Full Version: If Transformers had human military rank, how would you rank then?

Optimus Prime 23
What would be their American military rank equivalent?

Here's a few of my guesses, using Army ranks:

Optimus Prime - 5-star General (during wartime, a ranking of 5-star General is reserved for General of the Army)
Ultra Magnus - full-bird Colonel
Prowl - Major or Lt. Colonel
Jazz - Captain
Grimlock - Captain
Ratchet - Captain, as medics are officers
Hot Rod - 2nd Lt.
Ironhide - Sgt. Major
Kup - Sgt. Major

Megatron - 5-star General, same as Prime
Starscream - full-bird Colonel
Shockwave - full-bird Colonel
Soundwave - Lt. Colonel

Your take?

It'd definitely vary between continuity. Generally, however, Optimus Prime would be the undisputed leader of the Autobot military and, if not the commander-in-chief or five-star general, then definitely a four-star. The obvious exceptions would be Animated or Beast Wars - there, the respective Optimus figures were more like the commanders of a scouting vessel (possibly a Naval commander or Army major or lt. colonel), with other figures being the commander-in-chief (Ultra Magnus and the Maximal Elders, respectively).

IDW, however, had clear signs of a ranking system under Furman. Optimus was the undisputed head, with individual unit commanders having equivalent ranks (Prowl, Hot Rod, Springer, Hound, Grimlock, possibly Bluestreak and Repugnus) and there being some tiers of management between them (Silverbolt was in command of the Autobot Hub when Prime was away, for instance) and independent officers within the military (Ultra Magnus). We never got a firm idea of the ranking system, however...which sucks.

Sadly, the best we've got for a firm ranking system is with the individual tech specs. And seeing as a few guys don't have published ones...oy...

We had a discussion going on in this thread here awhile back. It was more specific to Animated which offered the most opportunities to have multiple ranks within the organization.

Ratchet - Captain, as medics are officers

I actually have something on my comp about this since I fiddled around with the idea for fanfics. I go by USMC ranks since that's what I'm familiar with myself (I was an NCO). For Beast Wars...

Officers, Maximal
Optimus Primal- An O-3 Captain, barely. It seems the Axalon was his first solo deployment and he's a brand new commander (Rattrap even points this out). He's reeks of that 'just out of the Academy' bearing.
Rhinox- W-1 Warrant Officer (field specialist) for security systems engineering. Not really a unit officer, but does provide command in his field of speciality. Might be why he never took command of the Maximal unit himself when Primal was dead or absent.

Officers, Predacon
TriPredacus Council- O-8 or O-9s. A powerful part of the Predacon Alliance. They do refer to themselves as Generals and maybe they're the top guys in whatever's left of the Predacon military structure. Or maybe they're just in charge of one military unit (ie: warships) and there are other Generals of equal or greater ranks in charge of other units. Given the different specialities in Transformers' warfare, this seems the most likely.
Megatron- He's a "field commander" in one bio of him, so I'd guess he was an 0-5 Lt. Colonel in the Pred army. Depending on how many enemies he made, he might've been held back from advancing. Also, he seems to fall under the command of the TriPred Council since they know him well ("brilliant, but a rogue").
Tarantulas- We know he's a lt. in the Predacon secret police forces. Probably O-2.
Scorponok- he was second-in-command, but that could have been a field promotion by Megatron for their specific unit. I picture him more as an E-3/E-4, really.
Inferno- given a "sub commander" field promotion by season three. Obviously this means nothing in the actual rank structure of the Predacons overall, but to Megatron's unit he's officially a Lt.

Enlisted / NCOs, Maximal
Depth Charge- E-8 First Sergeant. I always wondered if the symbols on the front of his wings were his rank insignia... it seems to be a sort of chevron with 3 stripes. Anyway, he was in charge of security for an entire colony so he's high, probably a senior enlisted, assisting the officers with making decisions and in charge of the personnel and administration. This also makes sense in the power dynamic between him and Primal as DC has much more field experience, but since Primal is an officer, he technically has to answer to him. He even gives him a nasty little salute in 'Deep Metal.'

IDK if the rest of the Maximals really had ranks. They want to have a vote about electing a leader, so there's not really a chain of command until Optimus makes Rattrap his 2nd.

Enlisted / NCOs, Predacon
Dinobot- I see him as enlisted and definitely not an officer. After all, he wants to advance in the ranks through force, not politics. Maybe E-6 or E-7. He also has no respect for command by appointment and challenges... well, everyone at some point.
Ravage- Hard to say since he went on a solo mission and therefore doesn't seem to have his own unit. OTOH, he answers directly to the Generals.

The rest of the Predacons in the show are just grunts, though they always seem to expect some sort of "reward" for doing well which could be in the form of a field promotion. In fact the ones that show loyalty to Megatron are generally given acknowledgment in the form of rank.

Depends of continuity. In IDW I'd say Optimus Prime is hands down the commander-in-chief much like the president or a 5-star general. Prowl would be his chief of staff, and then, things get blurry. Well they already were. I'll go back to Prowl, he'd probably rank as something like a colonel or brigadier general but as Prime's right hand man he has more power then he would otherwise. Whereas someone like Magnus might be a 4-star general (If he weren't a Peacekeeping agent, right?). Grimlock, Springer and Jazz would be something like lieutenant colonels.

I'm not sure about the Decepticons, they seem even blurrier in rank structure.

Hmmm, if you based it purely off Army ranks and assign them based of their rank scores from the tech specs it would be something like.....

Optimus Prime: General of the Army (5-star)
Prowl: General (4- star)
Grimlock: general
Ultra Magnus: General
Jazz: Lieutenant General (3 -star)
Ironhide: Major General (2 -star)
Bumblebee: Major General (2 -star)
Cosmos: Brigadier General
Targetmaster Hot Rod: Colonel
Slag: Lieutenant Colonel

This could get a lot more complicated if you added commissioned and non-commissioned ranks. Somebody didn't think this rank business through when doing tech specs btw. Does anybody have under a 4?

Dunno about tech specs, but going by the cartoon that seems close. I'd have to bump Ratchet up as well. As head of the medical corps, he'd likely be O-6 or above as well.

I think Hot Rod and Bumblebee would likely slip lower.
