usually made me investigate to find out why not.

I'm very glad your daughter's all right. I think all parents should know basic first aid so they know what to do in situaltions like that.

Wow, Corvus, really glad to hear she's okay, that would be really scary, I imagine! That's a smart kid though if she knew enough to know to get the clothes off right away and get in the tub. A lot of people don't realize that burns get so much worse simply because they keep their soaked and burning clothes on and burning them. Especially in a situation like that, most people would not have had the presence of mind to take the appropriate steps.
So even moreso, I'm glad the doctors think she'll be fine. She was smart, did the right thing, and it's good to know that it will pay her off.

Hope she gets better soon.

glad to hear everything's okay. I know a kid who did the same thing, and his entire shoulder and left arm are covered in scar tissue.
here's hoping she recovers without any permanent or lasting effects.

You know, Cassandra Peterson has burns on her body where pot of scalding water accidentally fell on her as a little girl. All the places the Elvira costume covers are the places she has them. These days, she doesn't bother to specifically hide them; she's comfortable in her own skin, scars and all.
Glad your little girl's okay.

Glad everything is ok and hope your daughter has a speedy recovery. Espically since that could have been worse and I do understand were your coming from since a similair instance had to my estrange brother when he was nine had to be send to the hospital. His burns weren't as bad as your daughter but still that is a very scary thing to go through.

Thanks again all. I appreciate all the well-wishers.
She's home now, doing well. She's going to be recovering for about 2 weeks, although if she's healing well and feels up to it, she can return to school before then.

I'm so thankful when i finally worked up the nerve to read this Corvus that she's okay and getting better... and that it was water and not oil ... I've got nothing but the deepest respect for you two for raising a kid smart and strong enough to work through the initial pain and shock to keep the accident from getting worse.
a lot of adults can't do that much for themselves.
I hate stove tops.
In the right light I can still see the scar left in my right hand from when i was four and thought I needed a candy from on top of the refrigerator. Enterprising as I was, lol I proceeded to open the pots drawer on the oven and place my hand directly on the element of the range as I was climbing up the stove to get to the side of the fridge.
1st of only 2 spankings I ever got as a kid. and a constant shinny reminder every time i move my thumb.
again so happy it wasn't worse and is already getting better.

Man thats scary... Everytime we have our Nephews for the Weekend, I fear something like this, my 6 year old nephew will just not leave the stove area alone, which reminds me to talk to my brother in law about that....
I am so glad your daughter is doing well, stuff like this does freak me out the most just scary stuff.

Glad to hear there were no serious injuries. Also good to see parents that reacted calmly and correctly in a panic situation. The cool bath was a very very good idea.
