The Drifter

Picked up G2 Dreadwing today (found him for 20 bucks in Akihabara). I love this guy - I see now why everyone thought Energon Starscream was a "remold" of Smokescreen.

Anyone know if there are any differences between him and the American version? (And man, Dreadwing really looks like he belongs in Animated).

Other than a few stickers missing, I'm not really seeing any differences from those images. Nice find though, Dreadwing has always been one of my favorite G2 figures

The stickers are actually unapplied.. I just left them as they were (the previous owner probably applied some)
And thank you

Still the best deco the mold has ever received. There's something really striking about the way the teal pops against all that black and dark blue, and with the bright red highlights the stickers provide. All of the various redecoes lost something in the transition, with the blander schemes, and with "Dreadwing" always having a light coloured head.

I agree about the Smokescreen love. G2 Smokescreen is still one of my absolute favorites to this day, and the reason I also have the BWII, RiD, and Robot Masters sets. Dreadwing while also nice, I'm not so die hard about. I almost skipped Gigant Bomb, but I figured my Smokesniper would be lonely.
I think the camo on the wings is the big thing that the later redecos lack. They add a lot of character. Also, the rounded edges on later releases

I have the RID version. It has some tolerance issues compared with the earlier releases, but it's still a rocking toy. I love how removing the smaller jet intiates autotransforming the larger vehicle into a tank.

Nice pictures Drifter. If it wasn't for you, I don't think I'd have ever discovered that Smokejumper had knees, so thankyou!

Wait, what? How could you even miss those?

Well it wasn't that obvious, all I thought it had were the inward transformation hinge thingies! I figured it was a toy from a by-gone era anyway, so I couldn't expect the world from it. It wasn't like a ball joint or ratchet or anything, it was fully a part of the leg, I just thought the knee was sculpted detail.

Despite the fact that he has every other point of articulation otherwise, and that his big partner is fully articulated, too? I had him new as a kid, when articulated Transformers were unheard of, and I didn't even miss that.

Why do people keep thinking articulation was rare for G2 molds? There were 38 or so new molds created for the line, and most of them had articulation on par with beast wars unless it would have made a gimmick not work.
1993 (1 mold):
Megatron. He's a brick.
1994 (11 molds):
Laser Rods (4 molds) articulation on par with GI Joe figures. And that was with a light gimmick.
Rotor Force (4 molds) mostly just sholder joints. (note that I said most)
Heroes (2 molds) RID level posability, and done without all the ball joints
Dreadwing and Smokescreen: just as posable as the Heroes
1995 (18 molds) and planned for 1995 (8 molds)
Cyberjets (3 molds): Ball Joints galore
Autorollers (4 molds): no leg posability for gimmicks, but arms are more posable than most BW toys.
Laser Cycles (2 molds): great posability, only hindered by bike kibble
Laser Prime: Not only does he rival BW figures, he does it without ball joints and with wires in both shoulders and down one arm.
Gobots (12 molds): not posable, but even without the actual axels, at that size there's no way a very posable toy would pass saftey requirements.
Power Masters (4 molds): I got nuttin.

hey, can't helped browsing through this old topic..but yeah, have to agree that G2 Dreadwing + Smokescreen are certainly awesome bots.
13 years back, the store in my town back then decided to get rid of it ASAP; each new set of dreadwing+smokescreen was only a mere $5 back then,so i bought 3 boxes of em,the other 2 for my cousins.

G2 guys are the forefathers of Tf articulation IMO.ball joints are indirectly introduced during this period.correct me if i'm wrong

Because G2 was the first line to really give us great articulation, and it only happened later on in the series when its' popularity was already waning.
I still remember when I got my first Cyberjet. I had no idea it was so articulated, and was completely floored.
