These just cropped up on the US government patent and trademark site. Hasbro is applying to register the following trademarks...

Rom the Spaceknight for toys: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694074

Rom the Spaceknight for entertainment services (TV shows, etc): http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694073

Rom the Spaceknight for printed goods: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694075

Rom the Spaceknight for.. uh... I'm not entirely sure, but the category is normally used for video games: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694079

There are also four more applications that mirror these, but are just "Rom" instead of "Rom the Spaceknight".

Rom for toys: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694078
Rom for entertainment services: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694076
Rom for printed goods: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694077
Rom for (possibly) video games: http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=...;entry=76694071

For anyone who is confused, this is Rom.

For the love of CRAP, please let this somehow lead to an ESSENTIAL ROM.

Oh did this finally get figured out?

Last I heard Toy Biz wanted to use ROM in Marvel Legends but the trademark was tied up or no one knew who owned it or something. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-wildride.gif)

I'm betting the problem was that the comic was made to advertise the ROM toy, which was made by Parker Brothers, which is owned by Hasbro.

As such, shouldn't this be in General?

Rom's a comic character, so...

Also, cool. I guess. I don't really know Rom. At all.

lots of Marvel Fans, who have wanted to see the spaceknights resurrected in comic and toy form.

that, and Hasbro owns Marvel Legends, so could we see a ML Rom in the near future?

Here's hoping they can use the Dire Wraiths as well -- since Rom is pretty much useless without them.

My bet is someone wanted the film rights -- or Hasbro's looking to sell them. It seems like too much effort just for a Marvel Legends figure -- why would you even bother to untangle that legal mess without something as big as a film in the works? Not to mention all those trademarks -- computer game? print? Sounds like they're gearing up for a film!

Not a film where they're expecting an enormous amount of merchandising potential though -- or you'd expect even more Trademarks.

--Boltax.
(Maybe it'll be a Marvel/Hasbro joint venture... whatever the case, we need the damned wraiths.)

Dire wraiths might still be Marvel, as Toy Biz did a figure.

The Dire Wraiths were a Marvel creation, so there shouldn't be any sort of issue with them. I'm fairly sure they've made several appearances in other comics since Rom ended. (Fun fact: Dire Wraiths are magic Skrulls. True!)

Yeah, that's the problem though, innit?

HASBRO is registering these trademarks... but do THEY own the Dire Wraiths? The NAME Dire Wraith came from Parker Brothers... so there's a bit of legal ambiguity there. But what's the use of Rom, in terms of fiction, if he doesn't have the Wraiths? It makes it seem strange that they're doing these multi-media trademarks.

The Toybiz Dire Wraith figure was sculpted, but never actually came out.

http://www.actionfigureinsider.com/marxblog/?p=16

(Please ignore the excessive stupidity/lack of research in the article otherwise.)

Anyway, the Dire Wraiths were mentioned in the original promotion video that Parker Brothers sent to Marvel, meaning that they were the ones who came up with the concept of them (at least so far as "shape-changing evil magicians"). You can see that promo video here:

http://www.stonefoundationentertainment.com/rom.html

(It's actually pretty neat, in a late-70s way).

Of course, the Parker Brothers Dire Wraith toy never came out, either, so it may have been wildly different from the "true form" seen in the comics... it kind of makes me wonder if Marvel wasn't actually allowed to keep using the Dire Wraiths when their ROM license ran out, though.

Interesting. I guess the appearance of the space knights in Annihilation was no coincidence.
