Glad to see everyone is pretty much in character from the comics. I don't know Azazel though. Huh. Wikipedia says he's the natural father of Nightcrawler; he did remind me of Nightcrawler with his powers and appearance.
Even Angel was in character to how she was portrayed in the comics, of what little they showed of her in the movie. Her development came of no surprise. There weren't that many surprises or twists if you know the comics except Havok not being Scott's brother as has already been discussed. Everything happens as you would expect it to happen with the only changes being done to condense the plot elements. The characters make their choices just as you'd expect them to. No obvious plot holes with earlier movies but then its been a while since I watched them so I'm probably missing something (other than perhaps Mystique's line in the original X-Men movie about being scared to go to school). No dogs having sex. No testicle references. The hero's mother didn't get high on drugs. Recognisable character designs from the comics (although adjusted for age). No black stereotypes... HIGHLIGHT to view: other than the token black guy of the group being the first to die Don't highlight that unless you've seen it. I thought we outgrew that one. Why can't more movies stay this true to the original source material despite mixing it up? Its good. No need to worry. This post has been edited by Bass X0: Jun 1 2011, 12:24 PM |

As an action movie, I kinda want to see it. As an XMen movie, yet again they have pissed me off by ignoring the true origin of the XMen. All they had to do was use the original five, but NOOOOO they had to go their own way and screw the whole thing up AGAIN! hug em, I'm done with the XMen franchise until somebody gets their head out of their ass and gives me the REAL XMen Origins.

You'd think that would bother you but it really doesn't when you're watching it.
It does mix up the origins as they were shown in the comics but also stays close to characterisation of the characters in the comics. So it gives us a new story with fresh characters but also enough familariity as well. It works. Since the story is about the early years of Charles and Erik, its good that Cyclops, Iceman, (male) Angel and Jean aren't in. Having Beast and Havok in doesn't feel that forced either although Hank's transformation is pretty quick and so is him coming to terms with it despite just wanting to look normal. My only complaint is minor - Angel has no conflicting thoughts once she joins Sebastian Shaw and happily fights her old friends without holding back (she pretty much becomes a non-entity once she leaves the good guys). Banshee and Havok don't seem to mind fighting and hurting her either. I would have liked a few lines between them on the beach about their respective choices. Watching The First Class, you'll forget all about the previous X-Men movies and Wolverine Origins. This is on a different level entirely.
Just give it a chance. Don't go in expecting a scene for scene retelling of the comic story and you'll be fine. Oh, and I quite liked the music from the bar scene with Erik, the pig farmer and the tailor early in the movie. This post has been edited by Bass X0: Jun 2 2011, 04:43 PM |

I saw it, thought it was brilliant. Well paced, well acted.
Yes it's not a true word for word copy of the x-men comics but then it doesn't matter, it's not following the ultimate universe either, it just borrows from them both and forges its own universe. The ideals and themes of the x-men are still in there, it's just been recrafted. In fact my only disapointment was the wire work during the fight between angel and banshee, it looked quite shoddy. Everything else. Perfect, I look forward to 2nd class. |

The movies aren't the comics, and shouldn't be bound to only following the comic continuity. Again, judge it based on its own merits, not because it changed the way the comics said it happened. |

It was fantastic!
Of course, the beginning was kinda stupid (kid Erik did the double helmet thing but wrong direction. You know what I mean) but then it much, much better (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) BTW, Riptide? Didn't he just twirl around and throw shuriken? This one is a weather manipulator. I thought he was the Hellion Slipstream revamped. -------------------- Oink!

Sorry, best I can give it is a "Meh, it was better than Wolverine: Origins", the best parts were the cameo's by HIGHLIGHT to view:
Hugh & Rebecca, I thought a few of the scenes were "alright", but if they wanted to do this, it should have been ten years ago..holding out for Cap, but only because I am a WWII junkie. This post has been edited by Dessl0ck: Jun 3 2011, 04:12 AM -------------------- The Once and Future Leader

I thought it was one of the better comic book movies to date. The actor who played Magneto stole the show. His nazi-hunting scenes were great.
On a side note: did anyone notice that Matt Murdock was shown during the first cerebro scene? There was a shot of a boy with large black glasses, who resembled the 'young Matt' from Daredevil, throwing a ball with amazement (ie. being able to see). Fox has the DD film license, so it isn't terribly unreasonable to imagine them throwing in the character. I was debating skipping the movie, sure that my knowledge of continuity would ruin the film for me. I was pleasantly surprised. I want to see more of young Xavier and Magneto. I just can't stand the fact that it doesn't even have Scott or Warren or Bobby or Jean in it. Then again I'm still pissed at how Scott was treated in the first three movies (X2 and X3 especially). He's the soul of the team not a damned afterthought. Out -------------------- Touch passion when it comes your way, it's rare enough has it is. Don't walk away by when it calls you by name. Well, this is Charles and Erik's origins, not Cyclops' and the others (except for Beast's).
By the time Cyclops appears on the scene, Xavier is supposed to be old, bald and in a wheelchair. This movie tells the story of what happens before then. I think its supposed to be a trilogy so we may see Cyclops' origins in a later movie. The writers of First Class would never do to Deadpool what the writers of Wolverine Origins did nor would they just kill off Cyclops like he was in an earlier movie. I have faith in them to continue making good X-Men movies. The only character they did neglect (although not treat badly) was Angel during the second half. Once she joined the bad guys, she stopped being a character with a personality. This post has been edited by Bass X0: Jun 3 2011, 01:43 PM |

Got back from seeing this about an hour ago. I really enjoyed it. One question, for those in the know: is this a reboot of sorts, or is it supposed to fit in with the other X-men movies? The way the movie played out seems to be at odds with the beginning of X3. Of course, I'd have no problem if X3 was erased from continuity (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-waspy.gif)

@ Delta.
Yeh it pretty much ignores X3 and Wolverine Origins. While a lot of people don't like X3, I don't mind it, it's certainly better than Wolverine, and while it does muck up a lot (Madrox, Juggernaught and the lack of speaking role for Colossus, not to mention killing off lots of characters in bitch like ways), it does do a lot right: (beast, the basic premise, Angel, a new altering line up is very in keeping with x-men). |

^^ The way I heard it was Fox has 2 more movies before the rights go back to Marvel for in-house.. that leaves The Wolverine, and...? As far as I know, so long as Fox is actually utilizing hte license (i.e. has at least one movie somewhere in development) they get to keep the license. Basically Marvel was super-stupid early in their movie career and just signed stuff away willy nilly, not seeing anything but dollar signs. Anywho, this was an excellent movie IMO. The casting was spot-on, the humor was good, and the story was interesting. Though it does introduce a bunch of continuity issues. HIGHLIGHT to view: 1. Emma Frost being an adult her, while "Emma" was in Origins Wolverine as a kid. 2. Magneto and Proffessor X make their split long before they recruit Jean Gray, seen in the third movie 3. Professor X is also paralyzed before he starts recruiting students, when we see he's still able to walk in X-Men 3. 4. Magneto had little to nothing to do with building Cerebro (which was important in the first movie as it allowed him to sabotage it, and in the second movie as it gave Stryker the information to move/build it. 5. While not a plot hole, I find Mystique going from how she is in First Class to how she is in the trilogy a little unbelievable. It's not like she and Charles left on bad terms even: there still seemed to be love there. Also, this isn't a continuity issue, but I really didn't get a sense that Charles and Erik knew each other long enough to develop a strong friendship: they were more comrades than friends. |

I saw it last night and I loved it. It was easily the best of any of the X-Men films thus far. Magneto was my favorite character through out the whole film. It was all very well acted.
