Thread necromancy! One more question for McFeely (or any UK allsparkers): will the official set work in american DVD players, or a PS3? This set: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Image:RiD_Box_Set_1.jpg Any help would be great! I doubt it would work in a PS3 without having to hack it, and then you risk totally ruining your $300 machine. I have the Australian Takara sets from Madman, they are in PAL and they work in my Sears brand dvd player. But they are also regionless. In truth, it's not the dvd player you have to worry about, it's your tv. If your tv can't process the PAL signal it won't matter if your dvd player will play it or not. Also keep in mind that the UK dvd's will have region 2 encoding. Most newer tv's have no problem with the PAL format, but if your tv is older you may be S.O.L. -------------------- |

My TV is only a few years old: a Sony Bravia.
I'm curious if any US-based allsparkers have the official maximum entertainment/JETIX set, and if they do, what they play it on. -------------------- "I am stronger than you know."

I think I spotted a bootleg set at NYCC last year, but obviously, that's no good.

in my experience collecting anime from malyasia there are a few things to look out for
1> number of disks The number of disks for a series varies but most anime is between 4-6 episodes per dvd-9 disk. so a 56 episode series is normally on 11-13 disks. Most Malaysian dvds are compressed down to 3-4 dvd-9 reducing the quality of the final image quite a bit. Doing this creates multiple compresion artifacts and blocky images. 2> The Malaysian classification seal This seal means very little in the long run as the content may still be of rubbish quaility visually but it does show that it may have been released at retail rather than a full on bootleg release. 3>Check other companys product Some Malaysian dvds are complete copies of previosly released sets (UK/US) with different artwork. Check to see if it has been release before and if so how many disks where used. If the episode to disk ratio matches another release it most likely a rip with extra subtitle or audio tracks addded 4>Language If you are looking for the series in english you need to check that the set being sold has an english audio. Some series are dubbed into the native language and have the english removed. If the series you want to watch is in japanese and you need the english subtitles then steer clear of Malaysian dvds as 9 times out of 10 the English subtitle track is barely understandable. Malaysian dvds vary wildly on quailty but the best guideline is the disk to episode ratio as that should give you a better idea of the quality of the set. So far iv had a few malaysian transformers dvds.My superlink sets have the seal but the subs suck and the episodes are badly compressed but on the complete opposite end is their cybertron set which is vastly superior to the american set in quality as it has all the episodes spread 4 to a dvd-9 disk and 5.1 and 2.0 audio. -------------------- TF Raw!! According to TF Wiki Cybertron did get a legit set in Malaysia. Could that be the one you bought?

This set: http://tfwiki.net/wiki/Image:RiD_Box_Set_1.jpg Any help would be great! It's R2 encoded, so it's not going to play in an American player unless yours is a multi-region player, or you can crack it (most players have some kind of manufacturer's code you can punch in and reset the region with, search it's make and model online). I don't think you can do that with PS3s. This post has been edited by Chris McFeely: May 20 2012, 10:11 AM -------------------- |

Yea thats the one i have and its prob the best dvd set for a English language transformers series in terms of overally episode quaility and the box art is alot better imo. I got mine before the US set was out so i was a bit shocked when the US set was compressed to 7 disks and the 5.1 was removed. Before it was released as a set, the 13 discs were released individually too.
And the box art for them were very nice. And yes, the quality of the Cybertron DVDs are the best of all Malaysian releases. -------------------- |

I'm guessing the high quality has something to do with them being legit.

I think one of my DVD players can play PAL, but my main player is a PS3, so I'll have to do some research on that manufacturer's code. -------------------- "I am stronger than you know."
