I don't know if anyone else will have something like this to share, but I thought maybe. This year was my second Botcon, but last time I didn't happen to see Vroom or Skyhammer. Or Crossblades or Thunderwing or Roadblock, I guess. I'd never seen any of them in person. So...they've been out 23 years and I've been an avid TF collector for half that time now. And, granted, not awfully interested in the last couple years of G1, but...it's sort of embarrassing. I recognized them immediately, because I have Generations and other guidebooks, but it was quite a shock to see how tiny they were. I assumed they were the same size as my 88 Pretenders.
It's kinda like the first time I saw Grimlock and Soundwave, I suppose, though that was in 1985. They seemed a lot bigger to me from looking at the catalogs. And probably anyone seeing Fort Max for the first time thinks he's actually bigger than they imagined. |

Yeah, lots of late Pretenders were like Mini-Bot sized. Part of the reason I hoped to see them make Legends of the inner robots that fit in Deluxe to Voyager sized shells.

Embarrassing late revelation. I've owned Fort Max since he came out in 1987. For years I was unhappy with Cerebros' arms because the shoulders were so far forward. Then years and years and years after getting him I pushed a little harder on his shoulders than I ever had before apparently, and they slid right back into a reasonable and appropriate location. Doh. -ZacWilliam, ooh, also, got G1 Gears for a gift last month and realized with surprise he's probably the only 84-88 toy I've never seen in person before. Pictures, but never in person and it was so weird to see and hold a Gears toy. His colors were brighter than I thought, he's extra short, just strange to think I'd never really seen him before. -------------------- Ever wonder about the speed of Turbofoxes?

At BotCon in the dealer room I was struck by how tiny the Omnibots are and how huge Sky Lynx is.

I'm always surprised by how small most G1 toys really are. It makes me wonder why we can't get cheaper reissues. Drop the metal if necessary. I want to get a G1 collection going but it's hard to pay so much for toys that are smaller than Deluxes.
-------------------- You're turning into the real-life version of that little devil that hovers over people's shoulders and tells them to do horrible things. I'm not liking this development. Lesson of the day, when we go on some crazy quest, don't let Fnu Aw hold the Dues Ex Magical Artifact. Right, that's it. Tomorrow, I'm painting a giant pentagram on the floor, then buying a goat and sacrificing it to Fnu Aw, Lord of All Evil. |

sometimes I pick up one of the G1 toys I have left (or one of the reissues) and it takes me a second or two to remember that my hands have tripled in size - compared to the muscle memory that comes rushing up to the forefront of my consciousness.

The size stuff threw me too. This was my first Botcon and there were a lot of things that were different than I expected. I had forgotten how big G2 Megatron was and didn't realize how big things like G1 Razorclaw or Air Attack Optimus Primal were. That said, I had no clue how teensie the bat/alligator Optimus/Megatron figures were.

I remember when I first got my hands on G1 Snarl. I was 5-6, and he so huge! O_O Like a Voyager or something. Now I'm 24, and I start laughing every time I see, that he's really no bigger then a deluxe...(IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif)

Oh yeah, I remember how severely I was taken aback by the small size of the G1 Autobot cars when I went to my first convention in 2001. I wondered if I was looking at downsized knockoffs, my mind couldn't process it.

I'm always surprised when I see more U.S. toys that I can't identify. Like, nearly all of the new-character Targetmasters. It's like "huh, I guess at this stage I'm never going to really absorb this." -------------------- The TFWiki: when just five Infernos aren't enough. http://www.tfwiki.net

I distinctly remember how ticked off I was at the size of a lot of the japanese Beast Wars and Car Robots figures I imported. Pics always made them seem HUGE, and here they were all tiny (to my mind).
I was also rather shocked when I first saw pictures or Metroplex with scramble city limbs attached to him. I had both for years and never knew they could do that. -------------------- Clearing out some old TFs and Mugenbine in my BST Thread. You know you want some of these.

I realised early on that G1 Soundwave's guns could store in his back; never made the connection, his alt mode's "batteries", until someone mentioned it here about two years ago! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-wildride.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif)

The problem is my brain still refuses to adjust to fit logical arguments. The only Targetmaster I had as a kid was Sureshot. I pull him out of storage and I see how much smaller he is now that I'm an adult. But then I look at pictures of Triggerhappy or Point Blank on the Wiki and my brain's like, "Whoa, those guys must be huge!"

Hi-res pics of figures always seem to make them look bigger to me. Maybe it's because of all the detail they pick up, I dunno.

I forgot until just now, but I also saw the black Zone jet at Botcon and he was tiny. Is Diatlus tiny too? How tall are he and the space shuttle?

Tracks and Skids were a surprise to me as an adult. I never knew they existed as a kid and when those old Transformers Identification books came out the listing for Wheeljack made mention of having wings before Tracks. I thought they were mentioning some Hot Wheels set and moved on. When I saw images of those two they just looked like TF knock offs to me.
To this day they are the two G1 guys I am most indifferent to as I have no nostalgia attached to them. -------------------- |
