A few years ago, someone on the board suggested that a fun reuse of the wonderful Cybertron Downshift mold would be to add a new head and repaint it as a 1970s version of Prowl. I think they were kidding.
I AIN'T. I haven't been able to stop thinking about that idea whenever another "repaint suggestions" thread pops up, and I've written it into three BotCon surveys. But, well, it's a pretty implausible suggestion. So I finally decided to cave and make it myself. Thing is... I don't really have any idea what I'm doing. I've only made one tiny repaint before--RiD mini-Scourge in G1 Prime colors--and it's lumpy and the paint was sticky for a year. So I'm going to try to do this one better. Here's what I've got so far: -Big Daddy, with grey parts swapped in from a Cybertron Downshift (though I need a new waist piece, this one has a broken clasp, grr) -Kre-O Prowl head, back shaved and post-plate trimmed to fit inside Big Daddy's chest The head's not attached yet, but it'll look about like this: (IMG:http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/destinb/01.jpg) Here are some of the images I'll be referencing: (IMG:http://fc09.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2011/198/f/e/1970s_dodge_highway_patrol_car_by_vash68-d3ycvvg.jpg) (IMG:http://images107.fotki.com/v159/photos/5/516696/1891468/108-vi.jpg) (IMG:http://www.friedmanarchives.com/Non-Gallery-Images-1/images/Highway%20Patrol%20Car%20CHP%20IMG_9667.jpg) So basically, here's what I have to do: -Take the chest apart without losing or breaking anything -Install the new head -Remove the flame deco -Paint the roof, doors and maybe the shins white. Hm, maybe the feet too. He's gonna need more white. -Score another junker Downshift, salvage waist -Find a way to get California Highway Patrol stickers (custom Reprolabels? 1/32 model kit?) and some Prowl stickers -Find and attach a usable light-bar, like the one in the first reference photo above (1/32 model kit?) -Bask in glory of 1970S PROWL I've already gotten some solid tips from Paintmaster Cheets on what paints to buy and how to apply them. So for now, I could use some some ideas for how to procure the stickers and light-bar, any feedback or suggestions you may have, and plenty of good-luck wishes. I imagine this'll be a bit of a slow, when-I-have-time process, but I'll update when I've got something to show... |

That's pretty freakin' awesome!
I had a similar idea, but mine was for Barricade rather than Prowl. -------------------- QUOTE You're far too young to be this bitter and angry at the world.... ![]() |

Actually, it probably would be good for Barricade, since it'll be a lot of black and the front claws and everything but PROWL IT SHALL BE.

I kinda feel the arms should be white as well, to help add to his Prowliness.

I'm considering that. I think if the doors are completely white, it'll create the white-upper-arm look that G1 Prowl has. I figure I'll put a modified version of his shield up there, too, and the sergeant stripes up there somewhere.
But if that's not enough, yeah, I might paint the upper arms themselves (assuming I can get those damned pins out). I do want this to end up looking like, y'know, Prowl. Not just Big Daddy dressed as Barricade with a Prowl head. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) This post has been edited by ChessPieceFace: Apr 18 2012, 12:17 AM |

He needs sunglasses and 70's porn-moustache (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif) I'm making Classics 1970s Prowl, not Animated 1970s Prowl. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif) |

Someone should draw a 1970s version of Animated Prowl, though. Definitely aviators and pornstache, and obviously a CHiPs motorcycle alt-mode...

Most hobby places will sell decal sheets. All you need is a high res image and a good printer.

Ooo, that'd be nice.
I've got a vector image of the Cali Highway Patrol shield, so I can use that to make the door logo. The rest should be easy enough to create in Photoshop. Then I can get exactly the right sizes, instead of hacking at a model kit decal sheet, and I can afford to make some mistakes and reprint. |

Are there any sites that host large scans of G1 sticker sheets?

Agreed. Who around here draws animated-style stuff? You could commission Wingus for a nice cheap piece. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif) This mold WOULD make a pretty awesome classics Barricade.... Once I make more money, I'm putting some aside to try and commission one from one of the fine customizers at the Allspark. -------------------- QUOTE You're far too young to be this bitter and angry at the world.... ![]() |

Good concept. I think a Starsky & Hutch Red alert out of a Prime Cliffjumper would rock.

Progress!
I removed the orange flames, filled in the sides with styrene and did some painting. (IMG:http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/destinb/Collection/progress0.jpg) Here's how it looks now: (IMG:http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/destinb/Collection/progress1.jpg) (IMG:http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/destinb/Collection/progress2.jpg) (IMG:http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/destinb/Collection/progress3.jpg) (IMG:http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h70/destinb/Collection/progress4.jpg) I'm more or less pleased so far, but the flaws are obvious. The tape I used, which was supposedly specifically for model paint masking, allowed plenty of bleed. The window edges are a mess. Also, while it shows up a lot more in these pictures than in person, an orange sheen remains from the flames on the front sides. Also, the thinned paint didn't exactly hide the slight separation between the original doors and the styrene, but that's not such a big deal, a decal should still look fine. Better than the canyon that was there before, anyway. So, anyone have suggestions on how to kill that orange sheen and clean up the window and shinguard edges? I'm sure I can use a tiny brush to make the window lines a bit straighter, but I'm not sure how to remove the "overspray" without ruining the rest of the paint (thinner) or scratching up the windows (scratching off the paint with a pin). |
