This scanner is capable of scanning 11x17 pieces and for those of us who draw or ink comic sized pages of art this would be a godsend! Only thing is I don't want to plunk down $170+ if its going to be crappy scans. Anyone use one of these personally or professionally? |

I thought for a second it was like the one I have here at work, but I was mistaken. Mine is a Microtek ScanMaker 9800XL.

I worked in an electronics shop in the past where they sold Mustek scanners and found them to have unreliable software and give rather grainy results with poor colour reproduction, they also had a high return rate compared to scanners by other manufacturers.

Yeah the reviews on that one all complain about the software, which admitedly is not modern and isn't for Win 7.

sadly Jake I don't think Scanner tech has been one of the priorities of late... you'd almost be better off just taking a picture with a good digital camera

If you don't mind spending the cash, you could do what dozens of our customers do on a regular basis and have it scanned at Officemax. 4 bucks for the first image, 2 bucks for each additional, and you can have them scan it at 1200 dpi, which is far more than most home scanners can practically match. -------------------- Rawr!

If you've got a version of Photoshop that has the photomerge ability (CS2 and up, I think), just use that. You can pretty much scan something in as many sections as you need, and put it all together with really good results. Doesn't matter if the peices you scan are not aligned perfectly, Photoshop will figure it all out. Pretty much negates the need for a large format scanner, unless time a major factor.

Ok just saw that this thread still has life. Ok to bring people up to speed I did indeed buy the Brother MFC-6490 large format scanner/printer and hoo boy am I ever glad I did. I missed the Amazon special of $199.99 but managed to snag it at my local Staples for $250. After a few days it went back up to the normal $300. This printer has been one of the best buys I've ever made in regards to art. It scans 11x17 perfectly, it prints out bluelines at 11x17, it's just amazing. And it does it all wirelessly. Just hook it up to your local wireless network and away it goes. It scans one of my 11x17 ink pages in about 32 seconds over wifi and produces a nice sharp 16mb file. Just amazing to someone who constantly had to piece together pages that size. If you are in need of a large format scanner guys this may be the one you should take a look at.

Remember, you get what you pay for. $170-$200 for an 11"x17" window scanner is dirt cheap, and thus probably won't be of very good quality. I use a Microtek Scanmaker 9800XL scanner It has a 12" x 17" window area, and a very high resolution. It's a professional quality scanner. I paid over $1100 for it back in 2003. IF you want a good oversized scanner, you're going to have to spend some good money for it. And the Scannmaker 9800 XL is a great one, though there is probably a more up-to-date version now. Amazon.com has them here new and used.
