Ralph Swagler, owner of Locals Barbecue in the same strip mall as the IHOP, said he saw a man wearing a red shirt and black shorts pull up outside the IHOP in a blue minivan.

Swagler said the man had a rifle. He shot and killed a man on a motorcycle, then walked inside the IHOP and started shooting.

Swagler said the man spent several minutes there, then walked back outside into the parking lot and began firing into the Locals Barbecue and an H&R Block in the strip mall.

“This happens in third-world countries, not here,” Swagler said.

My thoughts and well-wishes to everyone involved. What possesses a man to shoot up an IHOP?

My sympathies as well, but what's up with the third-world reference? Public shootings in America are (tragically) hardly new.

Not sure, I'm betting it's at least partially shock from having never experienced anything like that before.

That's... horrible. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-screamer.gif) My prayers to those who lost anyone in this massacre.

I have to say... my experience is, this happens in the USA most often. In the third world, when people shoot others, it's due to a war, hatred of another country/minority or simply to get food/valuables. In the USA, not a month goes by without me hearing about a story of another nutcase who shot people without any reason, or a kid in school going berserk. It was a really bloody weekend all over. Six shot here in Portland (no major injuries, at least), and 48 at least shot in NYC, with 10 dead.

Stay safe everyone.

Ya I saw the six shot the other day in the Oregonian. Any more it doesn't spark as big a flame in the news as it would of a decade ago it seems.

4 dead(including the gunman), 6 injured. 2 of the dead were National Guard in uniform. No motive released by the police yet.

Over at the Huffington Post, people are arguing either for more gun control or more people being allowed to carry guns because of events like this.

I commented that perhaps what we need instead of either of those is more mental health care for our citizens.

Because clearly the answer to everything is too much/not enough guns. Trying to treat the mentally ill is boring and icky.
