Omg, Depry speaks! XD I do love it but was expecting a more high pitched voice like the fan dubs on YouTube.
I love it how AJ said "Time to get the heck out of dodge!", I lol'd. I wonder if anyone outside of the country not familiar with old west stories would get that reference. -------------------- I find you to be a valuable member of the community. ... That...makes sense. Your theory is fairly well thought out, and definitely sounds like it could work. Holy crap! That's very haunting. I must fav that! That just replaced my other Luna fav. |

There's something strange I noticed on a repeat viewing that I don't believe anyones commented on yet.
In the crowd scene at the beginning of the episode while Applejack is giving her speech, the camera briefly focuses on Dinky, who is standing between Golden Harvest and some gray adult male Unicorn with purple hair I don't think we've seen before. Dinky looks up at the Unicorn while two adult ponies look at her and smile. Slightly later on in the scene where everyone is sending Applejack off at the train station, we see the same Unicorn talking to Golden Harvest in the foreground. Other than Bon-Bon who consistently standing next to Big Mac in almost every shot for some reason, they are the only background ponies present in this scene. Then as the train leaves the station, the camera pans over Golden Harvest and Dinky riding in the car in front of Applejack. I was wierd to see this kind of consistent background narrative going on. Edit: Seriously, Bon-Bon was there with the main group, the apple family and the Mayor in every shot. She even chases after the train with everyone else as it leaves. What was she doing there? If she's actually there to support Applejack, she's come a long way from her rude "And you are?" comment to Rarity in season one. Edit2: And she's the only background pony other than the extended Apple family at Applejack's welcome home party! This post has been edited by Zecora: Jan 22 2012, 12:08 AM |

I mentioned the Carrot Top & Dinky on the train scene earlier, but related to the fact both are connected to Derpy in fanon. No idea about the Unicorn; but apparently some fans are going with him being Dinky's father.
EDIT: Also, Carrot and Dinky were seen together during Nightmare Night. She was the one consoling Dinky when all the kids got upset about Luna "cancelling" the holiday. Oh right and guns are cannon now according to RD. unless someone has another fancy history lesson on the word gun to try and retcon them out again like they did with tank bullet and canon The show is written in English. The language has some idiomatic expressions that refer to firearms, but which don't actually have anything to do with guns. I really don't find these particular kinds of phrasing choices terribly fertile ground for overanalysis, because they have more to do with the English-speaking audience than the world of the show itself. |

Have to question Applejack's representation of Honesty too. She wasn't being truthful, even wording technicalities. On her secret, haha, if it wasn't a kids' show, I'd have said she was hiding her pregnancy, lol. Ok, that wouldn't have been a laughing matter. Before her telegram, I thought maybe she's have met a stallion while competing that she liked. For an AJ episode though, she wasn't really in it. Lol on the stagecoach chase and when she thought she lost them.
What's the I Love Lucy reference? Not my generation. Lmao on Pinkie! From the late surprise, the bathroom break, the use of her as a threat, to her unholy terrorness of the pinkie promise, wow, she was crazy hilarious! Cool for her giving that guy a piece of cake too. Er did she really say 'rarity catch me?' I didn't catch what she said. I saw pics of Pinkie as Deadpool but is that chimichanga cherry stuff really a fan reference? I collected Deadpool up to Joe Kelly's run but I don't really recall the chimichanga stuff. Was it during Fabian's Cable and Deadpool issues? I don't even recall when the Bea Arthur stuff happened. Needs more Big Mac. I can't complain about Derpy since I don't know enough of her fandom background. -------------------- Oink!

Very fun episode. Until the end, I was under the impression that AJ was paying off a bet that she made with Cherry Jubilee. Having given the pep talk from the entire town about how she'll win the blue ribbons at the rodeo, she might have bitten off more than she could chew. Not so much about the blue ribbons, but her pride in coming home without the money was the driving force in her judgement. Her partial lack of honesty was incidental to what AJ thought was doing the right thing. Her stubbornness again cropping up (pun intended) as her biggest flaw.
Lots of great moments for Pinkie, RD and of course AJ. More pouting from Apple Bloom and a crying Big Macintosh was great. Using what appears to be Lauren's original concept art of AJ as the photo the others were showing to try and find her. Fluttershy stopping the cart to avoid the bunny got a laugh out of me. Oh, yeah and I think a background character got some lines or something. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-arcee.gif) I was expecting a season finale down the line where Derpy would finally get a line at the very end or something like that, not this, and definately not the name drop. Good for her. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) Fero, here's the "I Love Lucy" reference: http://www.tvguide.com/News/My-Little-Pony...eo-1042050.aspx Ya-hoo! great ep this week! One of my favorites from S2 so far. Keep 'em coming! Mike "E" This post has been edited by Edwin: Jan 22 2012, 01:48 AM |

Derpy was perfect, if you ask me. It's okay if she sounds "dumb", some people just are, and aren't bad folks, Forrest Gump, anyone?
The only way this could have been better is if she got put with Carrot Top or Dinky. The rest of the episode was brilliant, plenty of Pinkie antics and lots of great lines and gags. I really liked this episode. -------------------- QUOTE I'm bad at puns and not much good at anything else! |

Though I highly doubt its an intentional fan nod as chimichanga is a fun word to say and worked with the cherry jokes. -------------------- "Some people collect other characters like Jazz or Hot Shot and its encouraged, but I stockpile Cybertron Crosswises and that makes ME the strange one."

Have to question Applejack's representation of Honesty too. She wasn't being truthful, even wording technicalities. You have to also take into account the flaws of the character. AJ is honest to a fault, but she's also incredibly prideful to the point of being stuck on herself. She made a promise to the town and when the world didn't allow for her to achieve it one way, she set out to do it another way. She saw herself as a failure and didn't want that to follow her home. Also: guardian prime said the word "cannonization" on the first page... and I've played way too much saints row of late: now all I picture is derpy getting beat down. -------------------- |

Derpy, as a character was such a beautiful nod to the fandom/community. A kind, fun and helpful character with a cute voice. I am so happy to have seen her speak, I hope she gets more speaking roles in the future. I for one look forward to know more of her.
Thank you Studio B and affiliates. Though I DO hope they keep her on as an easter egg. Looking for her in episodes has been fun (kinda like the waving snail in Adventure Time). Derpy's role hasn't changed. She's still our 'easter egg' character. I hope this doesn't mean today's episode was a one shot of Derpy talking. That would be pretty sad ): This post has been edited by Pencils: Jan 22 2012, 12:21 PM |

Edwin - thanks so much for the link! I totally lmao at Lucy and other girl Ethel. I'll have to watch the ep again to see if Fluttershy and Pinkie popped the cherries into their mouth (blame Dvandom! He started it! )
Agent X - hmm, I guess I should look over Cable and Deadpool again for the chimichanga ness. I started picking it up after Cable 'died' and Wade was teaming up with everyone. Oh, I can accept this take. Even with pride aside, AJ promised to bring back money and that fits in accord with Honesty. She HAD to bring money back cuz it's what she said she'd do and she didn't want it to become a lie. Thanks a lot for that insight (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) . Kinda makes me feel better. Though still doesn't help with sorts breaking the Pinkie Promise, lol! It was sorta like Pinkie with the Foreeeeever in Green Isn't Your Color, but without the real threat of violence or whatever it is Pinkie would do. Where's the welcome wagon for Pencils? -------------------- Oink!

I think we will get more speaking Derpy in future episodes, but I hope it's kept to a minimum. Too much of a good thing can end up being bad, in my opinion.
Derpy was probably the highlight of the episode for me, but after rewatching it today I've found Pinkie to be awesome throughout the episode. Her "RARITYCATCHME!" scene was brilliant. What would have made the scene even more amazing is if Rainbow Dash's reply to Twilight was "I can't deal with that now!". Hey, if they can reference Star Wars and Star Trek, why not reference the Transformers animated movie? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) And welcome to the herd Pencils (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-ironhide.gif) -------------------- |

Lmao at seeing that again! Pinkie thought Rarity would use her tk to catch her? Lmao! I luuuv that scream as she was falling (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) how does the physics of that work anyway? The two coaches were at the same velocity and side by side (?) but when Pinkie jumped from the side instead of back, shouldn't she have been left going backward instead of going to the side? Or were the other ponies behind AJ's coach?
On Derpy, I'd like to ask what other cartoons had actual input from fans that creators put in the cartoon to make them canon? All I can think of is Beast Wars when they were naming Sectors after screenhandles like Sector Hooks and Sector Tallories and gave a shout out to Wonko the Sane. And those aren't even anything super major to the plot. Uh, I cant tell if that Tiny Toon ep that was supposedly a fan script that kids submitted but was thought to be real then was animated by mistake is a jold or hoax or not. Same with that Dexter's Lab ep where some kids made the voices for an ep where Mandark rules the world or something. Derpy's the first time that I saw a sorta background character get special treatment cuz of the huge fan reaction that I can think of. Well, also that FIGWIT (?) character from Lord of the Kings when fangirls gushed over a strikingly handsome elf in the gathering of the 9 and they gave him a scene when he was calling for the Queen in the Return of the King (aka other guy in Flight of the Conchords). But thats a movie tho, not a toon (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon-hotrod.gif) -------------------- Oink!

Well, "Buster and Babs go Hawaiin" was a case where two teenage girls sent in their fan script, the guys at Warner Bros liked it, so they animated it with several tweaks (the two girls got guest spots on the show and several lines mocking the amateurity of the script were added). The Dexter's Lab episode was much the same, where a 6 year-old submitted his idea and voice recording, the people at Cartoon Network loved it, so they made the episode. The kid even appeared as a guest on Leno, as I recall. Likewise, some kid recently submitted their fan character to Adventure Time and the writers loved "Mee-Mow" much they put her in the show. It happens from time to time. Derpy, though, I think is a much more complicated situation. A lot of cross polination between staff and fandom and no outsider really "submitting" the character to the crew, but the crew running with the idea as a nod to the online fanbase. A very unique situation. This post has been edited by DrSpengler: Jan 22 2012, 02:20 PM -------------------- Hey, check out one of my sites!
