QUOTE From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.” When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse. Oscar® nominee Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) is directing “Pacific Rim” from a script by Travis Beacham (“Clash of the Titans”). Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Mary Parent are producing, with Callum Greene serving as executive producer. The film stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s “Sons of Anarchy”), Idris Elba (“Thor”), Rinko Kikuchi (“The Brothers Bloom”), Charlie Day (“Horrible Bosses”), and Ron Perlman (the “Hellboy” films). The ensemble cast also includes Max Martini, Robert Kazinsky, Clifton Collins, Jr., Burn Gorman, Larry Joe Campbell, Diego Klattenhoff, and Brad William Henke. I may have to camp out at the Theater for a week. A week after it opens, that is. Hope they don't mind the smell (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-kicker.gif) . Smells like a weird Voltron treatment to me. Only in the Battling Giant Monsters, its much more like Mecha anime like Big O, Eva, Dual, etc -------------------- ***Signature removed by Staff due to size restrictions. Please keep to 500X200 images and text included.***

Smells like a weird Voltron treatment to me. Well, "giant robots fighting mysterious monsters" is the most common mecha trope. Gundam and so forth are well-known war stories, but a good chunk of titles, especially the more old-school ones tend to skew towards "strange giant creatures from the *whatever* dimension". It's also more common in shows that skew towards the "super" end of the spectrum. I won't say that that sort of shows have poor writing...but they do tend to be more about the main robot showing off on a bunch of interchangable enemies. Hopefully this film is more than just super robot porn. -------------------- Don't fail to see Nyarlathotep if he comes to Providence. He is horrible — horrible beyond anything you can imagine — but wonderful. He haunts one for hours afterward. I am still shuddering at what he showed. |

Well, one of the main mechs in the Heavy Gear RPG (and the short-lived cartoon tie-in) is the Jaeger. But Heavy Gear is more of a ripoff of Armored Trooper Votoms than of any of the Super Robot shows.

What I meant was this sounds like what Hollywood would come up with as Voltron treatment in that it's pretty distant from Voltron outside of the very basics yet missing key components such as the Lions.
