Out of all the Pinkie-centric episodes we've had, I think this one's my favorite. I, too, thought the song was a little long at first, but it's growing on me. Yay, Richard "Rhinox, Tankor, and the suddenly-British Vector Prime" Newman! RD is totally hardcore egghead now, and Snowglobe Derpy is best pony. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif)

Good episode overall, but, I'm hankering for a Fluttershy episode soon.

Scoots needs an episode. I keep saying it but its still true. She not only has not had a episode revolving around her but even in the episodes that involve the CMC she barely is of note. There are background ponies who have gotten episodes and still nothing for Scoots.

Ah..rare misprint edition. Shows what kind of friend Twilight is to loan it out.

Yeah, I'm inclined to agree that Scoots needs some focus. Apple Bloom (in particular) and Sweetie have both had numerous chances to shine, and we've even met the latter's parents, which accounts for where she is when not staying with Rarity; and also why Rarity hasn't yet been driven to drink, lol.

But in Scootaloo's case, it's getting harder not to just substitute in a fanfic background for her, 'cuz I've read a couple interesting ones.

Ok, watched the episode.
Liked the character of Cranky, if only for the fact that he was not overly cheerfull, also nice to see more of the non pony residents of ponyville, the cows (well, a cow) are back, and we now have two donkeys (are they a minority in equestria? assume so, do they have their own part of the world where they usually live like zebras?), also great to see Zecore come to town for once (sure, no doubt she comes more often, but we never see her).
Also, loved how Rainbow Dash was, once again, completely right, and brutally honest.
For the most part, well done episode.

Now, the bad part.
Pinkie was almost my least favorite pony in mane 6, i never really warmed to her like the others, but she was ok in small doses, and after "Party of One" she felt like something of a tragic figure instead of just a joke character.
But after this episode, i'm actually close to hating her, the way she acted, grabby, annoying, messing with other peoples stuff, having no any kind of forethought, she just came out as a completely insensitive bunghole when dealing with Cranky.
And i also hate the final lesson, not that it's a bad lesson as such, but it still rubs me the wrong way, as the message seems to be
"if someone does not want to be friends with you, well bugger that, you can force them become one if you keep annoying them long enough."
And that does not sit well with me, sure, it was not what was meant, nor probably what other people will come out with, but as a person who gets easily annoyed with people who won't leave me in peace, i can't help but sympathise with Cranky, and feel deep burning hatred towards the way Pinkie acted, which probably colors my view.

Yes. We need 'moar' Fluttershy. And Rarity. And I'd take a Scootaloo episode. But Fluttershy above all.

I have to admit, I tend to be a person that likes my peace and quiet (at times) as well. But even so, I've never really taken issue with Pinkie's character in that respect. Maybe because she's like no real-life person I know in how ridiculously pleased she is simply to see someone else happy (normally people's reasons for bothering me when I was planning to just relax aren't quite so complimentary, lol). I normally try to judge people by their intentions rather than any unforeseen or unintended impact on me, and as far as her intentions go Pinkie is about as beneficent as you can get. But her personality allows for her to go overboard fairly easily, maybe even more so if she's nervous, and that's usually when disaster will strike, lol (in this case, Cranky's scrapbook was the victim). It actually seemed like Cranky was warming up to her (just a bit) prior to that incident.

It's lucky there's no creature in real life that can make this face,

(IMG:http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/i/2012/049/5/d/pinkie_sad_face_vector_by_termi92-d4q5ksi.png)

... because if there were it would be game over for us all.

Game over, man! Game over!

There are actually several lessons to Celestia that don't seem to be quite right. The Pinkie Sense ep (just accept the some things, don't investigate), the Baby Cakes ep (don't ask for help, give up)... I wonder if Twilight or the other Ponies get feedback from Celestia ala 'you got it WRONG!' or something. Except for Applejack 'I didn't learn nuthin'" lol!

Speaking of Celestia, (from what Nayuki wrote, sorta, haha) I suppose donkeys don't get cutie marks or any other animal cuz they are not Celestia's chosen people. Is she responsible for the magic of the marks appearing? Ponies get to discover what they are worth and what role they would play in Canterlot and the pony world while the others are just... cattle and some such, lol. Dunno about the donkeys really but Zecora has got to have a cutie mark.

There were a lot of great things about this episode, the song, the felt animation, so much continuity.

...but it never came together to form a great episode.

All-in-all I think I'd have to say this was my least favorite episode so far. Not just of Season 2 but overall.

I love Pinkie Pie, she's magical, though the world in her head doesn't quite match up with the real world. The ep could have easily been longer, it seemed a bit rushed at the end but I absolutely loved what there was of it.

I think people are missing the point of the ep. It wasn't that Pinkie was overwhelming and bullying (well she was, and learning to dial it back was part of this), it was that Cranky had given up on life and completely withdrawn himself from everyone, when if he had just been a bit more open at the very beginning he could have sorted everything out and made himself happy. He and Pinkie are two sides of the same coin, as it were.

Sometimes life is depressing and you let it get you down, but you need to power through with bloody-minded perseverence or you'll never find what you're looking for.

Searching the entire country....for decades...doesn't count as "bloody-minded perseverence"?

I can't really fault Cranky. He gave it the old college try. Bad luck that the last place he checked (or decided to give up at) was the one that held what he was looking for.

I'm reminded by the above of my reaction to "Luna Eclipsed." It looks very much like Pinkie Pie is really being a jerk. In a sense, she is. But it's more like her empathy is misguided. She understands the unhappiness that both Luna and Cranky felt, but she makes the critical mistake of trying to fix it as if they were her. As a result everypony she's tried to "fix"--including Twilight in S01E01--just ends up ticked off at her.

So the character development question of this episode is did Pinkie really learn something at the end? The letter to the princess, and her backing off when Cranky and Matilda make it clear they want some time to catch up, do sort of imply that. But the proof will be in the continuity.

Really loved this episode, especially in some small details carried from previous episodes and and references made to previous episodes as well (reading Rainbow).

I noticed that too and liked it, a lot of other cartoons don't pay attention to the chronological order of it's episodes. Like in the case of Darkwing Duck (liquidnator) and Batman The Animated Series (Scare Face), both fought villains then ten episodes later were the episodes the heroes were first introduced to those villains, like they time traveled or something.

Well, zebras aren't ponies either, and Zecora seems to have a cutie mark. Although it's rather abstract, and may be something else entirely.

---Dave

It's never said that it's a cutie mark... it could just be some kind of tribal marking that's common in her native land or something. Zebras are certainly mysterious.

Once again, proof of pony superiority but equality in society.

Since s02 started, they are trying to move as far as possible from the "lesson thingie" in the series, because they (the concept) outlived itself already. I thought it was obvious.

Yeah, I thought that whole lesson thing would of dried up after season one, but it is actually the mcguffin of the story.

There's no reason to believe that, since Cranky Doodle was looking for one specific donkey, that being Matilda.

Personally, I like British slang; it seems classier, lol. The 'f' word is filtered here anyway, so it would've ended up being "hug that". By now, most regular posters probably have a mental filter in place that converts "hug" back to the original word while reading...

... needless to say, this can (and has) sometimes caused awkward/amusing misunderstandings in both this and every other section of The Allspark.
