If you regard it as the evolution of the Transformers as a race, probably Beast Machines.

If we're extrapolating from G1 and G2, G3 would look like G1 and G2.

Isn't there a G5?

Gen3 would look like Gen2, except produced in the earlier 2000s so I'm going to assume that rather than 90s as heck, it would instead look Grimdark as heck. Everyone would be gritty realistic repaints with ridiculous battle damage and any new molds would have scowls all the time

Well that's why I answered the way I did. Generation 2 as a toy line was a lot of G1 guys painted in crazy colors.. but as a story that was being told the Generation 2 Transformers were on Off Shoot race of Transformers who considered the Generation 1 guys to be outdated ancestors.

Would it be rock candy? So in theory the Rock Lords are Generation 3.

Case closed!

Hmm

Okay, you know what? Let's do this logically.

G1 to G2:

Recut rebroadcast cartoon

Hideous garish recolours of old toys and a few new ones

Short-lived comic-book which was grimdark and gritty and EXTREME

So then G3 would be

Completely new cartoon that contradicts previous shows and features characters acting wildy different (Starscream is loyal, the contructicons ditch the decepticons and join the autobots after two episodes, the Dinobots are smart, Soundwave talks like a normal guy)

Reserved, dulled military-style repaints with decals and serial numbers, and uses soft pastel colours for highlights

long-running comic book that is pleasant and positive, with a relaxed pace and a very slow, deliberate mystery plot

I always thought of Classics/Universe/Generations as sort of a G3.

Oh yeah, and all the comic covers would be of Transformers lazing about, looking thoughtful, or painting modern art.

Man, if we use the MLP system for reckoning generations, we're up to what, Generation 9 or 10?

Funny, I was just wondering that earlier-- glad this topic was made to save me the trouble.

It might seem simple at first, but then, how does one count concurrent generations, i.e. Beast Wars and Machine Wars?

I guess that since G2 continued G1, then sequential lines would be different generations as well-- Beast Wars and Beast Machines, for example, and AEC would be three separate generations as well.

G1,G2, MW is G2.5 BW/BM is G3

rid is H1

Armada is Ut1
Energon is UT2
Cybertron is UT3

Prime is G1

then we have Lam1-3 which are the FU-niverse

(see how the 2 kinda g1 based parallel universes are lettered on either side of G (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif) )

the G3 toyline also includes any 'Universe' toy because of how Beastmachines ended

Most of the fandoms that use "Generation" as a name for their toys tend to do it as a line-wide shift of engineering.

For instance, GI Joe is G1 until Valor vs Venom happened, and the basic buck and sculpting style changed. 25th Anniversary is G3.

We apparently ignore misnomers like GI Joe EXTREME, though.
