Not sure if this is the right place or not...
Let's say I have a picture of a thing: http://www.dalong.net/review/mg/m21/p/m21_n01.jpg And I want to change the purple in the picture to, I dunno, green. How can I do that? Realistically, if someone has tutorials on this, I wouldn't mind seeing them. Doing colors in Photoshop has always been very challenging for me, and seeing good techniques and step-by-step processes would be awesome.
Also textures, if I'm being greedy. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) Everything these days has subtle paint-y or paper-type texture to it, and it boggles my mind how this is achieved. Short of taking classes in digital illustration, are there decent guides for this type of stuff online? |

My basic launching points came from here, but there's all sorts of tutorials out there on the net, so just Google away. The techniques taught there, though, are pretty basic, but go a long way. For something as basic as hue-swapping though, there's a couple of ways to go about it. Mostly, though, you'll use your Lasso tool and carefully select the area you want colour-changed. With that done, you can either play around with the hue/saturation balances to get a rough approximation of the colour you want. Alternately, you can greyscale and lighten the selection, up the contrast to pick out the shadows more, and then throw a translucent layer of colour on top of it (either lower the opacity of the layer, or set the layer function to "Multiply", depending on the functions of your image editing software). With a Multiply layer, you can also attempt to do things like add some new colour designs to what was once a monochrome area. Digibashing light colours over dark ones proves tricky though. You can negative the selection, turning the dark areas lighter so that your colours become more apparent, but the inverted shadows wind up making the selection look like chrome. But there's not much else you can do about that. Also, this thread should've gone in "Grapple's Drafting Desk" in the Iacon Art Forum. But then, that thing receives such little traffic... the honest to goodness trick to it is taking an editing program and just sitting down with it and learning what it can and can't do for you.
