Do kids watch this show? Did it teach them that sometimes you have to steal? And that hunting is wrong?

Stealing in order to survive seems like a perfectly acceptable moral, albeit one that I hope folks never have to put into practice.

Hunting being wrong, however, I don't think is an intended moral. Panthro and Cheetara were both perfectly fine with hunting in order to get food, and the classic series said that hunting for food was perfectly fine if you needed it; it's the Kittens who didn't want to kill and eat cute cuddly critters, and frankly I don't blame them.

Oddly a lot of people are grumbling about today's episode over at the TC boards (especially as to why Cheetara and Panthro left them in the forest). Me, I loved it... mostly because, again, I can totally relate to the kittens. Especially after reading Jules Verne books, or Robinson Crusoe, I often wondered, if I could kill an animal just to be able to eat? 'Cause I am the sort of guy who picks up spiders and carefully takes them outside my flat. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) And man, the show creators can come up with some really cool animal designs. The bird-deer family were simply adorable.
I honestly thought it was a lesson that needed to be learned.  It was harsh, I know. But if the kittens didn't learn it in Thundera, they should probably learn it then and there in the wild that it's a harsh world.

Which...funny thing...seems like they should have already learned that lesson.

Apparently! They certainly didn't learn the lesson that Cheetara and Panthro set out to teach.

Which I honestly don't think was a bad lesson.  I get the feeling they went with the "hunting's wrong" aesop so that those stupid activist groups...not to name names...(coughpetacough)...wouldn't do their usual dickery and come down on someone who would even remotely dare to say that hunting is sometimes necessary in the big bad world if you want to survive.

I mean, seriously!  It's not that they have anything wrong with the lesson "do what you must to survive." Obviously stealing's just fine. Hunting on the other hand.   (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-primal.gif)

...Seriously...just... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-primal.gif)

Yeah, that was a nice moment.

Oh, there's only one spot open right now, so we're gonna have...tryouts.  Make it fast.

I want to know how Panthro got those scars.

Stealing in order to survive seems like a perfectly acceptable moral, albeit one that I hope folks never have to put into practice.

And of course, the only reason they had to steal to survive was because nobody was willing to help them, and some even assumed they were already thieves before they ever resorted to stealing. So the moral may have been "treating the less fortunate badly creates situations where they have to steal".

I think there was an intended moral there, but it wasn't "hunting is wrong". It was "do things your own way"; their father even said he was doing things his own way in the flashback. So, they followed the example of their father and found food their own way.
Though, was anyone else expecting them to kill the predator that they saved the bird-deer from, drag it back, and ask if it was edible?

You mean "doing what you have to" and "making tough choices", the lesson that the flashbacks showed us they had already learned? Their reluctance to kill the bird-deer wasn't, as Panthro and Cheetara assumed, because of a lack of understanding of those concepts; it was because of an actual difference in priorities, as shown when they fought to protect the bird-deer.

Good point. But I think whatever the moral they were going for, it was about as clear as mud what it was. Oh well. It was a nice half hour ride in any case.

Yes. Bambi has a whole movie dedicated to the other. But it was just kinda striking to me.

Episode was kinda "meh" with me. Nice to get the origin of the Thunderkittens, but what I want more than anything is to see them utuilizing more of their bags or tricks in battle.

Anyway, it was satisfying to finally see Cheetara lose her cool, or at least come really darn close to it.

Yeah, that was a nice moment.

They shouldn't have let the kittens watch the Hunger Games.

What I especially liked is that this episode is basically simultaneous with the previous one. Nice bit of continuity/timing.

It occurs to me that, if we ever see the kittens' family again, they might not get a warm welcome. That's if they're still there. I shudder to think what could happen to those outlying homesteads now that Thundera itself is gone. And with people like Atticus and Kaynar out there. . .

Was the tornado that killed the Thunderkittens' father the same one from the Panthro origin episode and the Petlar episode?

Nice nod of continuity, if so.

Tornado shouldn't have killed pops if pops had half a brain.

Instead of wasting time trying to run in the same path as the twister, and try to climb over a thick tree trunk, he should just have run to the left or right of the path, so he's no longer in the funnel's path.

...oh right, cartoon, drama, lol.

Also:

The kid's family brings a large plot hole to the show. If they really existed prior to the kids going to Thundera, how come the kids never once asked to visit their old home to make sure their family is okay and take them with them (or find a safe spot for them), or gone to bury them, if the reptiles killed them on the way to Thundera.

I mean, it seems that the family home was a very long way away from Thundera, so there's a good chance they survived the invasion.

It's a good question, but not a plot hole. Even when this week's plot stirred up the memories in them, they still didn't share the story with Panthro and Cheetarah. They don't want to talk about it.

And maybe their home is in the opposite direction from the Tower of Omens and they've never been anywhere close to it since.

You don't live anywhere near Tornado Alley, do you? Tornadoes don't simply travel in straight lines. They swerve, they jump, they change speeds and directions, etc. Trying to guess where a tornado is going and simply moving someplace else isn't just stupid, it's suicidal. The ONLY reasonable survival tactic is to get to the nearest shelter as fast as possible. That's what he was trying to do. No unnecessary cartoon drama here.

I am rather disappointed thus far that they haven't done anything about the refugee/survivor issue. At least they could do some lip-service to how others escaped or were all hunted to extinction or something. I dislike the implication that there's been a full blown holocaust without addressing it directly, but that's just me really.

I did like that the kids have other siblings out there though. At least in theory.

I agree that you can't predict the path of the storm, but on the other hand he could certainly ran around the tree rather than trying to climb it.

While you can't predict the path of the storm, you can hedge your bets on getting out of the IMMEDIATE PATH of it, then hunkering down somewhere safe when you're not going to get tornado-nabbed. The kid's dad should have moved out of the obvious, immediate path of the storm by going off to one of the two sides of it, then finding safety.
