It seems like alicorns are very rare but not as unique as we assumed. Maybe Luna and Celestia are just very good at magic and came up with some kind of anti-aging spell?

I've kinda thrown about the theory that only Celestia is immortal and Luna was just in stasis while imprisoned in the moon for 1000 years. Its possible Celestia purposefully made herself immortal after imprisoning Nightmare Moon so that she could play out her Batman gambit to save Luna to the very end.

Similar to how I rejoyced when the six previously-chosen-ones staff of main characters failed to solve the problem this time around (While still giving their best, obviously).

This was one of my problems with the episodes.

No matter how much publicity or toys are focused on Shining Armor and Cadance, the mane 6 are, well, the MAIN SIX!. They're the main characters of the series, and it should be them, not guest characters, who save the day in the end. Cadance and Armor's union should weaken the bad guys, and give the 6 (or at least Twilight) the opening to pull out the win*, because that's what series main characters do..not sit around and let the guests beat the bad guys.
Kills suspense. If done this way, you know they'll solve the issue. This way... Not so much.

Helps in keeping the series alive, really.
QUOTE(Zecora @ Apr 23 2012, 09:25 PM) *
So... Any theories on Cadence clearly aging at a normal rate while Luna and Celestia are still immortal? Apparently their immortality is not necessarily related to their Alicorn status as originally assumed.
* Growing up at a normal rate.

We haven't seen her actually growing old in the Granny Smith sense, now have we?

So, maybe they hit a certain age then stop aging/growing?

Or it could just be that she was born relatively recently, and is subject to the "age normally until maturity and then freeze at your physical peak forever" brand of immortality that's frequently seen in fiction; an example being the Ba'Ku in Star Trek: Insurrection.

But of course, if that's the case, I doubt she'd have married Shining Armor only to watch him age and die.

Is it wierd how I started emphasizing with the villain when she started singing that this evil plan was part of some childhood dream of hers? Makes me wonder what happened to her back then.
As I noted earlier. She's a good and caring queen to her own people - the changelings. Their interests are just, unfortunately, not the same as the ponies' interests.

Her childhood dream was to provide her poor, starving, and despised by ponies people with ample love to consume to make them strong and healthy changelings. All those years, she worked tire- and selflessly to make this wish of hers, this desire of her entire species come true. Only to be foiled in the last moment, by pampered, bourgeoise ponies who never starve like the changelings do all too often, who enjoy all the benefits of civilisation, who spend their time using magic to manipulate their environment to suit their needs, and otherwise go and party all the time. And who'd never, ever voluntarily share even the slightest bit of their love with the poor changelings.

Poor Chrysalis (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-screamer.gif)

Even psycho Queens were cute at some point.

Proves that the writers aren't stuck, they don't need to pull out any clichés, or any other such nonsense.

When did winning by the power of love stop being a cliche?

Just because your immortal doesn't mean you're never going to fall in love. What crueler fate could there be then to be alone for all eternity? It is better to have loved and lost then to have never loved at all.

You know, the more I think about it. The more my opinion changes for this finale. I still think it's good & probably the best out of the two-parters we've had. But in the end it was mostly flash, with no real substance.

About 90 minutes to 2 hours of sword fighting immortals and dying loves.

Yeah, they seem to be slipping more alicorns in beyond just the royalty. So I guess a good number of them exist, just not as plentifully as the other pony types.

Either that or this was a layout/animation error:

Further thoughts, upon watching it again:

I'm impressed how well-paced this episode was. That was one of the big problems with "The Return of Harmony": the resolution was pushed way back to the end and felt rushed. In this one, even though the villain didn't even reveal herself until the very last few seconds of the first half, and the second half had to squeeze in everything else including two songs, everything fell into place perfectly.

And as far as characterization, hoo boy, that last scene in part one. I could really feel the shame and disgrace that Twilight was feeling as her brother and her mentor angrily walked out of the room. Even knowing that she would turn out to be right very shortly. That was some heavy stuff that you don't really ever see on a kids' show.

If I had any doubts about McCarthy being qualified to take over as showrunner next season — and I certainly did have doubts — after seeing the job she did on this finale, I think she's proven that she's more than up to the task.

Or the higher-ranking non-unicorns on the Royal Guard wear fake horns as part of their helmets.

I'm able to go with 'rank' horn on their armor. a solid metal spike on the head of a horse ..kinda a useful think when they don't have hands.

and honestly Being that Celestia can fly... having Pegasi being her top guardsman makes sense.

and truth be told - I think equestria is beyond racism at this point, since Shining Armor was apparently even ranked above Big C's personal guard.

and like everything pony - it also stands to reason that they would be colour matched to the pony

now though I kinda need to bring up that there weren't any Mares in the royal guard ... hmm?

Well they're typically presented as the stereotypical stoic British soldiers you often see in fiction, and how often are those female?
