James Cameron makes first solo dive into world's deepest undersea trench Options

This is unbelievably cool.

Earlier today James Cameron - yes - piloted a one-man submarine at the bottom-most depths of the Marianas Trench more than seven miles below the ocean surface. This is only the second manned dive to the bottom of the trench in history - the first having been in the early 1960s, with a limited view through a single tiny porthole that was mostly obscured by the silt kicked up by dropping the original submersible. Cameron will be filming everything, including whatever comes to investigate the scented baits dropped down to the site several hours earlier.

Even if all he sees are sea cucumbers and tripodfish, it will still be enthralling to see what it actually looks like - possibly the most environmentally extreme spot on Earth known to be inhabited by vertebrate life! (Antarctica's dry valleys are even more alien, which is why nothing more complex than algae and lichens has ever been seen there).
