I steer clear of TVTropes.

I feel that linking to someone else's writing on a subject instead of forming your own opinion is kinda detrimental to being a critic. Sure, there are tones of stereotypes and stuff, but overcategorization is the death of fun stories.

So I ignore TVTrope links.

hug TV Tropes. Just overanalyzing stuff for no reason. Everything's been done in some fashion, especially when you overcategorise it. Just because something fits into some vague definition of a cliche (even something extremely rare is a cliche on Tropes...) doesn't make it bad. I pity any writer who tries to avoid the prat falls of TV tropes.

I don't think the point of TVTropes is to call something bad. A common theme doesn't have to be hackneyed or cliché, but I think it's fun to notice them anyway.

Which is pretty much the same opinion as TVTropes. They just list them.

They also constantly mention that tropes aren't bad.

Writing something without using any of the tropes on TV Tropes would be like cooking without ingredients.

Personally, I think the idea of "TV tropes" cheapens the whole creative field by trying to categorize every little thing. Even if it does seem to be taken to extreme levels of self-parody.

The problem is when you get these people who come up to you and:

"Hey, that looks interesting."
"Yeah, it's my favourite show!"
"What's it about?"
"Oh, this, and that, and this!"
"Oh, sounds like a classic *TROPE* and *TROPE* with some *TROPE*"

Of course, some TropeRs are also tools. But that's true of anyone. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif)

I honestly could not fail to disagree with you more.

Seems TVTropes is suffering form a bad case of Hype Backlash.

I love TV Tropes. They basically take the analysis that all (script)writers worth their pay should be doing anyway and put it in clear easy-to-read wiki format. It's like Cliff Notes for the process of writing.

Plus it's fun going through their "Crowning Moment of" and "Nightmare Fuel" pages as a way to remember those, er, memorable scenes in various stories and discover new stories.

Plus their "Wild Mass Guessing" pages are shrines of entertaining self-aware fanwank.

Crowning Music is a great way to share good songs by name (and youtube links). I'm a troper, and all I can say is Overdosing On TV Tropes Will Ruin Your Life.
