I'm continuously baffled as to why IDW felt the need to fetch Shane "I made Riddler metrosexual!" McCarthy or Mike Costa for the main Transformers title when Nick was standing right there ready to deliver all the goods in terms of art AND story.

If we switched off between Furman, Mowry, and Roche, I could live as a happy fangirl.

He also seems to be the only artist outside Guido Guidi that's remembering that these robots are supposed to be expressive. Meanwhile, Don goes in the total opposite direction for God knows what reason...

What about EJ?

Su was good with the characters' bodies, but his faces often looked a bit flat and samey. (His humans are still far and away the best out of all of IDW's artists, though, IMHO.)

Does this mean we all need to start a fund to get Nick Roche on a trip to the United States so he can get drunk with Ryall and be given charge of the next direction of Transformers that way?

Ticking Prowl off will never get old. Never.

That preview is like good old times, fun and interesting while moving the story along. Prowl and Springer get distinct personalities without it being eye-rollingly obvious, and Prowl's internal narrative has a ton of neat details ("Springerism", heh). I really wish there were more comic writers out there who were fans of Transformers, or at least really familiar with them - it makes a big difference in how the characters are written, though I can't really explain how exactly.

I hope Nick Roche gets to work on the ongoing somehow, though I'd imagine trying to write and draw it would kill him.

I don't remember Grimlock ever getting physical with Prowl. The most Grimlock ever did was poke Prowl in the chest. Their arguments were always vocal rather than violent.

From what I've read of their interactions, it always seemed more like Grim was... Kind of hanging it over Prowl's head. That Prowl might be smarter, but Grim was bigger and tougher and could reduce him to metal shavings, so Grim just defied him because what're you gonna do about it? It was never 'Is this a sound course of action' but 'Will this piss off Prowl?'

Plus that period where he outranked him, to boot.

Anyone notice the image of a hand reflected on the windscreen of Kup's chest on the cover?

I wonder what that could symbolise.

Kup's old body's hand against the windscreen of his new Pretender shell.

Yeah, compare that to Springer and Prowl here - given the interaction during Spotlight: Kup, it seemed like Prowl has some rank over Springer.

It's kinda like Simon and Rossiu in the post-timeskip part of Gurren Lagann. Prowl's making the hard decisions for the better of everyone (Both in Spotlight: Kup and now), and Springer's the guy running on emotion here. Except the lines are more blurred on who's right and wrong here.

Nick Roche is the future of this franchise

Uh, why?
Don't get me wrong, I'd love for Roche to be the future of the franchise. I just can't see this turning into reality since IDW doesen't seem to do nothing but banking on other parts of the franchise or on the current most famous subculture.
(McCarthy's emo bulljive, G1 cartoon nostalgia, movie franchise inspired designs for the ongoing, etc.)
Roche writing is way to innovative & intelligent to ever be mainstreamized.
I mean look at that preview. 5 pages without explosions, angst or sex jokes.

Well, I say vote with your wallet. I haven't bought a comic in years, and I'm thinking about heading up to the comic shop on Wednesday to buy this. And plan to do the same for the Wreckers mini he plans to do.

Don't get me wrong, I will. But even if we buy 3 copies of each number of every tf comic written by roche, they'll never, NEVER sell as much as bay's idiot sexist stuff, McCarthy's emo comics that are so sad that you feel intelligent by reading them or '85 nostalgia, because while roche can please only people who actually care about the transformers, those other things also please american pie fans, 13 year old emo kids, people who only watched the cartoon when they were kids, and the average joe who just wants some quick enterteinment.
(I don't hate these people mind you. Well I kinda hate emo kids but that's not the point. I just don't want to sound like an elitist nerd who hates everybody who doesen't appreciate transformers. None of my friends actually gives a jive about transformers anyway. I'm just saying that generic or influenced by other parts of the franchise comcs will always sell more than well made transformers all-new comics.)

This is true.

But my money's on Roche becoming the big breakout IDW star like Don was with Dreamwave.

His Wrecker's run will reinforce the fact that he can be trusted with an ongoing series, and then based on that success he'll be given say a six-issue run on the main series, and then IDW will just let him run with the ball.

You know, I think you're right.

It takes a special kind of writing excellence to make the guy being punched in the face feel like the party in charge of the scenario.
