Simpsons only occasionally has continuity. Generally, any changes are undone by the end of the episode, with later references to them made only vaguely. Or if something life-changing does occur, it's usually within one episode, and that change sets the status quo for future episodes. F'rinstance, Apu gets married in one episode, then he's referenced as married in subsequent episodes without reference to how long it's been, then there's another episode where they have octuplets, which then stay the same age in subsequent episodes.
I don't know why you'd consider it "wrong/lazy," it's just how the show works. It's making good use of the fact that it's a cartoon. They have complete freedom to change something when they want to, or not if they don't. |

I won't fault a show that's celebrated Christmas on two dozen separate ocassions yet Bart has remained 10 years old for its continuity.
After 20+ years, I think we should all be familiar with how the Simpsons handles such things. I think the ocassional characters "progression" followed by a "regression" is one of the things that sort of works with the crazy length of the show. For several seasons, they let Barney sober up and drink nothing but coffee. When they realized that made him boring, they turned him back into a drunk with (I think) one line from a song number. Milhouse's parents broke up for what felt like forever, then they got back together and that's it. Do Edna and Skinner still date? I remember they kept that going for a while and then kinda dropped it, only refrencing it in jokes now and again. Apu's wife and kids are the only thing that's really stuck, and I guess that's because getting rid of 8 babies is probably hard to write. So yeah, characters change and they do so for what would typically be the length of a NORMAL television series, then things go back to normal for them and in 7 years we've already forgotten they were ever a Buddhist. -------------------- Hey, check out one of my sites!

Edna and Flanders got together recently, but I don't know if that stuck. I think there was a fan vote on whether or not it would be permanent, btu I don't know how that played out.

The "Yes On Nedna" votes won last fall, but (presumably) because of their significant development time, subsequent episodes haven't focused on the relationship. Maybe next season.
*edit* Oh, here we go. https://www.facebook.com/notes/the-simpsons...150769214063656 QUOTE Sunday, May 13
THE SIMPSONS (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT) – “Ned ‘N Edna’s Blend” When the town of Springfield discovers that Ned (Harry Shearer) and Edna (guest voice Marcia Wallace) have secretly gotten hitched, Marge offers to throw them a congratulatory reception. However, bringing everyone together makes them all realize that no marriage is perfect. Meanwhile, Edna tries to help Ned’s children become more socially acceptable by changing some of the rules. Also: Patty (or was it Selma's) adoption of a baby girl. Speaking of which, whatever happened with Selma (or was it Patty) and her turning out to be a lesbian and getting married? Did that stick? I haven't watched this show since... probably the season when that happened. -------------------- "Pinkie's brain is kind of like a supersonic missile without a targeting system." - Creature SH

Wasn't that the episode where her wife turned out to be a guy in drag, and thus, status quo was reset by the end when she dumped him?
Or was there another episode later on with a more permanent marriage? |

^ No, you're right. As far as I can recall, she's still a spinster, and I believe the baby was adopted in an episode after that.

Here's a thing! Not only is The Simpsons not being canned, we're getting animated shorts screened before movies in theaters!
QUOTE "The Simpsons" shorts to play in theaters Fox Making Simpsons Shorts For Cinemas – First Trailer by Brendon Connelly What took them so long? Fox have released the first trailer for The Longest Daycare, a Maggie Simpson-starring short that is going to play in cinemas, in 3D, ahead of Ice Age 4. Nice to see it´s been hand drawn in the typical Simpsons style. You know, if this is funny, and more funny shorts follow, this could really rejuvenate people´s affections for the little yellow family. -------------------- |

If it's in lieu of commercials then fine, but if it just means the start of the actual film gets pushed back *another* 5 minutes, then I'm gonna get upset.

While I've wanted to see the return of theatrical shorts for ages, I'd much rather see them play classic Disney or Looney Tunes or something.

I love Pixar shorts, and I own most of them on Blu-Ray, but there isn't exactly a huge back catalogue of them to work from, and I doubt Pixar can crank them out at a consistent quality level that quickly. But there are literally decades of classic Disney shorts to work with, which I also almost entirely own (as entirely as possible, anyway) on DVD through the Walt Disney Treasures line.
I'd love to see Der Fuehrer's Face on the big screen, lol. This post has been edited by TM2-Megatron: May 23 2012, 09:05 AM -------------------- ![]() |
