So in the latest issue Avengers Academy, Hank Pym objects to the term "Godson" on account that he's an Athiest.
(IMG:http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/8209/picture53c.png) But think about that for a second, And I mean reaaaaaaaaaaly think about that. Doesn't this guy meet gods like ALL THE TIME!? I'm pretty sure they saw an Eternal earlier IN THE SAME ISSUE. Doesn't Mephisto like cause trouble for them all the time? And he's the freaking Devil! THOR! Remember Thor? Your Buddy? You founded the Avengers together! Your colleagues come back from the dead all the t- no no... you're right... There is absolutely nothing beyond the realm of your understanding in the miraculous world of the Marvel Universe. |

Yeah.. I like positive portrayals of atheists in the media, but when a fictional universe is stuffed full of active gods it gets kind of silly.

I'm almost positive Hank subscribes to the belief that any deities and devils/demons he's met are simply highly-advanced extra-dimensional beings. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif)

Spider-Mans listed as a protestant but people will curse Marvel now that he's prayed to the Beyonder in one recent issue, I forget which.

Reminds of Han Solo who doesn't believe in the force, a completely laughable point of view to have in the Star Wars universe.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif) Pretty much. But yeah...Eternity, Death, etc, sure as heck aren't aliens or advanced humans like the Eternals, so it does come off as silly. -------------------- |

If anything it would make someone LESS likely to believe in the God since you do have a bunch of "highly-advanced extra-dimensional beings" running around. -------------------- ![]() |

What the hell does terminology have to do with anything? I'm an atheist and I still call my godfather a godfather.

Has Ant Man ever been dead? If nothing else I believe he was among the half of the universe killed by Thanos in INFINITY GAUNTLET. However I may be wrong about that. This post has been edited by ^0^CORVUS^o^: Apr 11 2012, 12:27 PM -------------------- |

At least Marvel obfuscates their cosmology behind sci-fi trappings most of the time.
In DC comics, Mister Terrific is an atheist, and he's on the JLA reserve with Zauriel, an actual angel. -------------------- |

I feel it's sloppy writing to characterize a scientist as an atheist in a world where gods are real. Such a person should be the first to believe in such entities, as sufficient proof of their existence is there. Atheists in a theoretical world where proof of gods is as available as proof of anything in our world would actually be extremely delusional people, equivalent to conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones who believe in all manor of nonsense but quests the mundane obvious truths of the world around us.

Like was stated above, he doesn't actually believe theyre gods. And since he's seen and experienced so many of them first hand, that stance is honestly pretty understandable.K

How are we defining god? Or God for that matter. Just because an extra-dimensional being weilds a nearly indestruble hammer and can control the weather, it doesn't affect, one way or another, whether or not the universe was created by an all-powerful, omnipresent diety. There's still no direct evidence one way or another. Just because you find a Unicorn doesn't mean alien abuction stories are real. How is Ant Man defining God? In this Universe, the only thing which might make sense is to question the existence of the Abrahamic God. With all these creatures which are essentially Gods, what does he even mean when he says he's an Atheist? Yes, they're all advanced beings, some sort of alien. We accept that Thor is such, but in the Marvel Universe life itself was seeded by a progenitor race if I understand correctly. If he's simply denying the existence of a single God, that might make sense, but with all the straight up magic, afterlife, god after god after god, then to proclaim yourself an atheist is a really stupid statement that requires some context.
In this context, relating to "godfather" or "godson" I think "I'm not Christian" would suffice. Just who would be Christian in the Marvel Universe anyway? Can't they just go back in time and see what the fuss was about? Wouldn't they just assume Jesus was a mutant? Or maybe the writers decided after 3 days that he could sell more issues? -------------------- |

I don't understand what all the confusion is about. As has already been stated, many of the scientist-types of the MU ascribe no religious origin to the beings that call themselves gods. Iron Man writers in particular can't stop repeating themselves on the subject.
When you've actually MET Volstagg, you realize the classification "god" gets tossed around rather loosely. Though Detour is right, it's just a stupidly-written piece of dialogue to begin with. Just use the term everyone else uses, Pym, you bunghole. -------------------- This week at Comic Critics!: Like a Brit out of Hell

Adherents.com already has a list going of comic book characters by denomination.
And here's the list for *minor* characters, as it was too big for the main page. Unfortunately, for all the research they did, they apparently didn't take the time to actually ensure that it was all that legible. -------------------- Lexicon: still up and running!

Isn't it rather silly that Super Heroes have religious affiliations at all, seeing as how they're basically just the Grecco-Roman Pantheon modernized? Heck, most if not all the Grecco-Roman Pantheon appear in these books.
