QUOTE About two weeks ago we announced the San Diego Comic-Con 2010 Transformers: Prime schedule. And on that schedule, we learned that the talent behind the upcoming cartoon will be there to meet us. One such person is Jose Lopez; the Character Designer of Transformers: Prime. Till now Mr. Lopez was in a silence about his involvement. Now however, he has updated his blog to let us know that he’ll be at the SDCC2010 to give us a sneak peek of his work. "Hi everyone! Comic-con is just around the corner and this year its arriving with a big Bang! Late last year I started designing and art directing characters for the new TRANSFORMERS - PRIME show and we finally get to share a very cool sneak peek of what we got in the works. So please come to the panel, hang with us and let me know what you think of our new show. I'll post more info as I'm permitted but trust me this is truly an all star team. Also I'll be at my regular spot Table H9 in the small press area sharing my table with the amazing John Nevarez. Stop by and say hi, don't be shy, ask people around, I don't bite I believe John doesn't either, so you really have no excuse. I hope to see you there. I'll be back with more info. Lopez" Mr. Lopez also kindly told us what exactly we will find and who we will meet at this year's Comic-Con. 4:30-5:30 Transformers Prime on The Hub— The talent behind Transformers Prime, the new TV series from Hasbro Studios featuring a groundbreaking mix of 2D animation and CGI, will showcase exclusive footage and characters followed by a Q & A session in this can't miss panel! For Transformers it'll be "groundbreaking" if the combination doesn't look like crap.

Well, at least from the standpoint of Energon, the standard can only go up.
I hope. -------------------- All that I'm after is a life full of Laughter

It stills baffles me how Energon managed to be one year younger than Machine Robo Rescue and still fail CGI so hard.
Anyway. It can work. Clone Wars-like CGI with well textured backdrops. Same designers for both the TFs and humans to tie them together stylishly. Good face rigs. Wait and see before you react all silly. -------------------- |

Plus, there's the fact that the designs for this show are a lot sleeker and less boxy than Energon. One of Energon's problems is that the CGI models werre far too boxy to move convincingly. Cybertron rememdied this somewhat with sleeker designs, but... It seems Hasbro's trying to make the CG for this show really good.

Who's silly? I'm definitely not saying it's going to be terrible simply by virtue of blending 2D and CGI. It's just that the Transformers history of this mix has been a little short on that all important "blend" point. Energon COULD have looked great if it'd had a CGI budget higher than "two guys in a garage". Like you point out, good face rigs will go a heck of a long way, also characters that can move in a convincingly natural way.
(also if they use cel-shaded CGI, remembering to push the "scale" button will be good too.) --------------------

This is a good thing, really. If they do the same thing they did in Galaxy Force, with the TF's themselves being the only things in CGI, it will get around the limits of both CGI and traditional cell animation.

It's hard to get past just how bad most shows that have attempted this mix before have been, especially Energon. Add to that that it's being done by folks that have apparently never done a cartoon before and... eee... Hope stuff looks good on Thurs. Well Hasbro's putting enough effort behind it. They clearly want Prime to be big. That's something in its favor at least. -------------------- |

Its bad writing and dull dubbing that ruined Energon for me. I wouldn't have minded the animation being what it was if it had been an entertaining story to watch with enthusiastic appropriate voice acting.

We've seen what Prime Bumblebee looks like, it's obvious from his appearance that the CGI will be like Cybertron's, only better. |

Promo render doesn't equal show still.
Anyway, it can be done, and it can be done well. May I point to Futurame for good uses of CGI in conjuction with drawings? (Although, of course, CGI is used sparingly there.) |

Also, keep in mind that the average US produced cartoon has at least twice the per-episode budget of the average Japanese production. And the same goes for the production time as well. -------------------- |

I wonder if it'll be like, CGI animation with 2d parts for more actiony scenes or 2d humans with 3d robots.

As long as the characters and storyline are strong and enjoyable, the animation style really doesn't matter all that much.

I admit, the only reason I overacted is because of the previous track record when it comes to TFs and CG meets Hand-drawn. I'm betting it'll be done well, since the only thing that's really had me apprehensive about TF: Prime so far is Welker as Megatron.

And it's being animated in Japan on top of everything else!
As for the people doing the actual CGI...well... This post has been edited by Sprocket: Jul 18 2010, 05:08 PM -------------------- Derrick Wyatt is the single greatest thing to happen to Transformers design ever.
