Off topic: Do space t-Rexes have hand lasers or are they reserved for classics Kup? Hand-Lasers are indeed reserved for Classics Kup. However, Space T-Rexes DO send the books. Brawn does it, too. (Mudflap doesn't, but he's still epic.) -------------------- |

This whole idea that Hasbro retired the Dinobots is highly dubious. It sounds like the kind of thing a third string Hasbro marketing person spouts off in a side interview at a convention one time, and then two years later when Hasbro announces the new line of Target exclusive Masterpiece Dinobots people are saying "hey, remember when they retired the Dinobots? What happened with that?" The only consistent rule with Transformers is Hasbro is going to do whatever they feel like and view as likely to be profitable. They can say all they want about what's retired but unless it's a legally prompted decision (a la reissues not passing drop tests), anything they say about permanent decisions is meaningless. Heck, take a look at G. I. Joe. In 1987, they had the original Cobra Commander get shot in the back by a traitor. In 1990, he returned, re-took control of Cobra, ordered the traitor buried alive, and for good measure ordered a number of suspected co-conspirators buried alive with him. Ca. 1992, they had it that two of the people who were buried alive, Zartan and Billy, somehow managed to escape... just in time for Zartan to get a new figure release. That same year, they revealed that a third guy, Firefly, faked his death and also managed to escape... thereby giving the writers a chance to show off his new figure as well. Oh, and the next year a fourth guy, Dr. Mindbender, got cloned because CC decided that he actually did need his resident mad scientist after all. Cue new figure. And now I hear that Sneak-Peak, a Joe who bought it in 1991 when he got mowed down by a Cobra heavy weapons team, is now alive and well in the IDW continuation of the series. Yeah. None of which has an relevance to this topic at all. -------------------- |

Having gotten to sit down and talk with Matt many times (A few times in the bar) I can tell you that his passion for the characters and this franchise is genuine.

I don't think that part was ever in question.

I just assumed "retired" meant that Hasbro had no ideas on how to use the Dinobots in upcoming fiction, so it was up to Tieger and crew to come up with something compelling.
After all, nothing's REALLY off the table. -------------------- |

From the article it sounds like the dinobots were off-limits as just throw-away character models, store exclusives, cameos etc. So, kudos to Hasbro for valuing the integrity of the universe they're establishing.
I think the Hasbro reps Tieger spoke with raised good points. It doesn't make sense for Dinobots to be, well, Dinobots in a world that has never been exposed to Earth. It sounds like they liked the general pitch, and understood why the characters were useful mechanically, but they needed a sound reason for them to exist in that form. It's all there in the article. Tieger builds a back story from previously established material and boom! The whole story arc is more sound, plot holes are closed, everyone goes to their designing corners happy. The system works. |

Yeah, not buying the "retirement" thing either. Not least because of the trademark issue - gotta keep that name in circulation. I suppose we could end up with more green construction vehicles named Grimlock, but I find it more likely that we'll still get Dinobots every now and then.
Seems more likely that Hasbro just didn't have a place for them right now in Movie 4 or Prime, and wanted a good pitch for the video game that made sense. |

Wasn't the DS version of WFC the last appearance of Grimlock? War for Cybertron killed the Dinobots. Yes, but the DS version of Grimlock turned into a tank instead of a Space T-Rex, so I guess Hasbro were OK with it. -------------------- TFWiki.net - The Transformers Wiki: because where else are you going to learn about The Battle for Planet Earth?
