I really like the idea of adding new members to old scramble city teams, I'd kinda prefer it if they felt a little more thematically appropriate than these though.

Coast Guard ship and say Hose Truck maybe?

Still, neat idea.

It looks like you could still build a G1 style Defensor if you wanted to, since Skyfeather apparently becomes a shield, and Heatrock a chestplate.

Yes, that's the whole point of them combining with the larger Hot Spot. They right out and say that. You can do normal Gaia Guardian or God Gaurdian whose basically Defensor with sheild and armor.
