S-Stop! Thief!
I picked this up yesterday.

It's a short novel by Joe Schreiber, who from what I gather is more of a horror author. It's odd though, the characters felt like shallow cut-outs, you have the crusty old sadist of a prison guard, two young brother inmates, the sexy Doctor lady.... It's just so cliche.

The zombies themselves don't actually show up for quite a bit, and the author does a good job into baiting you into expecting zombies every time you turn a page only to not find any. I'm not sure if this will piss others off, but I liked the affect.

The whole novel changes though when

HIGHLIGHT to view:
Han Solo and Chewbacca show up, and the best way to describe it is it becomes Star Warsy. Is this because I'm just so used to these Characters being Star Wars and can't see them in any other light? Most likely, but I still think the tone changes a bit to one of hope.

But yeah, it's short, not exactly intelligent, and a little gory. But it's fun, in a "I've been all across the Galaxy and seen a lot of strange things" way. In a way, it almost feels like those older standalone Star Wars comics that focus on an original cast and play up these sorts of things.

So yeah, Death Troopers.

Awesome cover.

I'm a big fan of the Star Wars novels, and usually wind up with most all of them eventually.

Thus far, I've chosen to skip this one. After your review, it sounds like that's a good choice.

Same here. They tried doing a Goosebumps ripoff years ago called "Galaxy of Fear" where two Alderannian kids and their shape changing "Uncle" traveled the galaxy and always winding up in a "scary" situation that would always involve a main character or popular background character. I never really got into that and Death Troopers really doesn't grab me as more than an attempt to cash in on a less explored genre of Sci-Fi/Fantasy than they normally do. Sadly theres a prequel novel coming out in a year already.

I remember Galaxy of Fear. It wasn't terrible, but they were very Goosebumpsy.

Although the book with the Eppon thing creeped the crap out of me.
Prime 2.0
I was all for the book, untill the part you spoiler'd happened.

Are all star wars novels like that? Great story Good buildup then they turn around and throw stroke the fans with a character we all know and love? Is the galaxy far far away so small that every single story in ti is gonna involve the same characters?
This story would have been perfectly fine with the nobodies it started off with.

But iam not giving up on it, i'll read through the rest, and hope that it picks back up.

S-Stop! Thief!
I dunno, Prime 2.0. I felt like once it happened, the story changed from what I was expecting it would be into something more interesting. I guess we just have different expectations.

The cover of Death Troopers caught my attention and it's definitely something I'll pick up once it hits paperback. Which is remarkable, since my sole other Star Wars novel is "The Crystal Star".

My main problem is that now i know who's gonna live. I mean one of the main focus in a zombie story is who's going to live and who's going to try to nibble on the survivors.
Knowing that 1/3 of the survivors are goign to make it out alive kinda kills the whole suspense factor.
Now iam just reading to see how everyone else dies.

Zombies are the new vampires.

When zombies are sparkly, then we can worry.

I just reserved this book at the local library. I really want to read this book! icon-fire.gif

We only got the first 6 Galaxy of Fear books here, the ones covering Project Starscream (lulz). Only thing I bought from Skywalkers, the official UK Junior Star Wars Fan Club (membership of which lasted one year, which no option to renew...wow). Definetly agree they were basically 'Goosebumps in the future'. Seriously, the story felt like it was set more in the future than set in the Star Wars universe. Throwing in established characters and having the main character want to be a Jedi didn't really change that. I think what bugged me most was the shapeshifting Uncle. It seemed really inconsistent with Star Wars, especially since he could change into ANYTHING. Go back to DS9, Odo...

Prime 2.0 = You would be looking for Republic Commando/Imperial Commando icon-arcee.gif

I'm thinking of getting this in paperback. I've heard it's good for those who like horror-style stories. I have heard mixed reviews on the appearance of major characters, with some people finding them to be a link to the greater universe and others considering them to be just tossed in for name-dropping's sake. I'd like to read it, but as it's a shorter tale and I'm tight on cash, it doesnt' seem smart for me to spend that money on a hardcover when I can get the whole thing cheaper next year, or take it out of the library.

Yeah i thumbed through a couple of them and they were pretty awesome. But the whole language barrier kinda kept me me from fully enjoying the book. Too much mandalore for my taste.

Concerning those Major characters, I personally found that the book picked up and became more of a true tale then just cliche zombiefest. I think it's because *character 1* and *character 2* are both perfect fits for this scenario, and it really seems like something they'd get up to.
