QUOTE nd here comes the (non-final) box art for "God of War: Ascension." Sony has yet to formally announce a new God of War game for PlayStation 3, but retailers and composers seem to be doing a fine job of making it known. Based on cover art pulled from Amazon's servers, it seems the upcoming game has ditched the Roman numerals in favor of a succinct subtitle. Of course, the important number is the Greek one -- as in where will Kratos find the ancient gods to up his already extravagant body count? (Update: It looks like the game is a prequel, so there should be some hitherto unknown bodies to skewer.) We'll let you know as soon as we learn more about God of War: Ascension. I'm sure I'll wind up playing it, but this franchise needs a serious break before it goes stale. Let the developers do something new. They're obviously pretty talented.

As for whether or not the franchise needs a rest, there've only been three proper home console releases (on two different generation systems) in the series in seven years, plus two handheld games to round that out. Betrayal hardly counts, even though it does fit into the over-arcing story of the franchise. Either way, a 2d mobile phone platformer certainly counts as "something different." Compared to the constant slough of Call of Duty games that are being churned out - which still sell billions of copies - I'll take a new God of War any day. Just took a look, and seems to be a sidescroller. What systems is it available for? I've only seen Andrioid so far. I've not actually played Betrayal either, but I think you can play it on Android or iPhone. It does look like a fun platformer, though.
