So I finally found a place that sells styrene in my area. I bought two small sheets of 1mm, some rods and some white putty. A lot of my measurements are off, but it will do for a first attempt. I am going to continue building this piece as a tutorial for myself on working with styrene and then I will go back and take acurate measurements and begin the process again. Here is the start of the chest piece.

and then off of the body

and next to the original.

So far, the only down time is the waiting for the white putty to set. This is a relatively easy and forgiving material to work with. I will keep everyone posted.
I am still working to incorporate the original stunticons heads with the Noh masks. I will post sketches once they are done.
Also, this is going to be my first time casting. I plan to sculpt the heads at double-three times intended size, cast them, hydroshrink them and then cast them again.
I will be going tomorrow to pick up a mat cutter and some of the styrene bars I saw. I am also going to look for something that works quicker than white putty.

hydroshrink. that some kind of hydro span reverse process?
TheDreadPirateHibiki
Sep 15 2008, 08:51 AM
Pretty much. You use a water mix when you cast the part and the water evaporates shrinking the piece. There is also Reducit and Reducit II.

Ok. So white putty is crap. It held fast through the night, but just touching the pieces today caused them to crumble. I bought some testor's styrene instant bond substance today. Hopefully it works better.

So the new instant bond adhesive stuff is great. Sets in a few seconds and is ready to be sanded in a matter of minutes. Holds very strong as well. I started working on the nose area of the chest piece. I'm not sure if I like the shap of the face. It reminds me of something, but I can't think what.

Doesn't look demonic enough for me...Maybe the eyebrows and sunken eyes will change that.

what is this "instant-bond" you speak of? is it thin as water and bonds the styrene?
I usually been using zap-a-gap, good stuff, and the flow control nozzle makes adhesion clean and precise.
You should look into some Superglue's Plastic Fusion, it comes in a duel apoxy applicator, best stuff I've used to date, stronger than JB weld. This stuff actually bonds to the plastic and it's thick it gets messy, but is easy to carve into and sand.
TheDreadPirateHibiki
Sep 16 2008, 03:07 PM
The instant bond is Testor's Plastic something-something. It has a needle like tip that leaves perfect beads. It actually melts the styrene slightly and leaves really smooth joints. I will look at the bottle when I get home and let you know.
As for epoxy, I usually use Devcon Plastic Welder. It bonds like magic, but sands easy enough. I'll have to post some of the "completed" projects I've used it on.

Gunmen are the robots from Gurren Lagann, and most have the design of a head with arms and legs. Some have a second head on top, which kind of resembles what you've got going here.

I like the demon mask concept, but I'm not sure about it being applied to the Stunticons. However, I suppose all I can do is wait and see how it turns out.

Sep 16 2008, 08:24 PM
You need to try the plastic fusion, I found it held up a lot better than devcon's apoxy, and it's white.
TheDreadPirateHibiki
Sep 16 2008, 10:33 PM
The design is actually one I have wanted to do for a while. I have this vision of panels opening exposing the innner demon face and just blasting the jive out of everything in front of the mouth. It is based on Bishamon, the werewolf from Vampire Hunter D and other demons I have seen. The masks should work out perfectly

Each mask fits the personality of the Stunticons pretty well.
F_R: I'll definitely give the plastic fusion a shot when it comes time to bond the styrene to the already cast bits.
And just for everybody, I'll make some sunglasses for Menasor once he is done. And maybe give him a drill.
I got the rough of the eyebrows done tonight. I'll post updates once the cheeks are in place.

Making some progress. I leveled up in styrene engineering.

And size comparison.

I hope to have the legs and feet done by the end of this month.

Now I need to go pick up another Unicron. I need more of the torso than I originally thought. Also, I really need the Maximus giftsets to come out already.

Got a little more work done. Have to work the arms over again. Although, the popeye forearms may work once I get the shoulders how they need to be. Also, I am going to be including some mechanical latissimus dorsi to make his upper body a little beefier.

And just because I think robots with rice hats are funny.

Gonna work on the proportions a little more this weekend and hopefully start the sculpting and shaping.

A little update.
Added the swivel joints to the thighs and finished the feet. Now I just have to figure out a way to mount the connectors on the bots without being too "obvious"

I think the swivel joints added just enough length to the legs, now I just need to widen them up.

"Trailer" needs more work...

Standing with the base of the new torso, have yet to start the sculpting on the face

I can't wait to see the finished product either

Who's that one guy?
Kalimol
Aug 27 2009, 10:13 PM
You know, that one guy. Who does the combiners.
I'm really digging this, and the idea of adding the trailer, which effectively doubles the mass of the combined robot, makes it extremely impressive-looking in the combined form - seeing the utterly dwarfed car parts hanging off the little guys. I wouldn't shy away from more or less putting a styrene box around the trailer in trailer mode, either, or at least something to fill in the space underneath the torso and wrap around the feet. You could get a convincing trailer that doesn't look like it's made of body parts and turn it into a variation on the original Menasor's "hood" in the combined form.
Very cool, in all, wherever you take it. I really want to bash a combiner of my own ....
TheDreadPirateHibiki
Aug 27 2009, 10:24 PM
Don't worry. I won't stop with the trailer until it looks like a trailer.
