QUOTE(Kotaku)
Checking in on Activision's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, I chatted for a bit with producer Jason Ades, who explained the sad business truth behind the lack of a Generation One Transformers video game.

While the Revenge of the Fallen game contains numerous references to the original Transformers series, with Aerialbots, Protectorbots, episodes of the cartoon, and a couple of unlockable G1 skins for multiplayer, we won't be seeing a G1 game any time soon. Why? Because there isn't enough demand.

Despite the large and vocal group of G1 fans, a group that I consider myself a part of, Activision doesn't consider that enough to launch a project based on the series. Unless Hasbro does something huge with the original toys and cartoons, that's not likely to change any time soon.

It's a sad truth of the video game industry - there is a distinct lack of willingness to take chances. That's one of the reasons Activision dropped Ghostbusters...why make a game without a major movie release to coincide with it?

Ades put things into perspective for me, pointing out that the first Transformers movie video game, despite being a giant pile of suck, sold millions of copies. People today just aren't as familiar with the origins of the franchise to gamble on the nostalgia factor alone.

Perhaps the release of Atari's Ghostbusters game will change that, and publishers will be more apt to look to the past for big name titles.

This also seems to indicate that whatever High Moon is working on for Activision, it isn't a Generation One Transformers title. Let the sadness ensue.

I demand Activision stop hassling EA over Brutal Legend. Activision apparently don't give a damn about what people want.

It's not really that surprising. I would like to have one, but it's not a MUST HAVE thing, so I'm happy with games based on whatever the current series is.

And I'd imagine that most of the fandom probably doesn't care THAT much for a G1 game. While there may be those who are very vocal about it, I doubt it's enough to really make that much of an impact.

I have to agree with this. Outside of the fandom, I don't think there would be much warrent for such a game. And the fandom isnt big enough to really justify it.

I had a choice between the PS2 Transformers Armada game or the PS2 Transformers G1 game made for the Japanese market.

I chose to import the Japanese G1 game. It was a horrible, horrible mistake.

From now on, I don't care which robots are in the games; Armada, Animated or Movie. I just want to play a game that doesn't suck so hard the universe collapses in on itself.

Does that include the possibility of a Classics Style video game?

I'd swear I once played a Transformers game on the Commodore 64, but it was so long ago I can't remember if it was real or a dream.

It's real.

I just wish it wasn't.

I merely carry the message.

The fact I agree with it does help, though. It was a chore to play, which is why it got returned rather sharply. Sadly, I couldn't enjoy the voice work, because it was behind a large pile of horrific gameplay.

I just think that they haven't found the right formula for a TF game yet.

I would so line up to play a G1-based RPG and/or strategy game. Something with a good story, rather than just an excuse for giant robot battles. (Not that there's anything wrong with giant robot battles, mind you, but it seems kind of a waste just to essentially release a fighting simulator or platformer or shoot-em-up or whatever with TF skins.)

I don't really get it, there are a lot of video games that come from nowhere, with characters and licenses that people don't already know, and build up a lot of pre-release hype by being well done. These don't always necessarily sell a bajillion copies, but that doesn't mean they're not worth doing. Established, successful franchises such as Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Resident Evil, Halo, Final Fantasy, and others didn't get there by only making games because they had movies to push.

I think Activision is really underestimating the nostalgia and popularity of the overall Transformers brand. It's a property that has a lot of shelf presence in different venues, and has really come into the public mind more than ever in the past few years.

I did enjoy the movie game but it wasn't a patch on the Armada game. Even if I wasn't a TF fan, it's still one of the best games I've played. The cut scenes blew me away and the level of exploration was fantastic. 5 years later, I still find I go back to it on occasion. They actually took one of the worst versions of Transformers and elevated it to amazing heights.

You haven't lived until you play the Tidal Wave level. Such a pity they didn't make the Energon sequel.

I'd love a G1 game but it would have to be done by the Armada crew who unfortunately no longer exist.
