Eeyup. The core of the armature was milliput (yellow grey in the pic Ursa posted). I also use ProCreate.
Milliput is nice, because it is water-dilutible, so you can easily get smooth surfaces with a wet thumb. When cured I really like how hard and brittle it is, ideal to carve into, or make interesting rock formations. But it doesn't hold detail well at all, it's a very poor choice for actually sculpting miniatures. I use it for rocks, stone surfaces, or to cheaply bulk out armatures. I tend to use green stuff, because it is the industry standard when it comes to miniatures. It can withstand the heat and pressure when vulcanizing the molds for spin casting, it holds detail well, it is nice and sticky when fresh, so it can adhere to the armature/sculpt (and stickyness enables me to "pull" the putty outwards, when it adheres to my tool), while drying it changes it's properties (sometimes you want a less sticky, less soft putty), and it's just what I'm most used to. Familiarity with the medium is a huge deal. I go with Sculpey for projects I know will take a bit longer than the ~45min Green Stuff allows before curing. Apoxie Sculpt I have heard of, but I've never seen it in stores, so I never tried it. Is it any good? |

Apoxie is mostly sold by mail order. I like it a LOT better than Milliput. It does all the good things Milliput does, but is a lot less likely to end up lumpy (easier to combine the two parts), and is significantly stronger than Milliput. Apoxie Clay is pretty close to Milliput in texture and workability, but slightly less sticky. Apoxie Sculpt is stickier when uncured, but much harder when cured. Both adhere well for adding directly onto existing plastic. Pretty much every sculpt mod I've done in the past few years has used Apoxie, usually Apoxie Clay. It holds sharp details well, but can also easily be made into softer organic shapes.

I'll keep it in mind next time I order more putty. Is apoxie clay/sculpt water soluble, too? Because that is one of my favorite things about Milliput. Yep, the clay has pretty much the same water behavior as Milliput. Sculpt works differently, due to being sticky.

Oh come on, Des. You've got to want it.
QUOTE Ursa sat, studding the personnel readout, the blue screen of the monitor illuminating the pearly white glow of his armor. The sound of sifting that wafted up from behind distracted him, but only momentarily. The sweet smell of freshly ground wheat tried to drag his mind from work, but failed.
"Vhat are joo sinking of, my love?" the gentle sack cloth caressed his shoulder. "I was thinking of how beautiful you are." Ursa smiled. "Ze do not love joo. Ze do not appreciate joo. I ham ze only von who knows joor burden." Ursa relaxed his optics as he began to feel the fine powder filter down through his grooves. "Come, let me show joo vhat happiness is." The sack cloth fell away, falling on his shoulder with a puff of white. The cloud slowly wafted in the air in abstract beauty, before being sucked into his air intakes, tickling his filters and clogging his respirators. Ursa shuddered as an electrical surge overloaded his system. His diagnostic lights blinked red, a warning of imminent stasis lock. He over road it with merely a though. She was the kindest, my loving and beautiful creature Ursa had ever met. If he was to die, he was glad it was by her ecstasy, wrapped in her embrace. His only regret, he though as life slipped thought his fingers, was that he was the only one who could see her. --- Ursa woke up, putting a hand to his forehead as his mind stabilized itself. These nightmares were just getting weird. "I've got to stop watching that pony show before bed." that is much better (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif)
I'll admit mine was more of a synopsis for the 'twilight zone' (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif) anthology type show episode... but yeah, I didn't want to let Desbrony out too much over here in Iacon O_o there's no controlling him when he takes over... If the formula is still the same as the Apoxie Sculpt batch I ordered some years back, it's water soluble and completely non-toxic (so you could eat it if you're gross or just feel like licking your fingers (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif) )
I personally had a difficult time getting it properly mixed in even amounts, but that's probably not a problem for someone with more experience. Also: it smells like corn chips and can rot if left unopened (or stashed in a box for four years and you rediscover it and stupidly take a big sniff before you notice it's gone green) It's pretty nice once you get it properly mixed. Sticky at the start, but less as it cures, and if you get the ratio right it sets up nice and strong and can be easily carved. ..now I think I want to order some more. It was awfully handy stuff. |
