I picked up the first issue of Dynamite Comics' Voltron title today, to be met with this cover by Wagner Reis.

It's basically movie Optimus with tacked on Voltron parts. This is easily evident in the legs, which are Optimus all the way except for the blocky Voltron lion on the foreground leg. Furthermore, the chunks of Optimus' shoulder are left behind as part of Voltron's wing. Finally, Optimus' back-mounted fuel tanks are... Voltron's back-maounted fuel tanks, whereas Voltron normally has nothing on his back aside from wings and some pointy shoulder blades.

I think the image is swiped from this DOTM promo render, but something else might fit better (It might also be from the Sideshow Optimus Prime maquette, as the positions are more similar):

Those are Prime's legs. Is the guy really just that lazy?

Wow, that's so terrible that it's almost sad. Of course that Optimus promo render is awful too. Looks like his left arm is falling off.

Here's a quick image that points out all the swiped parts. Voltron's at least 50% Optimus. Bad start for a first issue.

That particular render has been around a lot longer than DOTM.

At any rate, that cover-art is crap, and apparently largely swiped, which is always a bad combo.

It's especially bad when a couple of the alternate covers are by Alex-freaking-Ross. But those aren't the ones my comic shop had.

Dynamite was also the same company that thought it was a good idea to give Pat Lee another job.

Swiping can be done o comic effect when done well but DAMN this is just bad art supported by a movie Prime endoskeleton.

A swipe and a homage cover are two widely, chasm deep separated things.

I've seen at least one swipe that made better use of the pose than the original art. I even submitted it to that guy and he posted it.
I wish I had art handy. It was a Captain America cover that my entire comic shop used to make fun of after I slapped a word bubble on it. Later I noticed it was used in an ad for Ugly Balls, themselves ripping off Mad Balls. The Cap cover was pretty dumb but the Ugly Balls swipe made the pose make sense.

True. But something like that is a like an entertaining ripoff movie. The stars need to align for it to happen and its very existence is dubious at best so it's not something to encourage.

I would say quite that. I haven't been enjoying it, but I AM very curious to see what the heck they are doing.

Well, the Voltron cartoon was narrated by Peter Cullen...

but yeah, Optimus' legs don't look very good there.

The combination of blocky Voltron pieces and the movie style detailing on the arms and legs is very jarring.

It's a really weird kind of lazy to me. Voltron really isn't that hard to draw. I'm no comic book artist, but we're talking about a pretty blocky, flat-panelled robot. I don't understand why the artist felt that more detail was needed. And when he realized he couldn't do it without copying, why didn't he just say, "Well, it didn't need it anyway."

It does make me wonder what a movie-styled Voltron would be like.

Much better than this, I imagine.
