Who else is looking forward to this? I'm not officially waiting in any lines tonight to get it, but I don't have any plans, so I may head to one of the stores at midnight and pickup a copy.
Bass X0
I have to wait until next Friday but I've already pre-ordered it online and should recieve it Friday morning.
Tm_Silverclaw
I've been playing it.

Amazing game, It really feels like someone has played SMB3 and SMBW right before making this game. I'm serious.. it feels just like it.

And don't worry.. it's a Singleplayer game first... Multi-player second.
The Predaking
I have it pre-ordered from Amazon. Should be here on Wednesday.

That makes me happy then! New SMB for the DS just didn't "Feel" like a SMB game, there was something off about it.

Sweet i knew it was coming soon this means 2 things.
1: I have a reason to dust off and play my wii again
2: I'll have a ton of pissed off parents here in about month in the store when little Billy Dumb ass can't get his effing Mario game from Santa.
Its good and bad....I'm so torn
Jesse (M_P)
played it for about an hour last night after I got it, and a couple of hours this morning, and this IS a Mario game. I don't know what New SMB was on the DS, but it wasn't Mario. Just like TM_Silverclaw said, they must have played SMB3 before/during the development of this game.
Zedoben
Great game so far. Just got to the mid-world fortress on world three. Missing a LOT of big coins, but I'll track em down eventually.

Liked the nod to castle 4-4 at the end of world 2.
Cabal
I picked it up today since TRU had a deal where if you buy two $40+ games, you save $20.
Ironbite
Anybody remember the whole hoopla with the fact that the game will play itself for you? Yeah it turjns out you have to die 8 times for that option to be activated.

Ironbite-much ado about nothing eh?

Is that per stage or for the entire game?
Ironbite
Per stage I believe

Had the game on reserve for my wife. Side scrollers are all she can really play.

That said, she's having a blast. I haven't had the time to check it out yet, but I'm sure it's fun.
LBD "Nytetrayn"
I thought that Super Guide info was old news by now.

Anyway, got it earlier today, plus the NSMBWii 500 Nintendo Point card from EB Games earlier, and the wife and I have played through two worlds already. Lots of fun.

I wouldn't say NSMB on DS isn't Mario. By comparison, I'd really say it's more like SMB to NSMBWii's SMB3/World. Skills learned in that game have definitely come in handy here so far. And it's still one of my favorite DS games and Mario games.

Meh. I'm not very impressed with this game. Maybe I built it up too much. My main concerns are the poor graphics and hugging intolerrable waggle jive. Replace the spin with a button and allow me to pick up with the B button and this game would be a billion times better.

The game really does play like a Mario game, I'll give it that, but the difficulty level seems a bit off. I collected like 25 lives in the first world only to lose half of them trying to play the second before deciding I'd rather play Fallout.

I think I've decided not to buy any more Wii games.
Zedoben
Eh, the graphics aren't poor. It's not really pushing the system, but it LOOKS Mario, and that's the big thing. Of course I look back on all the previous 2D Mario games and think they still look good, even in the days of 1080p displays and millions of colors.

I'll give you the pick up and spin mechanics, though. That should be button controlled, not motion controlled, but it's a minor point, at least for me. The rest of the game, level design wise and control/physics wise makes up for it.

As far as the difficulty goes, I'm glad they made it trickier. It's old school, as far as platformers go, and feels about right compared to the 8/16 bit Marios. I've died quite a bit, but still haven't had the SuperGuide block appear in any of the levels I've played(though I think the world 3 castle might do it. Not so much for the castle itself as much as having trouble timing my jumps during the fight with Lemmy at the end.)

I just think all those years of 2D sprite games look better than a 2D version with 3D character models in low res with tons of jaggies. I haven't been this unimpressed with a game's visuals since Mario Party 8.
Tm_Silverclaw
Except they don't have a lot of jaggies..... Unless you've got something seriously fed up on your set up.

But then again you can't hump the TV and scream "HD HD HD HD!" so you don't love it.

Yeah, I haven't noticed many jaggies at all. And personally, despite playing it on a 46" 1080p 120Hz set, I think the graphics still look pretty darn good. I've never expected hyper-realism from a Mario game (especially a side-scroller).
Tm_Silverclaw
Remember... Unless it's HD.. Despite being a solid game and actually well controled, or writen or anything.. It stinks! IT'S NOT HD! HD HD HD HD HD!

Totally has jaggeis and there's nothing wrong with my "set up". Some things look fine (pipes, backgrounds ...) but there are always jaggies on or around Mario, or around sharp contrast things like a dark thing on a light background.

No offense but you opened this can of worms on yourself aDam. Mentioning poor graphics in your first post... you should know by now that the Wii lovers will defend their territory despite any graphic deficiency. But seriously there is a thing as being too picky. Are you not gonna play the original Super Mario if you had to play the original version again?

Well, the other side is, the graphics really aren't poor. They're fine, but they're not HD, and that's the root of his demonstrated dislike for Wii games.

Plus, the game really is fun, and if you like SMB3/SMW, maybe save for the motion controls(which I think are fine), you'll likely enjoy this game. But if more effort is spent looking for jaggies then enjoying the game...
The Predaking
Man, I can't wait for my copy to get here.

Everyone just chill out a bit.

Personally, I never understood why extra features like HD, when missing, somehow mean a thing "sucks." If XBox games started coming with free chocolates, would all Nintendo games suddenly be terrible if they didn't? While I may prefer HD (or chocolate!), I'm not going to hold it against them for not having it. It is what it is, and I knew that going in.

I actually didn't realize the new SMB game was coming out this soon. It'll probably be an xmas thing for me.

And I'm not sure what the complaints are about the DS game. I thought it was quite good as a new Mario game. The item storage was a nice touch, the game looked and felt right. Added enough new things, but called back enough things. The only downside is that there were just SO MANY alternate exits to levels, but that's really no different than how Super Mario World was, so even though I dislike it, I realize that it's part of those games. What other complaints might there have been?
Jealous Beauty
I'm actually interested in this game, but I have to agree with aDam that the Wii's graphics are far from impressive after being spoiled by my Xbox 360 for so long. Has Nintendo made any strides in smoothing out the crude appearance of their Wii games since RE4 and Zelda? If so, I'm in. If not, I'll have to pass too.

Sorry, but graphics are a HUGE deal for me.
Galenraff
With the component cables, it looks pretty darn good on my HDTV in 480e (or whatever it is that the "upscaled" setting is on the Wii or whatever.

Nintendo's graphics aren't as good as XBox's and I'm not claiming they are. But I think they look good, and won't hold not having HD against them as long as the games are still fun.

Hell, Burgertime is one of the best games ever made, and that's not HD either. icon-waspy.gif
Tornadron
The bigger issue on wii visuals should be taken with graphic quality not screen resolution.
This ones on my christmas list, I loved the DS game though find it baffling this wasn't on the DS.

I BOUGHT the game I'M PLAYING the game AND I presented many other reasons for which I'm annoyed with it. What do you need to stop being wrong?

QUOTE

You're so hugging absolute it's unbelievable. It's not "like" and "don't like". Would I like it MORE if there was no waggle? Absolutely. Would I like it MORE if there were better graphics? Absolutely. Would I like it MORE if Peach or a red toad of Wario or Birdo were the other player character instead of blue and yellow Toad? Absolutely. It's a hugging spectrum you <term removed to avoid getting banned again> and I am disappointed with this game for a number of reasons, and if the graphics were better I would still be disappointed by the other mountain of reasons mentioned.

I may have opened the can, but I didn't put the worms in.

I play the original Super Mario Bros. all the time. I still have my NES set up to my TV, played it to death on all stars, GBC and GBA, as I have with Mario 2, 3 and World, some of my all time favourite, timeless games. This game is less enjoyable to me than playing those old games. Quite to the contrary, why should I play this one, when I prefer 2D sprites to 2.5D?

This is actually my main concern, despite the HD strawman that has been presented time and time again in this thread. If I put my PS3 on 480p, it will look better than this game.
Asquian
It's a fun game. If you're in it for the gameplay, I'd say get it. If you're in it for the hd graphics, I'd say pass.
It's Walky!

Hardware couldn't handle the needs of multiplayer, apparently.

I've been enjoying it with my wife, and the difficulty hasn't been too much to overcome. We're at World 6, and we've been playing around two worlds a day since Sunday.

Graphics look just fine on my TV.

Esser-Z
Man, how can you complain about difficulty in a Mario game? It's called Nintendo Hard for a reason!
Axaday
My sister and I played last night and loved it. It is mostly Super Mario Bros 3, with bits of Super Mario Bros 2 and Super Mario World thrown in. I wouldn't recognize anything from a later game.

The simulaneous play took some getting used to and we went through a few stages that will be terrible when my brother and his girlfriend come for Christmas. It's handy having a helper, but it is tough to take care of them and stay out of each other's way in a tight spot.

I'd love a full-fledged Zelda game that looked like Zelda 3 with simultaneous multiplayer like this.
Korcas
So, is this game as short as the DS version, or does it actually offer more?
The Predaking
Mine came in last night, but due to time restraints, I didn't get a chance to play it. icon-screamer.gif I'll fire it up tonight though. Heck, I bought component cables just to play this game, so I am hoping for no jaggies in 480p.

Bit longer. It has a 9th world, after all.

It also has a larger variety of bosses.(Fighting each Koopaling twice beats fighting fake Bowser and Bowser Jr. 7 times each)
The Predaking
Okay, I got to play a little bit last night, and it was a blast! I only got through the first half of level 1, but it was so totally awesome to be playing 2D Mario on the TV again. It plays pretty well, although it took me a minute to figure out how to make an emergency Yoshi separation jump.

Love that the Koopa kids are back, as they were awesome in SMB3. When they came in on the cake, I about went crazy, as I had no idea that they were coming back. I guess that is what I get for not looking at the reviews, but I was sold at 2D Mario with 4 player co-op.

The graphics look okay when using the Component cables, granted its not breath taking, but it's pretty good for Mario.

Bottom line, 2D Mario is back with a vengeance! If you have a Wii, then you must get this game! Old school gamers will not be disappointed.
Creature SH
My guess as to why this is on Wii:

Wii can use more good titles.

The end.

If you liked the first half of world 1 that much just wait till you get to the later worlds. I have to give kudos to the level designers. They understand what made the 8/16 bit Marios so good.
Might Gaine
I gotta say I'm pretty disappointed with the game. Maybe I'm just spoiled by Mario Galaxy, or maybe it's the fact that Mario 3--which this is heavily based on--is my least favorite Mario, but I'm just not having much fun playing this game. And so much of this is recycled from the old games, it just doesn't feel new and interesting. Sometimes it feels like I might just as well be playing a rom hack of one of the NES/SNES Mario games...
Zedoben
It doesn't really push any new ground, so in that respect, you're right, Might Gaine. The level design DOES stick closely to traditional 2d Mario themes, with a few added tricks allowed by newer hardware. Definitely nothing as innovative as Super Mario Galaxy's gravity mechanics.

At least you have Super Mario Galaxy 2 to look forward to.

I have to agree there. And I felt the same about New Super Mario Bros DS – here we had, have, potential for an awesome-looking modern 2D game, and we got something that looks visually stunted by having scrappy 2.5D graphics rather than polished 2D graphics.

Think back to Yoshi's Island. Have we ever seen anything as beautiful and 'artistic' in 2.5D? Unfortunately not.

How DARE you care for graphics!?

We have had a couple of beautiful 2.5D games, they just didn't end up on Nintendo systems. Look at PSP's Megaman Powered up, and Maverick Hunter X, and even though it's a crappy game, Megaman X8 did the visuals really well, too. I haven't played this game yet, so I dunno if the jaggies are really that much of a problem, but I didn't MIND the DS version, for the DS' 3D capabilities it looked acceptable.
Zedoben
Unfortunately, if you want polished 2d sprites on the wii, you will probably have to go to 2nd or 3rd party titles(Murumasa and A Boy & His Blob are rather beautiful 2d side-scrollers). If only Nintendo would hire the art team from the Mario & Luigi series and have EAD design the gameplay.

I guess you'll be waiting a couple years barring a retailer initiative but given most retailers still sell twilight princess for 50 new, it'll be a while. First party nintendo rarely reduces in price in any reasonable time
