So can a Star Wars fan help me out here? Who or what is that Imperial Trooper head based on? It looks like a mix of Clone Commander Bacara's, and a Snow Trooper's helmet.

That second guy... his altmode is from the original trilogy, but where's his head from?

I'm going to guess it's a heavily stylized Snowtrooper head. Nothing else really makes sense.

Looks like a very heavily modified snowtrooper mask. I've never seen anything that looks quite like that.

THough I do like how he appears to have upward-slanted eyebrows. He knows he's gonna die horribly. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-fire.gif)

Wow, looks like a bad kitbash attempt at a snowtrooper head mod or something. I'll be passing on that particular remold.

So how's the bomber? As interesting as the original images made him out to be?

Actually.... I'm wondering, since that's more like plant matter markings on the vehicle, not snow... if that's supposed to be an AT-ST pilot from Return of the Jedi.

Or I suppose it could be a stylized Clone Commander Bacara or whoever helmet, they have the flaps on the sides. Maybe they've pulled the design from one of those "middle period" tales, post-Order-66 but before the events of "A New Hope". Maybe it's something from Force Unleashed.

I haven't transformed the bomber yet, but it suffers from a design that needed a LOT better tolerances to stay together in vehicle mode. Grievous is an improvement over the original SWTF Grievous, but that's not a difficult feat. And the massive amount of ship kibble is made to look like his cloak, more or less.

---Dave, taking a break from the SWTFs to review bonus content on the Wal-Mart exclusive Iron Man DVD two-pack.

Edit: Okay, transformed the TIE Bomber. There's a lot of loose, floppy vehicle kibble, notably on the back and heels. The solar panels are attached to the forearms rather than the upper arms, so it's hard to get them out of the way. The hands are tiny. Those issues aside, it looks pretty good and the core parts hold together well enough.

I'd say that they're not really trying anymore, but that would imply that they ever did.

I want a couple TIE Bombers. Greivous is okay, I might get him but I doubt it. That new AT-AT looks horrible, the 1st one looked pretty bad but they managed to make it look even worse. And the black Emperor looks like a bad fan custom.

C'mon man, you gotta give them some credit. Death Star Vader is awesome! A little too small but still awesome. I love that thing.

TTK

They've been trying and succeeding all along, but as Transformers fans we can't see it. Somebody keeps buying the toys, or they wouldn't have lasted several years already. This would not have happened if they were just a gimmicky thing like Ops and Megs turning into SW craft.

I think they have also succeeded "artistically" as well as commercially, in a way we can't always see. They have tailored the aesthetic to the different franchise. These are vehicles that turn into robots that resemble their pilots, but which are also influenced by SW droid styling. You can REALLY see this in the AT-AT, and that one always seems to sell quickly.

This seems to be the same course Hasbro is following with the Marvel Crossovers, which have a heavily comic-influenced aesthetic.

FWIW, I'm far enough along to rate both as Mildly Recommended (still working on details). The TIE Bomber actually LOOKS good, but like Classics Galvatron needs significantly better engineering tolerances to make the ambitious design work. Or at least a few more pegs. Grievous, on the other hand, is a shellformer that never really aspires to be more. It's okay, but too backpacky.

Compared to the Marvel Crossover figures, the Star Wars stuff have been very unimpressive with rather ugly robot modes. I may get the Storm Trooper just for the AT-AT mode, but that is still daughtful.

I believe that head is one of Ralph McQuarrie's concept designs for the original Stormtrooper. I know I've seen it before, and that's the only thing I can think of offhand.

If not, then it's probably just their interpretation of a snowtrooper.

Yeah, I'd go with that.... especially because that's "forest moon of Endor" greenery rubbed all over it. So like you said, it's that one AT-AT from RoTJ that really doesn't do much (other than transport Luke to the landing station where he meets Vader).

Anyways, this is my favorite SW TF headsculpt so far. ^_^

Can someone post a link to images of the TIE bomber and Grevious? Even the Hasbro site doesn't list them.

Dave, did your Tie Bomber come with a pilot? I have mine opened up and transformed and I can't find the pilot anywhere. There's no picture of him on the box or in the instructions either, and I can't be certain that there's a placement for him in the plastic tray too.
