So as I've mentioned, my son is a brainslaved fanboy for Rescue Bots and I of course have been watching with him.

And I'm finding myself very surprised and a bit puzzled by how non-"kiddie" it is. I'd really expected something like Dora or Umizoomi, yet instead we have a serialized plot structure and normal, even sophisticated dialogue. Heatwave once said "I've depleted my internal water reserves," like it was nothing and that's just language that the diaper crowd is supposed to be able to follow. Every episode is full of winks and double-references for adults too.

It really "watches" more like ordinary Transformers - a show for ~10-year-olds - except that it's rendered in a soft palette and there's no violence.

I'm curious about the intended audience, how well the show is doing, and if the creators did anything in their scriptwriting workshops to distinguish it from Prime on a grade / grammar level.

I think that the secret to writing a good show for kids is writing a good show, period. Talking down to the audience seriously undercuts the staying power. So it would be a surprise if Rescue Bots was enjoyable for all ages. (Personally haven't seen it)

Yeah, Rescue Bots is a good show for kids because it doesn't talk down to them. It uses words they wouldn't know, hopefully so they'll explore them. Plus if it keeps the parents' attention, it's more likely they'll want to watch with, increasing the chances it gets watched at all.

A lot of what we see in Rescue Bots is what might be considered a "parental bonus", such as the absolutely absurd number of movie references during "The Invasion of Griffin Rock." It's there to keep the parents entertained, but if the kids catch on then more power to 'em.

Between this, and the current iteration of MLP, I'm certainly applauding Hasbro's approach to children's entertainment.

I agree on how well done this show is. It's completely blown away all my expectations and has officially usurped Prime as being the superior show in my eyes.

Now, a truly kiddie TF cartoon would be something like the four-episode Go-Bots cartoon. While that was still a bit entertaining, it was definitely aimed more at the PBS Kids/Nick Jr. age range.

"Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up." -- C.S. Lewis

I think the target audience doesn't realize that stuff is going over their heads. You don't HAVE to have the complexity for them, but it doesn't bother them as long as some fun stuff happens on the screen.

It does seem like a mismatch to the toys, which is geared towards kids who can't even talk yet.

Who else here is thinking that, depending on how Tim Curry portrays Dr. Morocco, this show may or may not get a better edge with this Saturday's two-parter? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif)

Rescue Bots has been lacking in disturbingly erotic musical numbers as of late.

Yeah, the few Rescue Bots episodes that I watch are superior to all Prime season one.

Hmmm... Most three year old kids can talk. But I agree with the mismatch. The toys seems to be for much younger kids than the show. I would like to see the Rescue Bots characters with articulations, maybe we can have Prime versions of Chase, Boulder, Heatwave and Blades.

I actually suggested that very idea to Aaron Archer at BotCon last month. Not that I expect much to come about form it anytime soon, though. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-trant.gif)

I would snatch up articulated versions of Blades and Heatwave pretty quickly, myself.

The first rotf Evac is pretending to be Blades as we speak.

In fact, Boulder is the only one whose doesn't even have a close analogue in other lines. Maybe ill have to work some magic on a voyager bulkhead.
