Activision today officially announced or confirmed information for a wide range of products with the Hero moniker, including Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero, DJ Hero, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and Guitar Hero: Greatest Hits, which is known as Guitar Hero: Smash Hits in North America. The biggest news is that Guitar Hero 5 was also officially revealed, though no specific details except for the release window were mentioned.

Guitar Hero 5 is expected to follow the formula of Guitar Hero, World Tour which was released last year on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, Wii, and PC to positive reviews. It will offer an "unprecedented level of control over the way they play the game with the ability to drop in and out of songs and change band members, instruments, and difficulty levels on the fly," according to the megapublisher.

The long-rumored Band Hero was also confirmed. Instead of featuring nonrock instruments, the game will instead be an all-ages, family-friendly entry in the series, and the first game in the franchise to bear an E10+ rating from the ESRB. No details were given other than that the game will feature "top-40 hits designed to expand the appeal to a broad family audience who can play together on the guitar, drums, bass, and microphone."

The previously confirmed DJ Hero also got a mention. Swapping pubs for clubs, the new instalment will feature songs spanning hip-hop, R&B, Motown, electronic, and "dance" genres. Rather than creating songs from scratch, DJ Hero will let players produce "original mixes of popular songs and music from the world's most exciting artists and DJs."

Several publicity images of the DJ Hero Turntable Controller were unveiled with the announcement. The deck features green, red, and blue buttons akin to those found on Guitar Hero instruments, with the middle button noticeably larger than the other two. DJ Hero is heading to the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3 and/or PlayStation 2.

Although Prince may have knocked back the franchise's advances, Activision's Will Kassoy officially confirmed the existence of Guitar Hero: Van Halen earlier this week at a press event. Kassoy promised that the game will feature "many of the band's greatest hits," although it is still unclear which platforms it will appear on.

So "Band Hero" eh? I hope they get sued for that one because it WILL cause even more market confusion than just Rock Ban and Guitar Hero.

The naming of these games is about as good as the quality of the actual game we will probably be getting.

I despise Activison.

They would bleed an entire breed of rare elephants dry if only to make a quick buck.

The rate that they're making these games is almost up to par with the rate of shovelware on the Wii. That's right, Guitar Hero has become shovelware.
son of unicron
i gave up after guitar hero 3

these games are fun.. but im just so sick of playing them.
wonko the sane?
I payed so damn much for rockband 2... and I've played it like twice since we got it. There is ZERO inspiration to get up and play.

I kinda hope these games fail just to prove a point to activision about quality.

But... Rock Band 2 IS a good quality game. It's the Activision ones that aren't.
wonko the sane?
I know. The gendre has been over done. Rock band 2 was the only one I paid for, but since then I've played GH3, Areosmith, metallica, downloaded content...

too much crap, way too fast, is what I'm trying to say.
PiratedTVPro
I'm sticking with Rock Band 2. The only music rhythm game I plan on buying
this year is Beatles Rock Band. Okay, maybe Lego Rock band if the music is
exportable to RB2.
ChessPieceFace
Well, yeah, there's definitely too many games coming out.

That's why I'm glad I picked my platform (Rock Band) and stuck with it. The Hero games, I'll check out the demos, maybe pick 'em up on heavy clearance (Aerosmith for 10 with a free X-Plorer guitar was nice), but I won't buy DLC, won't buy the games for regular price, and won't really pay that much attention. Since Lego and Beatles are kind of off the RB platform, I'll probably treat them similarly, though they're certainly more interesting extensions of the brand than GH5 or BH or GH Smash Hits or whatever.

Anyway, RB2 still gets a lot of play from me, and friends always ask about coming over and playing it. Plus there's at least a couple of new songs a month I want to buy, and I've still got goals to reach so it stays fresh for me.
Spin-Out
... Maybe DJ Hero will feature a song by Peacey P.
Confuzor
I had all but mentally shut out the Hero era of games, till This year's E3 mentioned that Dire Straits and Peter Frampton would be featured in GH5. If they are genuinely the games I've seeked since GH1 (Sultans of Swing & Do You Feel Like We Do respectively) then I will be forced to buy that game.

I hope the World Tour DLC of The Touch works on it...

I ended up getting the $100 Guitar Hero 3 bundle a few months back thinking I'd totally love this concept. Turns out I'm one of those people who prefer sucking at a real instrument. :/

I never actually played the guitar. I was always on wind instruments. Clarinet and the like. Which translated nicely to being able to play the recorder once I had to give up the clarinet and not be able to afford my own.

There's your problem right there.

I am so getting Guitar Hero Smash Hits when it comes out Wednesday. And Guitar Hero 5 and Van Halen look good. Will get those.
Daith
I demand Trumpet Hero! Yes give me a trumpet game where I don't have to buzz.
spikeriley
Just read some news on Gamespot. Guitar Hero: Van Halen will not have Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony. it will only have the four current bandmembers.
spikeriley
DJ Hero news:

Grandmaster Flash is gonna be a playable avatar. He has also contributed two mixes for the game.

And better yet, this will have a "DJ Vs Guitar" Mode. That's right, DJ Hero vs Guitar Hero. ten of the songs in the game will be remixed to support Guitar controllers that will be compatible.
The Predaking
Is Jazzy Jeff going to be on it?
blackman
I want one of these games to come with an organ and psychedelic drugs and alcohol and a stoned groupie and it'd be called "Guitar Hero: The Doors"

Or alternatively a broken microphone stand and AIDS and it'd be called "Guitar Hero: Queen" I'd buy the jive put of any of those two.

Didn't say. Either he's not in or they are planing to have him, but haven't officially confirmed it.

Grandmaster Flash wil also have a cameo in the game's tutorial mode.
Self-Destruct
Good god, more of these? There is no game of this type that Activation could make that I would play.

.........Except one.

Hahahaha. that a good parody right there.

Bumping this to say that Carlos Santana is in Guitar Hero 5. The soundtrack will also get a live recording of his song "No One To Depend On".
Cheetimus Primal
STOP IT NOW, DAMMIT!!!
http://www.destructoid.com/band-hero-for-d...ip-141090.phtml

Come on, EA/Harmonix. Sue the balls out of Activision already! Their stupid Band Hero sign already has the customers in m store confused as to why Rock Band has joined forces with Guitar Hero. After they get past that they wonder why the game even exists.

In the end though I really hope Activision gets burned with all this crap they're putting out. They are really oversaturating the market.
The Predaking
Who wants to play GH or RB on the DS?
Cheetimus Primal
you won't be playing Rock Band on the DS because they aren't insane whores.
Unless they can figue out a way to do it well.
ChessPieceFace
Yeah, I don't understand what "Band Hero" is supposed to mean. How does that communicate that it's any different from GHWT or GH5? If it had been used for GHWT, that would've made sense. Now, it's just weird.

From the tracklist so far, it seems like "Pop Hero" would be more appropriate.
Cheetimus Primal
I guarantee it's meant entirely to confuse people. That's why I want them sued. They're getting too pompous for their own good.
Liege
So tired of these games.

That said, I would love a Guitar Hero: Ramones.

Or they could just release more songs online icon-primal.gif .

I doubt anyone will be crazy enough to sue them for the use of the name Band Hero though. Activision Blizzard is a money making machine and I doubt anyone would risk suing them and their tribe of lawyers.
spikeriley
I think they chose the name Band Hero because they are seperating it from Guitar Hero for what it is, a family-friendly version of Guitar Hero. They probably won't get sued because of the name.

And the DS Drum Kit looks sweet to me.
God Fire Ginrai
GH: Metallica drove down the price of GH: Aerosmith, so I bought it for $20.

I'm sure this onslaught of new GH games will drive the price of GH: Metallica, so I'll buy it then.

I'll also get GH: Van Halen at a reasonable price someday.

This concept is just being beaten to death.
TheMightyMollusk
I burned out after GH3. I have World Tour for the Wii and have barely played it (hell, I could only tell you maybe four songs that're on it). I kinda feel bad about not playing it more, it being a gift from the in-laws last christmas and all (especially considering they weren't technically in-laws until last month), but I just have no motivation to play it anymore.
son of unicron
yeah, im glad the guitar game fad seems to be dying.

it was fun for a while.. but.. eh, let it die. im so tired of playing these games at every party/ get together i go to. it feels like a chore
Cheetimus Primal
It's not dying down, that's the problem. People are still hungry for this stuff.

I just wish it were more evenly paced like Rock Band. They have all of three games out with a forth on the way. Add n track packs for those with no internet and you have a healthy franchise.
The Hero stuff is just too damn much. Everytime you turn around there's more Hero crap being squeezed out.
Bocc Kob
Nuts to these games, I have Wii Music!

One of these days, I may actually take the plastic off it.
Murry the Evil Skull
Band Hero is really sketchy. I dunno if they can sue over it but it definately seems like they are trying to confuse the consumers.

I used to like GH, but honestly all the damn different versions of the gme has burned me. At least with rockband you can get 1 or 2 and have access to all the DLC songs. Meanwhile with GH you gotta swap between different games to play different DLC, its all over the place. Then they just keep making more and more... Eh.. Honestly Im not even sure RB2 was nessary. I liked the idea of 1 game as a platform and just kinda building off it. RB is starting to stray from that too so i guess neither one of them is really getting the point. Then again with the slew of GH games on the shelves RB prolly feels like it needs more presence lest it get pushed off because its an older game.
Cheetimus Primal
I think they probably used RB2 to not just make money but improve whatever technical stuff they could. I seem to recall reading about that somewhere but I'm a lazy bastard right now so I ain't lookin' up jive. RBU was most certainly Harmonix using their newfound fame to release a version of one of their old classics which I am very grateful for because I freakin' LOVED Amplitude!
RB Beatles is honestly an opportunity you'd have to be a fool to pass up on. And you can tell that a lot more work is going into that than all the GH band games.

So yeah, Harmonix may be in it for the money like everyone else but you can see the love they put into it as well. GH is just Activision doing what the do best.

well, i guess i should say im glad it seems to be losing steam with my circle of friends. it used to be it was hard to get through a weekend without playing these games. now... i dont remember the last time i played.

Ok. I sincerely hope you enjoy this game as much as you seem to want to. I know I won't bother touching it. I've given the other post-Harmonix GH games a try and found that they were too easy and/or not fun at all. I didn't even enjoy looking at them as the graphics and style are simply more appealing on RB.
GH lacks the heart RB has. For that reason alone I dislike Activision.

But tell me this: Why are they releasing two more games when they could have just pumped out the DLC?
Lord know I sure as hell ain't lookin' forward to a bunch of Band Hero sets clogging up my store for the next two years alongside the GH:WT sets we can't get rid of even after taking $100 off the price.
Apostrophe
I counted about 49 songs on that list that I would look forward to playing. I'd much rather they all come out for Rock Band as I gave World Tour a rental last week and was not impressed with the gameplay at all. But with that many songs I like coming out I'll have to at least give it a rental.
PiratedTVPro
... and the exact time that the Guitar Hero franchise died was 11:04am on Friday, July 31st.

http://kotaku.com/5326901/guitar-hero-5-ge...-avatar-support

EDIT: ... and I'm pretty sure this would mean the "INSANE" feature for Guitar Hero 5 on the Wii that's been rumored to be revealed soon would be Mii support...
ChessPieceFace
So, it's an optional feature to import Avatars (and yes, probably Miis) as playable characters. How does that kill anything? If it replaced the create-a-rocker mode (which, granted, in GHWT NEEDED to be replaced), I'd see your point.

As for the setlist, it happens to be the same one Joystiq posted as a "rumor" earlier this month: http://www.allspark.com/forums/index.php?s...t&p=1276659
And again, I have to say, it's really freakin' good.
Apostrophe
I was actually thinking the other day that I was surprised that Guitar Hero hadn't said anything about offering avatar support yet. I probably won't use it but it doesn't hurt anything.
Murry the Evil Skull
I'm not exactly sure how i feel about this. one one hand I dont think the avatars really match the art style of the game and so they look odd up there on stage. On the other hand the idea of watching Master Cheif rock out amuses me slightly.

PiratedTVPro
QUOTE(ChessPieceFace @ Jul 31 2009, 12:33 PM) *
How does that kill anything?

Activision and RedOctane have seeminly done everything in their power to
water down the Guitar Hero brand name to the point where it means next
to nothing. One of the Rock Band designers had a very interesting GDC doc
where he talked about the driving single question behind Rock Band, and
that was "Does this add to the feeling of really being in a band?" Guitar Hero
is going so far in the other direction it seems ridiculous to me.

Neversoft is doing what they did with Tony Hawk, driving it into the ground
and diluting it until it means nothing.
ChessPieceFace
So Guitar Hero: Van Halen will also come out this year (12/22), and here's the tracklist already:

* "Ain't Talkin Bout Love"
* "And The Cradle Will Rock"
* "Atomic Punk"
* "Beautiful Girls"
* "Cathedral" (solo)
* "Dance The Night Away"
* "Eruption" (solo)
* "Everybody Wants Some"
* "Feel Your Love Tonight"
* "Hang 'Em High"
* "Hear About It Later"
* "Hot For Teacher"
* "Ice Cream Man"
* "I'm The One"
* "Jamie's Cryin"
* "Jump"
* "Little Guitars"
* "Loss Of Control"
* "Mean Street"
* "Panama"
* "Pretty Woman"
* "Romeo Delight"
* "Running With The Devil"
* "So This Is Love"
* "Somebody Get Me A Doctor"
* "Spanish Fly" (solo)
* "Unchained"
* "You Really Got Me"

Other Artists

* Alter Bridge - "Come To Life"
* Billy Idol - "White Wedding"
* blink-182 - "First Date"
* Deep Purple - "Space Truckin"
* Foo Fighters - "Best Of You"
* Foreigner - "Double Vision"
* Fountains of Wayne - "Stacy's Mom"
* Jimmy Eat World - "Pain"
* Judas Priest - "Painkiller"
* Killswitch Engage - "The End Of Heartache"
* Lenny Kravitz - "Rock And Roll Is Dead"
* Queen - "I Want It All"
* Queens of the Stone Age - "Sick, Sick, Sick"
* Tenacious D - "Master Exploder"
* The Clash - "Safe European Home"
* The Offspring - "Pretty Fly For A White Guy"
* Third Eye Blind - "Semi-Charmed Life"
* Weezer - "Dope Nose"
* Yellowcard - "The Takedown"

I'd buy Stacy's Mom, Pain, and Jump as Rock Band DLC. Otherwise, this isn't for me. Strange that it duplicates "Hot For Teacher" from GH:WT.
recharge138
Stacey's Mom, Running With the Devil, Everybody Wants Some, Panama and Unchained, that's it. Man, that guest list is overrun with RB retreads. Also, no Van Hagar = not a Van Halen game, sorry.
