Is anyone Beta Testing this yet?

I am, but not legitimately. Someone who shops at my store gave us his beta login and we share it, but I am the one who plays it the most.
fangwing
I opted in a few weeks ago but haven't gotten anything back yet.

How is it? Less tedious than CoH?
Kalidor
Overall its... better than CoH. But its still CoH 2 any way you look at it.

You can throw cars though, so that's a nice touch.
Patchouli Knowledge
I'd love to hug around with their costume creator, but I'm not motivated enough to playtest the actual game, so I didn't bother trying to get into the beta.
Kalidor
You can make ANYTHING.

Back in the 90s me and a friend had a 'Mutant Armadillo' named Tank. We made a version of Tank in CoH that was basically a grey stocky guy.

This is what we made in CO.

And I got news for you, there are no Armadillo parts in the costume creator. And the best part? His 'stance' is that he runs on all fours and his travel power is burrowing.
Patchouli Knowledge
That is pretty impressive. How close are they to opening up the beta?
Kalidor
not sure, the game got delayed. It was supposed to be out 7-15 now its due 9-1.

Robut.

I applied for the beta a couple months ago.. No word yet. I've updated the application few times just to be sure too.
theEvergreen
Kal, I've been in on it for a few months. I used to hate it because it ran like garbage and a lot of the costume pieces were out of whack. I recently upped the graphics load on it and for some reason it runs a million times better. My lvl 33 guy got wiped during the purge, but I am trying out a ton of new powers. Let me know your name and server and I'll hit you up.

Also, we shouldn't be violating the NDA, but I really hate playing alone. It defeats the MMO's purpose.

I'm making a new guy when the servers go up, so I'll be starting at square one.

EDIT:

PS- I notice you have cel-shading off. Seeing the game with Cel-shading has made me never want to turn it off.

I've been beta testing for about a month now, having a lot of fun with it.

Mentioning we are in beta doesn't violate the NDA, as Cryptic's said we can mention it, but I think those screenshots may be pushing it.
theEvergreen
Oh, that's fine then. I wasn't going to be a tattle about it. I was just concerned we'd get our beta powers taken, haha.

We need to all swap names.
DeltaSeeker
Mine's the same as my CoH global, @DeltaSeeker. I should be on tonight, not sure what time, though.

Sweet, it could be like a Superman 64 that doesn't suck.
fangwing
I believe the Beta NDA's been lifted.

(edit: oh, for review sites only. boogers.)

This looks interesting...

How would one get into it?

Go to Champions-online.com, there's a graphic link there to apply for the beta. They're not constantly inviting, though, they seem to invite a ton of people in all at once, and applying is no guarantee that you'll get in.
skankerzero
I'm waiting for this. I got a large group of my friends and coworkers into it. We'll have our own super group for sure. I'll be on the 360 as will almost all my other friends.

Is there a keyboard for the 360..?

Maybe not a full one, but at walmart I see small ones that connect to the controllers. Looks like the kinda keyboards you see on phones nowady.
skankerzero
They worked it so you can play with just the controller.

I believe the 360 is their lead system, so it should play great.
Kalidor
I would never violate any NDA that I participated in, however I have no yet been selected for the Beta and this is someone else's account. I know that may seem like convenient ethics, but its where I stand.
mignash
I'm not much for video games, but is this based at all on the old Iron Crown Enterprises Hero System paper and dice role playing game called Champions? Because I rock at that game. I have tons of characters for that on my web site.

I even did various characters for it from different fiction, like Beast Wars, Transformers and several comics I read when I was read a lot of comics.

Cheetor (From beast Wars) - http://home.comcast.net/~mathewignash/cscheetor.html

Mach-3 (From the Thunderbolts) - http://www.angelfire.com/scifi2/mathew/csmach3.html

Ultra the Multi Alien (from DC Comics) - http://www.angelfire.com/scifi2/mathew/csultra.html
Kalidor
Indeed. Well, the IP is. The game mechanics are based on the defunct Marvel MMO.

Also, as far as the Outlining goes, I just was not a fan. I like the more 'realistic' look so I'm glad you can turn it off.
Waspinator
I may have to get this game when it comes out...

Question: is there anything like the City of Villains Mastermind? Robotic minions are always fun.

So it has the Champions characters like Defender, Quantum, Solitaire, etc. ?

BTW - Is there a section on this board for paper and dice games? Or do they fall into the video game section?
Devcon
From reading some of the info on the Champions Page, yes the NPCs are there (They have a section on Defender there)

As for Pen and Paper RPGs (Or, in my vocabulary, REAL ones), topics about them usually go to General Discussion.
mignash
Thanks. Pencil, paper and dice games are becoming the stuff of myth and legends these days aren't they? Those kids and their new fangled video games.... When I was a kid video games made "bleep" noises and you could pick between electronic pong, hockey or table tennis and you were happy to get them!.... grumble gumble... old man rant of forgotten days... grumble.....
mignash
I suppose it's too much to hope that the game system translates in any way from the paper and pencil version of Champions? That you actually have similar stats, and powers with limitations and advantages during character creation? If it is anything like the old RPG, it might be worth getting.
Waspinator
Giantitp.com, the web site for the Order of the Stick (a D&D webcomic), has a pretty good PnP RPG section. There are still a lot of people who play them.
mignash
PnP? Ah, Pencil and paper. You kids and your texting ways. Thanks for the advice.

When I played there was no "Advanced" Dungeons & Dragons. It was just "Dungeons & Dragons" and we like it. Our dice were single color and you had to rub them with a crayon to be read!

Basic support is there, as in you can control your character. UI interaction using the controller is still spotty, but I imagine they'll have it all in place before September.

Edit:

Here's my character, taken from the Rate my Champion page on the main site:

I can't remember where I read it, but I believe the console version is coming out several months after the PC release. There a quite a few members of my supergroup that are a bit perturbed about it.
theEvergreen
My name is @godmodeON in case you're curious, or Mr. Nice Guy in-game.
Kalidor
Well, that's the thing. At Gamestop, the console version isn't even reserve-able anymore. I know that doesn't mean its not coming out, but it used to be on the list, then it got delayed and now its gone.

I hope it comes out sooner than later, as I REALLY want to play an MMO on a console.
Ave Destron
If this is on the 360 then color me hella interested.
Wingus
Got my app put in. Here's hoping for acceptance!
Bocc Kob
Wiki says the console version is a couple months after the PC version, however accurate if at all that is.

Does the game do anything new or interesting or is it just another "fight 20 thugs"/"fight everyone in the building" deal with shiny outfits?
Kalidor
Excuse me, I'm looking for Captain Fanzone...

Yeah, it has some neat features. Like Open Missions in which everyone can participate in a zone related goal. Less load screens, less instancing.

Of course the Kill X guys and Retrieve X objects is just a staple of any MMO. But there is a loot and crafting system. You can pick your powers ala cart so no being shoehorned into a 'role'.

I've only ever gotten to level 9 before the wipe but I beat the Canada scenario and it was pretty satisfying.

That does look rather tempting, and the character creator looks nice and "full".

Always sucks when you are running around in a group that unintentionally looks like they are all related.

Haha, I thought I posted a quick reply that praised you. I guess I messed up. I really think it's great. I honestly never even thought about doing anything like that.

BTW, has anyone tried the swinging travel power? I'm intrigued by it, but haven't had the guts to try it myself.
skankerzero
if the pc version comes out first, then I'll buy that just to get a lock on my character names on the servers.

Is there a "sample" character creator? As in, a web-based tool where I can screw around with making toons, but not in the game itself?

That's actually another outstanding feature. The only name 'locked' is your login/username. Its treated like a domain name and any username can be tied to it.

For example. If I get the username Kalidor (Which sometimes I don't) any charcter I create will be named 'name@Kalidor ' in the system. The display name will simply be "Name" but you have to add the @Kalidor to send me a tell. Your full character name is displayed in your profile.

So there can be 30 guys name "Firelad" and that's how they will look at a glance, but the system name keeps them unique.

A pretty good solution to the name squatting issue most MMO servers have.
