That's twice now that Over-Run has been used in a "Crap! We need a new name!" situation.

Wasn't "Runabout" already known to be unavailable way back when Hasbro had to call his Cybertron counterpart Runamuck instead?

It seems like FunPub doesn't check until the toys are being produced for some reason, which seems odd. Same thing happened with Botcon Streetwise.

Couldn't they do Run-a-bout instead or will that not get around the problem?

Well, it's not an instant process. Especially since it has to go through Hasbro Legal.

Any new trademark would have delayed the toys. Any trademark that would require a check by Hasbro Legal (whether it was due to age or other reasons) would have delayed the toys. So to keep the toys on schedule, a name from the past couple years was reused.

And this is of course just for the toy. Anything that has to do with the character in fiction will still call him "Runabout".

Given how long we've known these guys were coming, and obviously FP has known for even longer, it does seem more than a little odd that they are seemingly just now discovering "Runabout" wasn't available. It smacks of a lack of planning.

Fun Pub doesn't hold any trademarks. That all belongs to Hasbro. So Hasbro have to be the ones to check to see if they own/can own the names. Fun Pub can't check anything.

So Fun Pub can plan all they want. And it can be a 100% fool proof plan on their end. But after all of that, they still have to rely on Hasbro for the whole thing to come together.

Believe me, I know all too well how relying on Hasbro can work. Nonetheless, given this (in the form of Streetwise) has bitten FP in the past, I would think they might spend a little more time asking the appropriate parties "Hey, you ever find out if we can use 'Runabout'?".

I prefer to use the name on the packaging in most cases and think of a reason why they would change their name in fiction when upgrading to their new form. Whether its by choice like Bumblebee to Goldbug or forced changed names like Octane to Tankor.

Obviously I won't use names like Beast Changer.

The last (and only) time Run-Over was used was 2003. Nine years ago.

That's quite some time since someone at Hasbro checked on the name. It more than likely would have required a search.

Over-Run was used last year. No search necessary.

So if the time constraints were such that they could not wait for a search, Run-Over wasn't an option.

Battle Charger then. Last used a year ago. An appropriate name that does not change anything about him. When having to change a character's name, the original team name if they were in one should be the first thing to check.

But obviously I wouldn't want Octane to be given the name "Triple Changer" on his packaging.
